So this weeks topic is Gone but not Forgotten. Feel free to include a short description, if it adds meaning to the image.

Hopefully a topic that allows for some imaginative entries and gives equal opportunity regardless of equipment. Sample image is of the Greenhill Mine Workings in Coleman, AB. The mine was closed in 1967(?) and the workings were demolished two or three years after I took the photo in 2009.

Standard rules apply.
  • Follow all relevant local laws regarding stay-at-home orders. If you can't go outside, try and take a photo at home or grab one from the archives.
  • Do not comment, vote, react or click “like” on images prior to the winners being announced.
  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • This contest runs for one week. If in doubt, check the dates in the title.
  • At the end of the week, The Judge will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • If the Judge is unable to complete the selection within 48 hours of the deadline, then last week's 2nd place has to step in. 3rd place takes over should 2nd place be similarly unable to officiate.
  • The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create a new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest ends at 10:00PM Mountain Daylight Time, May 14 2014.

Double gone. Being on holiday abroad and seeing our young kids having fun together. (they still have fun, but are 12 years older and living their own life)

I remember going to Palisades Park when I was growing up in NJ. As I got older, we watched the submarine races!
No doubt while listening to Murray the K. . Go through the hole in the fence in Pal. Park ; or get in using matchbook covers?

10 years ago, a few weeks before we sold this house and moved to a different state. Not only is the house long gone (to us), but so are those tiny little faces. That small boy is now 5'11"!!!

Seems this topic proved to be far more challenging than I had intended. I expected graveyards, ghost towns, maybe an old caboose, cars rusting in a field, abandoned rail spurs, the possibilities seemed endless. So might as well get down to business. Thanks to those of you who took the time to enter.

@Allyance: We capture images of pets when opportunity presents, and I like this one. I suspect you have your monitor set a bit brighter than mine as I had to kick up my contrast and black level to bring out the shadow detail. The bowl is distracting as it pulls my eye away from the cats eyes and to the left edge of the image. If I was going to print this image I would clone out the dust bin and see if I could find something from another image to paste over the bowl.

@akash.nu: Quite a topic stretch. Actually you stretched it so thin it was in danger of disintegrating, but overall I love it. While sunsets beg to be enhanced it did leave some jpeg artifacts in the sky.

@oblomow: Again a stretch but I do like it. I found the foreground a little distracting and think it might have benefitted from a panoramic style treatment.

@deep diver: You’ve nailed the topic, the subject, and the heartbreak. The irony of the wreck being next door to Escapade was so fitting.

@someoldguy: Again right on topic. The muted background is also reflective of the topic. Interesting clip you included.

@Hughmac: My initial reaction was: Right on topic, but I am not sure about the rather dark treatment. Think I would have preferred a either more traditional balance, or perhaps a higher contrast B&W approach. The sky obviously dictated the centered subject but I would still have preferred it offset a bit to the left. I revisited it a few times and kept asking why so dark. Then it hit me, the statue is witnessing all of the things this man stood and fought for, being destroyed from within. Of course I may be reading something into the image that was never intended, but I am going with that interpretation.

@mollyc: Another stretch, but you did a great job of creating and capturing a poignant moment. Like many of your images every detail is thought out and polished to perfection right down to the flower pot. You make it seem like a casual snap when I am sure it was anything but.

This one has been very difficult to judge, and I am sure that even with just 6 entries there is room for disagreement.

1st place: @deep diver. Being right on topic gave you the final edge.

2nd place: Was a toss-up between @akash.nu, and @Hughmac. @akash.nu gets the edge simply because I was not 100% certain that my interpretation was as @Hughmac intended.

3rd place: I'm taking the cowards way out and declaring a third place tie between all the other entries. Each of them told a story and held my interest, and I appreciate every ones entry.

Again thanks to all who entered.

Thanks for your comments, and I see your point about giving the statue some more space to be looking towards, but I'm afraid the darkness wasn't intentional, and maybe if I'd thought more before taking the shot I would have used spot metering.
To be honest I was struggling for a subject but wanted to support the contest, and I had to discard the sunken boat shot I had because it had already been done.

Cheers, and congrats to the winners :)

Thanks for the support!

God forbid the judge ever be allowed to compare apples to apples. It would make the job way too easy! If I am ever here again maybe I'll pick apples as the topic.:)

FWIW Your camera has good underexposure latitude, and I had no difficulty pulling an almost normal image from your post, but really liked it when I upped the contrast and went B&W or even mild sepia. However it has to be judged as posted.

Thanks for your comments, I know the photo could have been better technically, but it was a spur of the moment shot, more interested in the subject than the composition. Just wanted to give Squeak one last shot of immortality.
