Welcome snappers to this week's photo contest.

Your mission this week: Ready-Made

Ready-Made was the name given by Marcel Duchamp to a type of artwork he invented consisting of an ordinary, everyday object removed from its usual functional context and displayed instead as a work of art. Duchamp exhibited his first ready-made in 1913 (wiki).

In brief: out of place, out of order.

Have fun!

I have a feeling this might be 180º opposite to what you meant, but I'll blame my poor reading comprehension and go ahead anyway.

It's definitely interesting but I'll be away all next week.

hi,

is there any interest in this subject?

if not, maybe yjchua95 or pmexperience can set up a new contest/subject

I'd keep going with it needfx. I find that subjects that challenge people are great but sometimes slow to get going. Slow because they don't have the shot in storage and have to go get it...and that's very good.

Bonus content. A short promo film I made for a Duchamp exhibition in London!

Yes, go ahead and keep this one going. I plan on entering, but to be honest, nothing I have right now really fits it, so I plan on going out tomorrow morning with this specific challenge in mind. We'll see what I come up with.

Personally i think challenges which are too specific never tend to churn out too well..

well, it's the last time, if given the chance again, that I will post such a specific subject.

only broad general stuff (*GENERAL STUFF saluting - HIMYM) it is

apologies for ruining the contest

Don't take offence, needfx. It's a very conservative group here,as AceArchie and many others (yes, BadGuy, I'm lookin' your way!) could testify to!

It's rare to have someone actually put thought and energy into these challenges, they have been vanilla for as long as I've around here. I love the twist, the curveball, the challenge to think creatively and am still trying to dig out some lint from my navel, umm, I mean come up with an idea...

I haven't taken offence, au contraire, I feel like I've ruined it for everybody

Not at all. Thinking outside the box is good for us all. I like having to think creatively for these challenges. It's good to be pushed and challenged in our creativity.
The issue a lot of people have is that they don't have stock photos that fit the theme, and 7 days is not a lot of time for people to think of an idea, find a location and shoot it. Maybe we could run a separate monthly competition were people had more time to develop an idea? We could call it the Creative monthly photo competition?
What do you guys think?

I' am all in for that, but I would suggest a two week interval. A month is quite a long time

Don't say that needfx! It's refreshing to have a real mix of topics in the competition subjects and I like your original style of thinking. Don't stop!!! Having different styles over time offers something for everyone.

I was just a little confused as to whether we were supposed to make our own artwork or not.
Anyway, I'll use Antony Gormley's installation 'Another Place' to flesh out the contest a bit...

I disagree. This is a hard topic, but that's what pushes us to grow.

===============================

I did some more reading about “ready made.” It seems to be a fairly fluid concept. I am not sure if this image falls inside or outside the scope, but here it is. Chicago's Millenium Park has a polished sculpture called "Cloud Gate" It looks like a big chrome kidney bean. Here, I used it as a mirror to reflect Chicago’s Loop.

I like contests that make you think and try something different. I'm not sure I hit the mark with this so I might change if I can think of anything else quickly. My thought is that I should try to photograph an every day object as if it were already a piece of art and not try to make it into art with the photograph. I think there is a subtle difference there in regards to the intent of the theme.

I'm not too clear exactly if this is considered part of the theme even after I googled the term. I've the impression that it's something man-made but not supposed to be there. Hence this photo. Apologies if I got it wrong :)
