As spring is springing here in the northern hemisphere, the bugs are starting to emerge. In the past we've had a contest on "Insects" but no such limitation here, bring out your arachnid friends too if you so desire.

Please remember that these standard rules apply:
  • Do not comment, vote, react or click “like” on images prior to the winners being announced. In keeping with our most recent tradition, violators may be awarded first place. Henceforth this shall be known as the Molly-ing rule in honour of our friend and fellow perpetrator.
  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • This contest runs for one week. If in doubt, please check the title or description.
  • At the end of the week, The Judge will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • If the Judge is unable to complete the selection within 48 hours of the deadline, then last week's 2nd place has to step in. 3rd place takes over should 2nd place be similarly unable to officiate.
  • The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create a new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest ends on May 15 at 10 PM Mountain Daylight Time.
So go get down to the ground and start taking pictures!

Took this picture today. I was hiking and stopped at a tree stump and turned over this piece of rotten wood that was laying on the top. Was not expecting any bugs! Turns out they are “wharf roaches”. Took using the macro lens on my iPhone 13 Pro.

@koolmagicguy It's cool seeing phones advance into the macro world! Looks a lot like the "roly poly" bugs where I grew up or the "pill" bugs where I am now! Both the same bug, but different regional names!

@Strider64 Mantises are such cool bugs! Alas we get too much winter here for them to be happy.

@imac wannabe I really like the colors on this one! The yellow wasp on the purple flower really stands out, especially with the green background!

@gaswerks This one looks like it's got arctic camo on!

@akash.nu Quite a plump spider there!

@someoldguy Something about this makes it look like the butterfly was photoshopped in! From the shadows I'm assume it wasn't actually, so I don't know what makes it look like that! Lots of nice "eyes" on the back though, I wonder how well a modern camera with "Eye AF" would handle that!

@iMyke That's a cool wasp! And quite the stinger... A nice clean background and foreground on this one too!

@mollyc I like this one! Impressive that you got the butterfly to stay there for the pic too. I'm not normally a square photo person, but something about this seems like it would do well in that format!

@Janichsan Another camouflaged bug, complete with what looks to be a few nibbles taken out of it!

@Snowlover A nice lady bug there! I like the framing with the bug sitting in the patch of sunlight on a mostly shaded leaf.

@tizeye Nice shot of the dragonfly on what I assume is a grass. I assume that's motion blur on the wings, which is pretty neat. I usually either seem them stopped or fully in the air with a really fast shutter (and thus frozen wings)

@TheYayAreaLiving ? A bee! Enough with the wasps, finally a nice pollinator! Seems to be enjoying the flowers there.

@chown33 Something about that bug looks a bit off, but I'm not sure what. Oh I know, it seems to be injured and lost its wings!

A few days late to, uh, build suspense or something like that. Totally not because I typed half of this and then got distracted. That would never happen... And so with much delay:

1st place - @mollyc

2nd place - @iMyke

3rd place - @imac wannabe

Nope , the butterfly wasn't Photoshopped in ....... the shot was taken with a Canon 100mm macro lens and a Canon ring light . I think maybe the light falloff in the background , or maybe the software used to process the image (DxO Photolab's 'Clearview' ) is creating the 'Photoshopped in' effect.
