Sorry Susurs, with these contests the start date is written for wherever the host is in the world, but if you check the start date and time of the first message (which is translated to your time zone if you have set that for this site) you have a week from then.

You got the eye focus nicely here, there's some good detail when viewed large, but I'd open up the blacks and shadows quite considerably for this image to give even more definition and detail there or back off of the contrast if you pushed that pretty hard. In a good image there is detail all through the blacks, which is harder to achieve than it seems. Most modern image editing programs can open up the shadows quite impressively, but there's always a trade-off whereby if you go too far you will introduce a lot of noise to the image.

Congrats to @mollyc for her win and to @MacRy and @AlexH for their places . My subject for this month ( wingless fruit fly ) was not too cooperative even though he was slightly dead . My original thought was to get a head shot under my microscope , but he was just too big even under my 'scope's lowest magnification (20X) , so I went to plan B , and tried to get a good one using my MP-E . 5X worked , but I couldn't get enough light to assure a decent focus and reasonable exposure time , so I dropped back to 3X and ended up with my entry .

7D , 65mm MP-E macro @3X , rails , tripod , ISO 800 , lighting via an IKEA LED lamp , shot tethered via Canon Utility

Well, macro is a little out of my area, but here goes anyway. This is called "salmiakki" in Finnish, or salty liquorice. It's basically liquorice flavoured with ammonium chloride, and it's used in Finnish candy quite often. People outside the Nordic countries don't usually like it. It's very salty, but once you grow to like it, there's no going back. In the photo is Apothecary's Salmiac, and it's diameter is around 7 millimeters. It's black, so the only B&W conversion here is removing the blue sky around it. It's lying on a mirror (hence the sky), and you can see the bottom, too. This is a stacked photo with 5 exposures, taken with a vintage 60's Nikkor 24mm with an extension tube.

I have had this beverage - served in a small shot glass, black, and evil, and seductively, addictively delicious; a Finnish friend offered it to me in a bar that could best be described as a dive somewhere in central Asia, and, you are right, once you acquire the taste for it, there is no going back.

Some great shots, and congrats @mollyc, terrific entry.
