I’d just begun to type out “interesting choice to process this as b&w”, when I zoomed in to take another look, and it looks like this was shot on b&w film (or at least a fairly convincing film-looking filter applied to a digital image). In any case, b&w highlights the contrast between light and shadow that we don’t normally see in our usual color vision. (Although shooting concerts on film is always difficult; even if using Ilford Delta Pro 3200, I still need to use lenses with a f/2 or faster aperture and always shoot wide open, so focus always end up soft.)

So, tough decisions, but at the end of the day:

Over to coolguy4747 next week!
I am SO sorry I missed all this! I had an extremely crazy long weekend and completely lost track of anything that was not right in front of my face. I aslo really didn't think I would get picked!

It was indeed shot on Ilford Delta Pro 3200, with a 50mm f/1.8, and it was still tricky to get focus, exposure & decent shutter speeds right. This photo is of the bassist for my favorite singer, Jenny Lewis, on her most recent tour.

Anyways, thank you so much for the kind words and the pick, and apologies again to all for throwing off the flow of these contests. I promise I'll do better next time, if granted the privilege.

No worries, I hope everything turned out all right in the end. I also feel quite good about myself for being able to recognize yours was shot on film!

Shooting film in such low-light situations is indeed difficult, even with high speed film. What I've learned to do is to just set the camera at maximum aperture and the absolute minimum safe shutter speed I can get away with (so 1/60 sec with a 50mm lens if I've had coffee that day, which I usually do), and stand develop afterwards. I've been able to get fairly decent results with even HP5 in very dimly lit bars this way. Of course, this only works if you develop your own film!

Thanks, yeah it was actually a very good weekend, just a whole lot going on. I think I was limiting myself to 1/60 and 1/125. I found out after the fact that the camera had developed a fault in the shutter or mirror mechanism at faster shutter speeds (the bottom of the frame I posted is dark, and got it worse with faster speeds, so I am relieved to have any usable shots). Most of my shots of the main performer were with missed focus or motion blur from her movement. I have not yet ventured into developing my own film, but maybe someday.
