okay guys, in the interest of time, i'm just going to leave a podium today, but i will come back later this week with actual feedback. i actually love to give feedback and probably should have gone with the suggestion of making notes along the way (half the time i do it that way, half the time i wait till day of...chose the wrong method this go round).

i was blown away by all the entries and want to thank each of you for participating. i especially loved all the film entries! ❤️

third place: @skidu. great use of shadows/light

second place: @cogi0490. love the long exposure on this

first place: @Jumpthesnark. you all knew i'd choose a film image, right?? the grain and the gaze and the spot on focus make this for me. plus, you developed yourself! whoop!

i promise i'll be back later this week with more comments for everyone else.

(ps, i think my son is fine, but we are going to the doctor later today; he got two hard hits during lacrosse this weekend and his school nurse freaked out and sent him home. he has had actual concussions in the past and right now he's just bored and would have rather spent the day in school but they won't let him back till he has an actual evaluation.)

Congratulations, all! The minute I laid eyes on that compelling image by Jumpthesnark I thought, "ah, there's the winner!" It's a stunner all the way around and definitely encompasses all the best that B&W offers and why so many people love shooting it in film.

Molly, take your time about the rest of this....we can wait for the comments. Your child is most important right now and of course you need to be doing what is needed there over the next little while. Hoping that it is not a concussion after all and that recovery is quick!

Steven Van Zandt, aka Little Steven or Miami Steve from the E Street Band, aka Silvio Dante on The Sopranos. At the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta on Jan. 20, 1986, for the first celebration of Martin Luther King Day as a national holiday.

Shot on Tri-X with a Nikon F3 and a Nikkor 300mm f/2.8, hand developed in the bathroom of a forgotten Atlanta motel room using hot Dektol to save a few minutes on deadline.
When I was at RIT we had three majors in photography: Photo Science (mine), Professional Photography and Illustration. This a great example of an Illustrator’s work. My roommate was an avid Illustrator, embracing photos taken in the fleeting moment. He used a Leica covered with black tape so he could be as inconspicuous as possible.

Thank you. And I've done the same thing - covering up the words on the front of my cameras with pieces of black tape, that way people aren't reading things like "Nikon" or "Canon" when it's best to have the camera (and the photographer) attract as little attention as possible.

I've always thought it so strange that many consumers buy a new camera and immediately start using the camera strap which comes with it, something which loudly screams the camera brand and sometimes the model as well. Don't they realize that this is really a foolish thing to do? Aside from providing free advertising they're also broadcasting to the world that they have (potentially in some cases) an expensive camera body and lens hanging around their neck, just ripe for theft.....

Nowadays I feel like with the rise of smartphone camera capabilities with seeing less DSLR/Mirrorless cameras out and about one can comfortably assume that someone willing to carry one around is going to be fairly valuable.

Lot of good that does these days. You have to be ghillie-suit stealth to get candids. You try to direct people “don’t mind me” or “just carry on, I’m adjusting settings” but they won’t forget or move on. Suddenly, you’re their photographer for their instagram and they start directing you. They fixate and preen and pose and it kills the mood to even shoot so I just move on.

The best images I take are the ones I end up showing to the subject and they say “oh I didn’t even notice”.

Of course I knew who won as soon as you posted the image. I would have voted for that one too.

It is a totally different scene now, it was around 1965 and we were young and thought it was cool to customize our cameras. Now everybody and their brother have phones with cameras, nobody notices. And then there is the Press with their gigantic lenses everywhere.
