This is from my trip to Northumberland a couple of years ago. We booked a cottage on Airbnb but I didn’t realise how beautiful the place really was until we got there and the host made it that much special with this home made cake and a bottle of wine. She really made me feel at home. Such lovely people. For some reason this picture always reminds me of a place I’d like to call home.

Okay everyone. Sorry for the late reply. Been really busy this past week. Thank you to everyone who entered and I’ve tried to give critique for everyone. Please don’t be offended by my unqualified ramblings!

@deep diver
I think the B&W works well for this one. I think either a slightly wider or tighter shot might have been better. The pulpit and chair look like they need a bit more breathing room (although I couldn’t see what is just outside of the frame which may have guided your choice.

@Strider64
If I was a sceptical man I’d say you were sucking up to my avatar! But I think it says far from home to me!

@Darmok N Jalad
I hope you used a nice long lens! Anyway nice bit of lateral thinking. I will say that the image looks quite green to me. Maybe have a look at a custom WB or shoot in raw and adjust in post.

@oblomow
Hardcore! I like this image a lot. A home away from. I have to admit I prefer 4 stars and a hot shower!

@tizeye
Yup been to Florida, I did Disney, Epcot and some water park! As for the image the bow of the boat bothers me a little. I’d want to see more or none at all to improve the image for me.

@CmdrLaForge
Is this the view from your home? That would suit me fine! I’m sure its optical but it does feel like its falling away a bit on the right.

@anotherscotsman
How many of you were there for lunch? Anyway this makes me hungry! Nice use of depth of field to give it some home context!

@akash.nu
Couldn’t agree more. That homemade cake does look appealing! As does the area. Somewhere I’d love to go live!

@mollyc
I’m guessing you have a fly filter? Looks like you put a filter on just part of the image. How do you get your windows so clean? Can you come and do mine?

@soulreaver99
How lovely. But you lose a point for making me hungry again!

@malofx
Looking cool. Looks like a lovely spot. Certainly worth leaving home for. Great image.

@cogi0490
Couldn’t agree with the sentiment more. Home is where the heart is. Just watch your horizon. It's just slightly off. Also I’d have been tempted to shoot from a slightly higher position so she isn’t quite so hidden .

@Somepix
I can see why. A beautiful spot.

Well done everyone for your creative interpretation as always.

3rd Place @malofx Beautiful image. Nicely done.
2nd Place @akash.nu Just says home to me.
1st Place @oblomow Picked this over the other runners up because whilst they were sunning themselves and eating cake you were up on the mountain pitching your tent!

Over to you @oblomow

Congrats to the winners, and well done on the topic an judging, @Apple fanboy.

Some lovely shots.

Loved @akash.nu's shot - that was warm and inviting and nicely composed. Terrific food (er, cake) shot.

I was also very taken by @CmdrLaForge's shot of rural arcadia, pastoral meadows and tilled fields; my mother's godmother had such a farm, and I stayed there on holidays as a child with my brothers. The colours of the countryside in northern Europe - even when very attractive to the naked eye - can be difficult to render accurately (or forcefully) in film (or digitally), as they may seem bland and too subtle - to successfully convey an exquisite summer pastoral scene, one that is tranquil, and timeless.

Thanks for the feedback. I had a small cut everyday for the whole long weekend after dinner.

What's a fly filter? Do you mean what we call window screens? No filters on this image, it's just the window is a crank out, so you can't see the screen on the non-open portion. My windows are horribly dirty, but they are newer UV filtering windows so they reflect well at the right angle. Birds often fly into the ones without screens. :(

Fun competition. Congrats to the winners!

Cough.

Ah, well, ahem: I thought that this was a 'fly filter', too.

Yes, they might also be described as window screens, the very fine (extra) doors you sometimes find on cheesemonger's or perhaps, a butcher store during spells of very hot weather - doors that admit air, but equipped with tiny grilles that serve to exclude flies, or prevent them from entering the premises.

Thanks for a great topic and excellent judging.
The pulpit had microphones mounted on it and there was a lot of "stuff" behind the pulpit. My choices were 1) to spend a lot of time moving stuff out of the way and still not getting it all, 2) include all of that visual noise, 3) get in close. I had tried cropping off some of the sides when I first processed this but I didn't like the way it looked.

Never quite managed to get my act together for this week’s competition! Some really nice entries here and congratulations to those on the podium! Oblomow, even just viewing your image added a welcome bit of suggestion of cold to what has been a hot and humid summer here!

Screens: Yes, in the US we have screens on windows and screens on doors. Keeps flies and other unwelcome flying critters out of the house or other buildings and yet enables the opening of windows and doors. Before it got so hot and humid here that I had to turn on the A/C I had my windows open and also the screen door, letting in lovely fresh air...... We just call them “screens,” or if in a door, we call the whole thing a “screen door.” Never heard screens referred to as “fly filters” before, but that makes sense, too. Yet another difference in English language usage between us and you guys across the Big Pond.....

Thank you very much! I grew up there. It is very close to my parents house. Actually I took this picture during a walk with my mum recently. Even so I haven’t lived there since 1995 the place I grew up I still call home.
