I think I picked a hard topic to judge, there are some pretty good photos all over the place!

@oblomow Cities at night always look cool. I like the contrast between the dark river and the bright buildings there!

@akash.nu That's a cool perspective of Hong Kong! Usually the Ferris wheel looks so big from the ground, but here it's tiny compared to all the buildings.

@someoldguy A different kind of city lights here, with the Christmas decorations. I really like the black and white here, it seems to add to the photo.

@soulreaver99 Definitely has the LA vibe! You get a cool angle at the old vs. new of the city from there, with some of the lights being the new LEDs and some being the much warmer older style. I think that really draws me in right to the crosswalk.

@mollyc Nice colors and composition! I'm guessing these are tail lights of cars in front of you? Certainly leaves plenty for the imagination.

@Hughmac Doesn't seem like the frog minded you getting that close! I love the tilty flashes on those point and shoots, they're a lot more versatile than they appear at first glance.

@anotherscotsman Nice timing! The city has nice colors, which aren't quite overwhelmed by the moon. But yet the moon is the only thing bright enough to get the star points.

@Clix Pix Intriguing! They sort of look like snowflakes with the points.

@dmb8021 Always a fan of stars and Joshua Tree! I'm impressed by how crisp the foreground is, looks like there must have been no wind that night!

@mpfuchs Looks like a nice night! I really like the colors of this one, is it taken near dusk or dawn? You've got the nice light blue near the horizon and the well lit mountains. That looks like it would make a pretty nice print!

@Janichsan There are a lot of stars there considering how bright the city is. You managed to capture both in the scene pretty well!

@Susurs Lots going on here! You've got the ocean, the beach, what looks like it could be a storm in the background, and even a faint Milky Way. That looks like it would've been a nice place to sit back, relax, and take in the sights. You don't usually get both the storm and the stars that well!

@deep diver Certainly captures the nighttime feel in the city! I'd be curious how it would look with the shadows lifted a bit, you can barely make out that there are people on the sidewalk there.

@tizeye Very colorful scene!

@cogi0490 Nice shot! The longer exposure almost makes it look like daytime, but the lights and silky smooth water give it away.

@Indydenny That's a nice composition/angle on the city. The green-ish lights contrast nicely with the warm street lights. As does the dark ocean with the bright city.

@NeGRit0 Just snuck in before the contest was closed. Good thing too, I like that shot! Could either be saying goodbye at the end of a vacation, or hello as you're landing. Either way invokes the feeling of getting away!

Well, that was a tough one! Lots of entries to choose between. But the winner goes to... @mpfuchs! Something about that shot makes me think it would look really nice hung on a wall. Runners up were @someoldguy and @NeGRit0.

Thank you for the kind words, and congrats to the winners :)

Our frogs come out from under the decking and sit stock still on the grass, so are an easy subject to shoot close up.
They're probably hibernating at the moment as I haven't seen one for a few months.

Cheers :)

Hugh

Thanks @mackmgg !
I took this shot at 2am in the morning during a full moon night.
Hadn't checked this, because I didn't think I had any shot with all that competition...
I'll be posting a new competition tomorrow morning (US time).

The new thread is up:

Also wanted to give some more details about my night photo.
I got into Salt Lake City late, but still wanted to see and take pictures at the dry lake at night.
Decided to drive 200 miles round trip to do just that. Got there at 2am and stayed a couple of hours. The sight was just amazing. With the full moon, the salt reflected all that light and you could see very well. With a 30+ second long exposure, the pics just cam out looking like daylight, but with stars.
It's hard to stand still for that long, but this is me:

The next morning I went back, as the Bonneville Speedweek was supposed to get under way.
Turns out there was a little rain before I got there, so the salt was too soft, but it was still amazing seeing those cars out there...

Afterwards I went to south-eastern Utah and spend some days in Moab, Arches and Canyonlands.
So far my most exciting photography trip! Thanks for the interest. And again thanks to @mackmgg for picking my shot!

Thanks for the nod. :)

Congrats to the winners in a hard contest to judge. @NeGRit0 caught my eye - I spend a lot of time in planes and this is certainly evocative.

Glad you enjoyed. It was a fun image to create.
