Congrats to the winners and great judging, very interesting contest this time. Actually I think I would have picked the same images as the winners.

@Alexander.Of.Oz - actually I am coming back to FF cameras and the size of the kit. My first FF was a Zeiss Ikon Contaflex which I used from around 1976-1991 with 3 fixed focus lenses. In 1991 I went Nikon with the Nikon F801 (N8008 in US I think). Maybe it just a bit back to the roots. Btw - in the last thread with the best shot of the year I was posting a picture taken with my iPhone SE.

Hello Alexander and thanks for your much appreciated feedback.

I’m just at the beginning as iphoneographer and I can’t wait to learn more, discover more and create more.

Doing amazing shots with just an iPhone: that’s my personal challenge!

Thanks for the (probably undeserved) podium Alex.
That and probably the most thorough feedback for everyone I’ve seen. Very generous.

Well done to everyone for learning and striving to improve their photography in 2018. We are all on a journey. Enjoy getting to the destination.
You deserved it buddy! It's my hope that one day you will have faith in your photographic abilities. That could stem from something I used to grapple with a while ago, that there will always be someone better than me & you know what? There will be, but it doesn't matter. As long as you are enjoying what you are doing, that's all that matters. It's not a contest, it's just life & you're among friends here. :D

Thanks very much for such a comprehensive and stimulating chat about where our photography is taking us.
It should warrant a discussion thread of it's own for 2019 ;)

Congrats to the winners :)

Cheers :)

Hugh

I am normally a man of very few words, I don't know what came over me yesterday! I agree, Hugh, it could be an interesting discourse.

No way, you gotta be kidding me!!!

That's fun, I know that's a nice capture, the guy looks really awesome and he actually is but not to that degree, he's a "normal" good looking guy in his twenties (nice ol' times...) but I caught him whilst listening to another guy who, in first intention, was my potential target because of a very expressive face and fun gestures but being sitting him straight across me he was aware of each and every attempt at taking a pic of him and he ended up posing which was not my intent; on the other side of the table both Mauro, the one in the pic you so nicely chose as deserving #1, and Alfonso whom I will maybe publish in another round (but he's on my Flickr gallery already and going being printed next week), they were both caught from the funny tales and their own thoughts at different times and distance was perfect with the focal length I had mounted on the camera (an equivalent 50mm) even tho I had to crop a bit but sharpness, framing etc almost perfect which teaches me that it's not about the gear, it's not about how much preparation into the shot, (too) many a times it's just having a tool and being at the right place by the right time, a quite usual tale in life uh?!

Thank you again so much for your appreciation and if you like the genre please visit my Flickr to see something more and something different

It was the story behind this image & how when presented with a poser that didn't do it for you, you persisted & got this stellar capture as a result that grabbed me.

I'll have a look at your Flickr account, I'm toying with creating a Flickr account again for some reason, maybe cause I just shut down all my Facebook & Instagram accounts...

I certainly get “taking it right the first time,” but I’m not there yet. ;) Also, my subject matter is often my children, where “in-focus” is a noble goal in itself! When I had a Sony mirrorless (a5000), I shot in jpg-only (from lack of knowing any different) and got really good results. I think Sony is a little less aggressive with PP, unlike my GX85. Good luck on your search for your next camera.

It takes a bit of thinking about what you're trying to convey in your image to know where to meter, but it does get easier with practice.

Aah, it's a familiarity thing, a bit like 'comfort food'! I can totally get that, I'm a creature of habit & strict rituals, change is the enemy, nah, I'm starting to enjoy change these days, as it shows a level of adaptability & being in the moment, if that makes sense?
.

Keep at it, you're doing well & they are perfectly capable little cameras! I look forward to you sharing more of your images with us here.

Great commentary , and great entries ! Congrats to Giuanniello and to the others . No way I can do people photography nearly as well as any of the posters here.

It's a hard thing for sure, catching the essence of an individual in a single frame! Especially when it's people you don't know, then it can be skewed by our perception of them, rather than truly reflecting their nature. That's where good portrait photographers stand head & shoulders above the crowd, because they manage that glimpse of authenticity of the subject that the majority of us would miss.

I'm going to repeat what I said to AFB to you Old's, have faith in yourself, accept that you are at wherever you are at with portraiture & that you have the ability to develop your ability in your own way & style, with perseverance.

What beautiful photos in this thread this week. Kudos to all participants. I am sorry I didn't have a chance for an entry - was busy last week and then out of town for a few days.
xoxo

We do have Manhattanhenge.
Actually , I'm trying to do a reverse Manhattanhenge , capturing the sunrise . IIRC this Wednesday will be the last day this occurs until next year . Looking for a spot to set up maybe on Blvd. East in Jersey where I can get a clear shot down one of the Manhattan Streets from atop the Palisades , using a long lens to reach across the Hudson . Tried earlier , before Christmas , and conditions weren't right . Let's see what happens this time . Hopefully I'll wake up early enough and won't get beat by traffic/parking.

I didn't learn much about photography along the past year but I learnt that to have a camera with me whenever possible might lead to great memories.

The following pic was shot during a lunch at a seaside restaurant, I was sitting among boat crew members and each of them was telling tales about their life on a boat and this guy, Mauro is his name, was apparently very much into what another guy was telling us and I was lucky to have my little Fuji X-Pro1 and the amazing 35mm f1.4 with me and already on the table since I so much wanted to take a candid of the tale teller but he was aware of it and each time I try to take a shot he used to interrupt his speech and pose which is not what I looked forward to whilst the other listeners were too much into the tale to pay attention to me and there you go, I took this and a couple more interesting ones.

Hang on! This guy is a fisherman in a cafe at lunchtime? When scanning through I TOTALLY thought this was a posed model!

I run an agency here in Capri where I take care of my client's needs and as such I spend most of the summer on a boat around the island or along the neighbour coasts, many a times we stop by for lunch along the shores and often the boat's crews hang up together around the same table, in this instance it was like 5-6 people and Mauro was across the table but not my target, as I wrote above it was another guy in front of me capturing my attention, the Fuji was already sitting on the table, it helps not being noticed, people get used to it after a while and it kinda disappears once you have time to build some confidence with the destined target Here my target was too close and aware whilst on the other end of the table both Mauro and Alfonso (which I might post later on or you can see it in my Flickr gallery) were paying sharp attention to the tales of funny and exuberant Mimmo was spreading along with his gestures, too close and too active to frame so I managed to take a couple shots of Mauro (the model like one) and a couple out of Alfonso, with a little bit of crop and post processing they came out quite unexpectedly well and I am so very glad you liked the photo, this pushes me towards the idea to arrange a dozen of those grabs and set up, sometime in the future, a showcasing, I already started to collect some of these shots and also printed to give them away to the respective subjects, your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Here the black and white captures

Here Mauro's InstaGram so you can see what the model look alike looks like in real life ;-)

Thanks again everybody for your appreciation and to boost my photographer's ego (which is only one out of quite a few)

Good on you for taking on the challenging aspects of lighting for portraiture, it looks like you're doing well with it. A photographic acquaintance accomplishes the most incredible portraits using ages old large format cameras with lenses that are almost as old, huge sheets of film & nothing more than window light! he has been awarded numerous times & even has a collection in the national gallery!

Thank you for the feedback.

As for large format, I know nothing, but next week I'm getting my hands on an old large format camera, and I can't wait, I wasn't sure what I was going to shoot, but you just gave me the answer.

Thank you!

Congratulations on a great image and winners place but you do realise the punishment for winning is you get to create the next competition! ;)
@Giuanniello The above comment is for you. As the winner, you get to choose the next theme for this contest! Just cut & paste the following bit after you write your description for the new thread. There's a big button at the top of the Photography sub-section to create a new thread.

********

The usual rules apply:

· The photographs must be your own work.

· Be creative and have fun.

· You may only submit one photo per contest.

· Please do not comment on photos until after the judging has taken place.

· The contest runs for a week and starts now!

· At the end of the week, The Judge (last week's Winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.

· If the Judge is unable to complete the selection within 48 hours of the deadline for close, then a vote will be carried out to select a winner. This will be based on the number of "likes" each image has. In the event of a draw, the second place winner from the previous week will choose the tiebreaker.

· The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).

· Please update the Weekly Contest Master List when you post a new contest

you sir have skills!!!! You have made him look like Zac Effron!!!!

Capri! OK, you’ll understand this one... my wife and I have this saying. When we are about to do something that we suspect is the wrong decision, if we go left instead of right or something like that, we call it out as “Capri!”...

The reason being she and I visited Capri early in our relationship (beautiful, stunning place BTW, you are very lucky being there!)

So we visited, came over on the ferry from Sorrento and landed at the harbour we were staying in Positano. We wanted to get to the top obviously but we just missed the transport up there. So she had the bright idea of looking at the route and saying it isn’t that far, lets just walk up!!! Well you know how daft an idea that was! Lol...

We were knackered at the top after the winding steep road all the way up. So from that point on, whenever one of us suggested something and the other one suspected it was the wrong call, we now ask if this is a Capri in the making...

I hope that makes sense... lol... We love the Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi Coast area.

When we do something that was a mistake we call it doing a Ken! :p

That’s a lovely story. Made me smile!

Ah, you climbed from the marina to downtown and didn't even, very much probably, walk the shortcuts; for us that's no big deal, we are used to walk and marina to town, along main road, is less than a mile and a half but in the summer sun I know it being very hot, your mistake like I always tell my clients coming just for the day, this is a place which shows off after 5pm when all the day trippers (like you were) will be gone so, next time, let me know ahead of time and make sure you spend a couple nights.

Thanks for appreciating our landscape, it truly is beautiful

Yep day trippers were us. Capri is one of the most beautiful places I have been. Almost as beautiful as the Isle of Skye!

Next time we will be staying for sure! and yes, no shortcuts were taken we went the looooong way...
