Go wide! Panoramas, sure, but crops from a normal landscape-oriented picture are also envisioned. Similar to another contest we've had, but with a specific constraint:

Crop your image to 13:4.

It's an unusual, pleasing ratio that allows, typically, for more foreground and background separation than a wider crop, while still emphasizing w i d e . Try it!

You can do a landscape or seascape or cityscape (or put 'em all together!) e.g.,

2019-09-02 5D4_4678 ~ heading to Ruffle Bar 46.jpg

Or maybe a candid / landscape juxtaposition, e.g.,

2018-01-04 5D4_8507 ~ 07 – LA – stop at Bluff Park 66 (1).jpg

Or a streetscape, e.g.,

2017-02-24 DSC08730 ~ on Myrtle 1 (1).jpg

Or one of those lonely urban vignettes, e.g.,

2014-01-29 DSC05189 ~ garage 2 (1).jpg

Or even a group portrait! e.g.,

2017-02-16 5D4_4021 ~ day 06 | Cuba | at Centro ProDanza 80 (1).jpg

Have fun with it!

As always, standard rules apply:

  • The photographs must be your own work
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now.
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.

wow this is an interesting one. 🙂

out of curiosity, why that specific ratio? like i know 16:9 is cinema, but is 13:4 representative of something? or is it just one you like?

It's not a "regular" ratio, so far as I know — so why pick it? A lot of my work is with proportions, meaning I spend a fair amount of time thinking about them. I was surprised when I came across this ratio, and have in the years since found it visually pleasing.

In addition, and to my mind, it can discipline a panorama — either by forcing you to chose the most important part of what's scans "wide" in something that's (merely) physically wide, or by juxtaposing a more obvious foreground, middle ground and background, tying them together visually, by merely cropping out extra sky beyond, or confusing foreground in front.

This is an awesome challenge. Nice topic - no idea how I could make a compelling image but yeah nice unique theme and a very curious ratio.

I'm aware that there's a lot of people who don't or don't want to crop. The "picture I pre-visualized is the picture I present" crowd. It's a way of working that I respect.

OTOH I don't mind cropping; I think of it as analogous to editing text. And while I don't always crop — sometimes things fall into place — when I do it's because I'm looking for the better version of what I started out to make. I'm finding the picture.

As 13:4 isn't a film or camera-sensor dimension, this contest foregrounds the idea of finding or strengthening an idea, or even bringing something that was submerged up.

Keep them coming! A good way to revisit old favorites and just maybe give 'em a new twist.

I've been doing just that and am still browsing through 14 potential candidates wondering which to submit for your expert scrutiny.

I might post a few more that never made it, come the Ides of March or St Paddy's, depending upon when you declare open season. Any others here fancy doing that?

May I suggest you pick your best, and after the contest's over post the others for discussion. Where to crop can be a fascinating question.
