Hughmac: I love these shots, have done them and know how tricky they are to capture. One suggestion for next time Hugh – try taking the shot with the waterline level (front to back) with the horizontal plane of your lens so that you don’t see the see the waterline just the splash and the berry. Keep working on it as it does take lots of practice.

I realised once the photo was up that I needed to set up again and get the plane right, but as I'd spent half a day already I thought I would wait until I can get a larger glass container (fish tank?).
Also the ISO was far too high and needed Noise Ninja to sort the noise out.

Thanks for the helpful comments - I will have another go soon; it's one way of getting to eat more strawberries!

Great winners, one of those competitions that give me a sinking feeling as more entries come in ...

Cheers :)

Hugh

Congrats to the winners and thanks Peter for the extensive feedback.

I'm not adverse to a tripod as the shot below demonstrates (my other choice for this week's contest), my "Tripods are for wimps comment was very tongue in cheek, although I try not to use one if I can. My submitted shot was tripod free and hand held at 1/15sec. My X100 is small and light enough with a lens that enables me to do so.

I like this one. What exposure did you use on this one?

My comment was tongue in cheek as well.

Hand-held at 1/15 sec. - well done. Sometimes I get tired lugging heavy gear around. This past weekend I went out and left the big stuff at home after straining a back muscle doing yard work. It felt quite liberating.

Keep working at it Hugh. I rescued a used fish tank from someone's garbage and it works very well. The larger volume of water allows you to try dropping all kinds of different things into water like fruits, vegetables, the neighbor's cat...great fun. ;)

I tried the same type of shot last year for the first time with a lemon. With no flash, they looked awful. I will give it another go now I have some speed lights. A lot more deletes, than keeps for me.
I used one of the wife's clear storage containers (like you put dry pasta in).

C&A - Please donate me 1 fish tank + 1 cat and I will see what I can do. Maybe a little more interesting with goldfish still swimming around?

AFB - I have one speedlight (Chinese, brand new for £8 on auction !! - their mistake starting too low as it should have gone for £50), which I aimed towards the ceiling.
Not really knowing what I was doing, I aimed in various directions until the results looked better.

Cheers :)

Hugh

Congrats Schtumple on a verycreative photo. Some great shots this week. Sorry to miss joining in. :)

Thanks Cheese&Apple for the contest subject and critique. Great entries and a brilliant winning shot by Schtumple.

I agree the cyclist in my shot would have been better had he not been dead centre, but this is a snap from an old pocket IXUS camera, where the delay between pressing the shutter button and actually taking the photo was anybody's guess - I'm lucky he was in the shot at all. :)
