“Mountain memories”

Intriguing, seeing the interplay of these 4 images makes me wonder …

What’s the story here; a hat, people dressed with gear / stuff , not strangers, on a quest perhaps?

Entry 2 Post #3 tizeye
“cyclist”

May the wind be gently on your face and the sun on your back, mile-after mile-after mile ….

This captures the solo times of road cycling, become one with the road

Entry 3 Post #4 Hughmac
“Who dun it”

Love this, classic murder mystery .. or is it?

Entry 4 Post #5 redshifted
“waterfall”

I can hear the soothing trickle under the canopy of trees

Entry 5 Post #6 oblomow
“voidless etheral”

This! Spirits from the past, that somehow only a camera with a special filter can see??

Entry 6 Post #7 Thilus
“above it all”

Capturing the golden moment is the eternal quest of some, it’s special and magical, kudos

Entry 7 Post #8 Laird Knox
“Hanging in the sky”

Framing Comet Neowise in a manner not seen has become challenging, you’ve succeeded magnificently here.

My eye can meander and wander among the rocks

(Astrophotography is near and dear to my heart)

Entry 8 Post #9 mackmgg
“landscape depth”

Classic landscape taken to artistic level, the foreground darkness and each layer of background landscape feature become brighter perfectly captured, adds near infinite depth.

Entry 9 Post #10 Clix Pix
“still life”

This … captivates me, it’s art gallery worthy

Entry 9 Post #13 Alexander.Of.Oz
“Urbanscape”

Wow, darkness / shadows with bright / brilliant colors inter played

Entry 10 Post #14 mollyc
“backlit”

This …. Lovely portrait usage of lighting / shadows here , enhancing the subject’s pondering mood

Entry 11 Post #15 deep diver
“surfs up” –
late entry accepted
Every activity has a sub-culture, things to it that are hard to describe to “outsiders”; this image captures the solitary stillness of a surfer , possibly waiting for that last wave of the day, or remembering the waves ridden

As a 2nd time judge those are my thoughts, and below the top 3 rankings.

3rd place: “backlit” by mollyc

2nd and 1st were neck-neck, but I had to choose, so ....

2nd place: “still life” by Clix Pix

1st place and winner: “landscape depth” by mackmgg

Congratulations to all who participated.

Great judging @mtbdudex ! An interesting theme for a contest and with plenty of variation and exploration amongst the entries.

Congratulations to the podium placeholders!

@mollyc I have to ask your lighting setup for this. It appears to be a single large softbox in front and high to the right of the model, who has been caught in a great moment of pensiveness or possible reluctance perhaps. It's a stunning result and one I would love to emulate in a fashion for a selfie I need for my headshot on my new press card! Not that I have the hair to achieve that great look! It's more the face hugging light I would love to recreate and portraiture is something I haven't really played with. I am not sure if a rim light was incorporated into the mix for the hair to glow like that. Nonetheless, a stunning result as I said before!

Wow! I guess I gotta come up with a theme now.

That shot was actually a still out of a time-lapse:

It was a good thing I brought a spare battery with me, or the time-lapse would have killed it before it even got dark enough for comet viewing!

Congrats on winning.
Side bar on time-lapse: I used "TimeLapse Assembler" since 2009, and a few months back found out it's DOA.
I purchased GlueMotion 3 weeks ago from the app store and have been pleased with it so far, which app did you use to stitch yours?
I then put that into iMovie for sound/txt overlays.

Thanks for mentioning GlueMotion, I have been using FCPX and agonising over the light balancing aspect of things, will have to give this a try now!

Thanks for the very safe third place! ?

@Alexander.Of.Oz This is actually just a single beauty dish camera left and I had my son sit facing it directly. The heavy shadows are done in camera because the light fall of is so fast from the small light source and because he was sitting so close to it. Here is the SOOC. There was very little editing to be done other than cloning out the dish and converting to B&W. Also a little bit of blackening of the frame camera left where the background didn't extend.

Congratulations to Mackmgg -- the shadows and colors in that image, the depth and range, all were lovely and definitely prize-winning!

Whew, a sign of relief here -- second is a nice, safe place to be! :). Didn't expect to place on the podium at all, though, so sort of a surprise! There were some intriguing and terrific entries this past week -- congratulations to all!

One morning as I came out to the kitchen my eye fell on the way the sun was streaming in the window over the sink and touching the basket-type coffee filter I'd set out on the counter the night before in preparation for making my coffee. The interplay of light and shadow in the folds of the filter intrigued me. Before doing anything else, I immediately ran to the other room and grabbed the camera and the 90mm macro lens and got right to work before the light shifted and changed.

Peering through the lens at the subject, I also noticed how the paper filter's texture came into prominence, too, due to the light, adding another element of interest. I had fun playing with slightly different angles and perspectives, and the sun and my subject were both quite cooperative. :) Once done with shooting, I immediately put my subject to work by filling it with a measure of coffee and sticking it into the coffee machine, brewing up a fresh pot of java, which I enjoyed while doing the post-processing later. The editing was fairly straightforward, primarily increasing the darkness of the shadows for stronger impact.

So you never know when and where a photo is waiting to be taken.......and how even the most mundane and ordinary of items can turn out to be quite interesting when viewed from close-up!

I actually did this one just using QuickTime. I'm not sure when they added it, but now there's a "File -> Open Image Sequence" which just makes a time lapse. It's quick and easy, but it doesn't really do any other processing, so there's still a bit of flicker in this one when the exposure changes.

I've also been a fan of LR Timelapse, since it will detect those exposure jumps and smooth them over multiple frames. I didn't have it installed yet on this computer though, so I just used the one that was already there.

Thanks so much for sharing your lighting recipe @mollyc ! That was what I imagined! In front of him, above and to his right. You achieved a fantastic result with a simple setup, just the kind of thing I will try today. Thanks again and congratulations on a great portrait of him, I hope he liked it.

Thank you for taking the time to judge this week's contest.

I had never been to this location before. The tripod was literally backed up against a picnic table and the rocks were maybe ten or fifteen feet away. Focus was the big challenge on this one. Luckily I was using a wide lens (24mm) so it was a bit forgiving. I did close the aperture a stop to f-2 so I could gain slightly more depth of field.

When adding light to foreground objects I don't like to do a solid wash. In this case I was shining the flashlight through a bush to give it that mottled look. I held the light steady so that the shadows were a bit more stark than if I had moved the source around.

I know I used comet shots in back to back weeks but it was nice to use a new image. I had so many in my archives that I wanted to post. :)
