The new iPP 12.9 might not be lighter and the 11" might be even a lot heavier if you count in the smart cover/folio and smart keyboard/folio. These things are looking like they have double the material because of the back protection than before. I choose the smart cover and not the smart keyboard for my 12.9 because of the weight difference. It weights 155 grams. If it might have double that weight the new 12.9 with a smart folio is substantially heavier than before...

Yeah I would have preferred no back protection in order to cut down on weight (I just use a skin to protect the back from scratches). But maybe it was necessary for the new two angle design. In any case, I guess it’s necessary since the smart connector is on the back now.

Yes but they give up the weight advantage with that. I doesn't make sense to save 10% on weight in the 12.9 and make the device 1 mm thinner (with the sacrifice of better battery life) if the cover is double as thick and weights double as much...

Personally, i don't even need to protect the back from scratches. I do like though that the new mounting system seems more secure. It might be close to a wash on the keyboard, as reduced dimensions, but the added surface area of the back. I think it will be close. I prefer to just to put egrip material on the back and call it a day. Why waste all the effort making it slim, just to bulk it up with a case.

I do get mad at Apple for always pushing for slimmer rather than battery size/life, on their phones. Now it seems, the iPads are affected by this thinking as well.

Anyway i could not decide so i took the conservative approach and ordered the 11" with just the new pencil for now. No worries it won't get heavy use, and no worries about the weight. My 2017 12.9" gets less use and when i need it with the keyboard i have no real complaints. If i can find someone to buy that one i'll be quicker to get the new 12.9".
