Weekly Photo Contest March 28 - April 4 - CONVERGENCE

needfx inspired the new topic. Refraction causes light (and other rays) to diverge. Let’s go in the opposite direction for this week. The theme is CONVERGENCE. Interpret as you want, but points will be given for the creativity of the interpretation.


We all know the rules, but just in case you've been sleeping or looking for plausible deniability.............

· The photographs must be your own work, no 3rd party creative commons images either.
· Be creative and have fun, as if you had a choice.
· You may only submit one photo per contest, nuff said.
· Please do not comment on photos until after the judging has taken place, but spam all you want.
· The contest runs for a week and starts now, well, 2 seconds ago.
· At the end of the week, The Judge (last week's Winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible. I will.
· If the Judge is unable to complete the selection within 48 hours of the deadline for close, then a vote will be carried out to select a winner. This will be based on the number of "likes" each image has. In the event of a draw, the second place winner from the previous week will choose the tiebreaker.
· The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).

Dam! At least three of us was hoping this weeks theme was going to be your best shot of Sagrada Família! :D

Here it is. What you have all been waiting for..........

First the usual disclaimer. I’m nothing special and I don’t know anything more than anyone else, and I know a lot less than a lot of other people. My comments are mine alone and do not represent Macrumors.com in any way. None of my comments are meant to be critical. I hope they will be taken in the spirit of this forum. While not every image resonated with me, they are all excellent. Judging was hard because, as usual, and I would love to put at least half of these on the podium.


redshifted – This is a great image. I love the tension between the convergences and divergences. My eye started with the slats of the sculpture and they carried me toward the painting, but my eye was stopped by the molding at the bottom of the wall and then the molding at the bottom of the picture. The picture mimics the slats and the texture of wood. There is enough similarity between the colors of the patron’s clothes and the picture to bring them together, even though they clearly do not match. The lines of the patron’s body take me back to the bench with which there is no connection, and I start all over again. The fact that the patron looks so blasé in such a dynamic visual process adds a little extra to the story. Very well done. What museum is it?

tizeye – I wish my post office had a drive-up window. The “early delivery” sign adds an extra little humor to the image. You have certainly captured the situation and I like the way the bright yellow stands out from all of the flat tones. I would have liked to see a little more into the shadows to see the point of convergence better.

imac wannabe – this is a common approach to capturing convergence, but I like the extra elements. The street and buildings converge because of linear perspective. The yellow lines actually converge. Both of those convergences take us directly to the Transamerica Pyramid which also converges. I like that you triple-dipped the theme. Nicely done.

Darmok N Jalad – I am struggling with trying to get my eye to move through this image. I see the theme. The clouds are very interesting. (I don’t think I’ve ever seen a cloud formation like that.) I think I understand what you are trying to accomplish. Unfortunately, the colors are too flat and the tree is too distracting for me.

anotherscotsman – Here is another classic example of linear perspective. This image is so crisp and clean that my eye just shoots down the track and keeps going well beyond the horizon. The color casts from the different kinds of lights enhances this image even more. Nicely done.

Laird Knox – This is a very interesting take on the theme. It is imaginative, playful, and fun. There is a tension between the chaotic look of the buildings at the bottom third and orderly look of the towers above them. The “FUN CITY” signs add an additional playful element.

someoldguy – And yet another example………. My left brain likes symmetrical things to be symmetrical, and this one is off just a little. The more I looked at this, however, the more I like that the right rail is almost straight and laterally static, and the left rail converges into it. There is too much sky for me, especially since so much of it is blown. Cropping out about the top 2/3 of the sky gives the image much greater depth.

Donka – I happened to see this image on my phone first, and I had no idea what I was looking at. It all came together as soon as I saw it on my computer. I love this image. The tones and textures are great. My eye is immediately drawn down the bench, but the DOF is so narrow that I have no idea where the lines are taking me. I love that tension. Very well done.

oblomow – We have all seen more than our fair share of spiral staircase pictures. Most of them look down the middle of the stairwell. I like that you stepped back a little. The repeated convergence and divergence of the rail as the stairs descend create that element that makes this stand out from the crowded field of staircase images.

Janichsan – Tunnel pictures are a natural for the theme. The lines of the tunnel and lights, and their contrasting colors move me along. The contrasting dark room at the end creates its own draw. I cannot fault you for the door on the right (unless, of course, you are the architect), but it breaks the motion in an unpleasant way.

stillcrazyman – It took me a little time to figure out what you had done here. It is a brilliant idea and perfectly executed. The bokeh is just enough that the second spiral does not look like it is a part of the first, but can still be seen as an extension of the first. I would like to see this as a square that crops out all of the scroll on the left while leaving the right half of that post, and puts the center of the spiral right in the middle. When I covered part of my screen to do that, it became much more dynamic and I felt like I was falling into the image.

needfx – There are certainly a lot of points of convergence in this image. It also reminds me of some New Age attempt to converge with a higher power through a pyramid. I do not like the way you cropped this image. My eye wants to keep traveling up the structure but gets jarringly stopped by the top edge of the frame.

inkmitch – Great image. There are so many unrelated lines that all converge into that black hole that is the tunnel at the end of the station. I generally think of subways as being a little “gritty.” I would like to see this image with some grain. Along those same lines (pun or not???? You decide.), I doubt this is a NYC subway. It is way too clean.

Apple fanboy – This image triggers a lot of conflict within me, and that makes it so much more engaging and interesting. I love the lines and I want to climb the steps to see what is next. Those steps also look pretty sketchy and I am not sure I want to take the risk (the chain not withstanding). The amount of contrast you put into this takes away a lot of the texture and detail that I want to see, but it also adds a lot of mystery and age that I really like. I get very excited when an image challenges me. You nailed that. Well done.

mollyc – I remember seeing this image in another contest. I liked it then as I do now. It is another solid example of linear perspective. For me, there is nothing more important than our kids. I love that the lines here lead us to your son.

3rd goes to Apple fan boy and stillcrazyman

2nd (and the real winner) goes to Donka – I just keep coming back to this one.

1st (and the real loser) goes to redshifted – The creativity and complexity of this scene make it the standout.


redshifted – Congrats or condolences. Either way, I pass the baton to you.

FOR THE RECORD - That is not my car and I was not the driver! I was on my way home from a photo shoot, had all my camera gear with me, swinging by the post office on the way to check my P O Box. Had just happened before I arrived as, 1) no crowd formed around it, and 2) the fire station is 3 blocks away and the truck was just arriving as I left before the firetruck and police blocked me in the parking lot. With the front door damaged, they wouldn't allow people to enter the post office to see the front end while doing other business, with existing customers inside escorted through the mailroom to the rear for exit.
