@dwfaust, the almost too late, just as the doors were being locked, slipped in with a beautiful example of aged tools. There is a great joy to be had from using a well made tool that you have used from new. A beautiful image contrasting the new power driver and measuring tools alongside the classic old equipment. Fantastic lighting, lovely colour use to presumably stop the yellow of the measuring tape and drill from overpowering the image. A great selection of tools to include but feel that maybe making the plane a little more prominent would make it more powerful? Overall though a lovely image.

So, that's the comments, now for the standings. First, a shout out to Apple Fanboy for that lovely lighting capture. A great image. Now you know I try to be controversial in my judging, trying to move away from the obvious - that and I am just wired weirdly so tend to not think like others.

Here goes.

3rd place: MacRy

2nd place: Highdefjunkie

1st place: Deep Diver

Thank you so much for contributing to the competition, some great entries this week, it has been a pleasure judging it and I am super excited to see if I can add some value to the next comp! Over to the winner….

First of all, congrats to @MacRy, @highdefjunkie and @Deepdiver! Great job by everyone again this week.

@kenoh, I appreciate the comments. I thought of my Dad's old tools as soon as I saw this week's subject, but really struggled with putting the image together. You are correct, I attempted to use the sepia tone to offset the bright colors of the new tools - both the measuring tape and impact driver are bright yellow, and the level was bright red and black. At the same time, I didn't want to do too much post-processing.

I also like your thought on making the plane more prominent - it's a heavy, beautiful piece that bears the markings of years of use.

Thank you, sir!

Drinking Jack Daniels alone? That's only one step off Tenents Super on a Glasgow park bench!
As part of my diet (and another reason) I've not had a drop of alcohol since Christmas Day.
Really missing a beer on Friday after work though.

Give it time you will be fine. I havent really had a drink since my eldest was born - 7 years ago. I think I can count the times I have had a drink on both hands. Thing is, I wish my being good was having a positive effect on my belt line!

Yeah I was just in the mood that night and a bottle of Jack was all I had to hand... lol... lesson learned...

A nice well used plane is a very photogenic thing. Would really like to see more images of it - strange as that may seem.

@kenoh Glad you liked the humour :) Great comments and judging as usual, you're an expert at this!!

And congratulations to the winners and participants this week!!!

LOL... you would think I would get the hang of it by now! been on a roll of late.... sure you lot are colluding in the background and agreeing to let me win!!!

In all seriousness I hope my judging is OK, I enjoy looking at the images and learning from each one. All of my comments are from me thinking what would I do... and why do I like it. I like to find at least one thing right and one thing wrong. I find the first bit of that easy... the latter is getting harder and harder each time I have to do it! but it is great for improving my eye too so I thank everyone for allowing me the honour.

Anyway, we are in Deep Divers hands now... onwards to the next

Great contest, and wonderful theme, or topic, and some wonderful shots. well done on both the theme chosen and the exemplary judging, @kenoh.

I would have liked to have seen more pictures of old people, if only as an antidote to the youth worshipping elements of our culture.

Meanwhile, I thought that @Apple fanboy's shot of York Cathedral was terrific; great lighting, composition, atmosphere. Anyway, it also appealed to me because I love old buildings, especially cathedrals and castles.

And you can add bridges to that: I also loved @MacRy's shot of the Millennium Bridge, with the dome of St Paul's offering a striking background.

Having seen it myself, and been surprised at the size (small) and the popularity (insane) I liked @Indydenny's treatment of the tourists besieging the Mona Lisa. I could never understand how may other masterpieces (even in the same room) were completely ignored while this - yes - iconic picture was besieged.

Others I liked included the picture posted by @anotherscotsman which was very reminiscent of Cuba, and I thought @deep diver's shot very impressive.

Here you go Sceptical - better late than never but here was my other choice for this week's contest. Grandparents and their new grandson.

OK, here we go. SO the topic this week was looking to the juxtaposition of old and new. Looking for examples of beautifully aged subjects in a scene and I think we got a result!

@deep diver A lovely capture of classic architecture flanked by a modern future landmark. I really like the juxtaposition but felt frustrated about the old engineering metal structure in front of it. Then I realised. It is the contrast of tone between the old engineering frame and the modern architecture behind that is the subject! fantastic example of Old verses new. I love seeing these old metal structures with the shed on top and thinking, who worked up there? did they have a whole workshop there, working in the sky like it was on the ground. I think that would be awesome! nice tonality and lighting.

Thank you Ken for the thoughtful comments on all of the entries, and congrats to everyone. I had this image and threw it in there just to have an entry. I did not expect to win. The goal of this image was to show Cleveland at three critical times in it's history: Industrial Revolution, Post Depression, and modern.

The new contest is posted at: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/weekly-photo-contest-aug-4-11-chaos.1986437/
