Tanagra (not really)
Quite an unusual capture and it works well for me. I'm assuming this was a long exposure with you hopping in and out of frame? The lowered saturation and slight motion give it an ethereal look

Yes, it was a long exposure on an old 1/2.3 sensor camera. I started the 30s shot and then walked down and stepped into it. Between the moon, the moving clouds, and waves, I got a really surreal look. Wasn’t expecting much when I took it!

Great entries this week. Congratulations to the winners and really to everyone. And @Donka thank you very much for the feedback and judging; it could not have been easy.

Thanks to @Donka for his judging and commentary , and congrats to the winners . Think that if it were my fate to judge this one I'd have slipped the kid next door a 20 and made the problem go away ..... too many good entries .
As to my entry , it was taken with a Sigma 14-24 at 14 . The only way I could get the whole thing into the frame . If I went to the edge of the bank , the perspective of the shot would have been all out of whack . As it was , there was a fair amount of tinkering to get the image to look OK.

Congratulations to AnotherScotsman, Laird Knox and MarkO, well done.

Was a little conflicted on which one to post, with some of the alternatives posted in the daily photos last week...and I had others.

This one of Bellizona is interesting because the town has 3 castles. I am attaching a daylight photo taken from the third castle that gives a better perspective. We didn't return up there at night with that photo taken at the lower entry to the third castle. While it is in Switzerland, it is on the Italian border, and Italian is the language spoken. Due to the mountain passes, everything funneled through that area, thus the castles supporting trade and military defenses.

Well done everyone. Great set of images. Definitely had image envy with more than a few.
Glad I didn’t have to pick a winner!

Mine was taken in Amsterdam. It was a work thing, so I had to pack light. The previous year I had no tripod, but it wasn’t good for the free evenings I had. So I bought a pocket tripod. With a long acre Swiss plate I managed to balance a D750 with a 24-70 on the end.

Fantastic judging @Donka. The images blew me away this week. Some stunning entries and a worthy winner.

Mine was takennon a bend in the road North of Broadford on the Isle of Skye. X-H1 and 12mm Samyang. There were some clouds in the sky that reflected the red tail lights of the car passing to give that light - not added later.

Interesting subject and composition - I love the angles in the building and the overall abstraction. I think I would have preferred to have seen a darker sky to really convey that night element. Great shot though.
Thanks. I took the picture about an hour, maybe one and a half before sunrise, so there was already astronomical twilight. The sky was even brighter in the picture straight out of the HDR treatment, and I darkened it quite a bit already.

- @Laird Knox
A well executed shot that has a real visual impact.

2nd - @Mark0
A fantastically well presented image and a great take on the theme.

1st - @anotherscotsman
Something about this image just draws me in and I found myself coming back to it upon multiple viewings.
@anotherscotsman's picture was my favourite as well. But apart from that I really would have had a hard time picking the rest of th winners. Too many great photos…

Just looked in out of interest to see who had won - very surprised to see it was me! Great entries from everyone and a few that I certainly thought of as winners in particular @Laird Knox, @Mark0 and InkMich. I've managed to get to Nelson on one occasion and would love to get the chance for a session at night (with or without LairdKnox!).

Great competition and feedback from @Donka, many thanks for the placement and thanks to everyone for their kind comments.

Photo was a 4-sec exposure from a bridge over the M56 in Cheshire where there was a sunset over the top of a layer of fog.

I've already got an idea for the next competition based on recent travels. Watch this space....

Some stunning entries that I thought seriously superb; fantastic topic for a competition and some wonderful entries which really would have tested the judgment of anyone set to adjudicate in this competition.

Wow! This is an awesome shot. This wasn't in my mind at all when I thought about the theme but it is a hugely impressive picture. Great subject and location but the lighting is superb and really makes the image. This looks more like a movie set in a studio than real life and I mean that as a compliment.
Thanks for taking the time to judge the contest. I'm glad I didn't win as I was out last week. ;)

It took a few tries to get the lighting down. I was getting too much light on the car and running around all those cholla in the dark was intimidating. I didn't bring my cable release so I had to get the shot down in 30 seconds. :)

The only added light is a quick flash on the front left side with a tungsten balanced source. Then a couple of quick bursts along the right side. Everything else in the image is illuminated by moonlight. The light in the sky above the mountains is from Las Vegas. I was shooting at 3200 ISO and I think around f4. I was using a 24mm prime so had a pretty good hyperfocal distance.

I too thought it looked like a set with some miniatures. I normally shoot with a tungsten white balance at night so this was a bit different than my usual intense blue skies.

Nelson is an interesting place. They keep adding more builds, vehicles, and rusty junk. Normally you can't photograph there at night - they have lots of lights, cameras and motion sensors. I'm lucky that the professor that teaches the night photography classes at CSN usually asks if I want to tag along when they do a field trip out there. I haven't shot much in the last two years so it was nice to get back in the groove.

Let me know if you are ever in Vegas and we can see if arrange it. ;)
