I still don't understand how it would have such an old purchase date. Or is that something Apple does to dissuade people from buying from non authorized sellers. If you had a friend who bought a brand new MacBook Pro, and he decided 50 days in that he wanted to get rid of it and you bought it from him, there is nothing to stop you from adding Apple care yourself.

The warranty has been voided. A year of 0000 isn't valid in the system and the oldest date in the system is 1985.

You might want to confirm if an Apple Store will service your Mac given the serial number is invalid. The Store staff need a valid S/N to order replacement parts in the system.

Crazy that the reseller charged you above retail for something that fell off a truck.

Nearly everyone is eligible for the edu discount and the same MacBook Air costs $1,394 if you were willing to wait a couple weeks for it to ship from Shanghai.
The serial number is still valid the purchase date is the only problem. It would be like taking in a 13 month old macbook without apple are. Thats what im assuming.

I wouldn't assume that. Apple won't repair demo units if even if they have a valid serial and warranty start date. They won't repair iPhones declared lost either.

I specifically asked if they would service it and she said yes, but it would be out of pocket. Now obviously the only way to find out is to take it in. So i may just do that. And ill update the thread if I do

It won't dissuade people from buying from unauthorised sellers because Apple don't publicise that they do this. It will however serve exactly the purpose intended: immediately flag-up that it's a MIA device when someone calls-up, like OP did.

a little update, I took it in to an apple store. It was busy so I got lucky and happened bump into an operations manager helping out on the floor. I told him the situation, he looked up the S/N and confirmed that there was no warranty but I would not have an issue repairing It in store at my cost. Ill post this in my first post for anyone that comes across this problem in the future.

nvm, won't let me edit anymore

I live in the UK and my local Apple Store is actually closer than the nearest McDonalds!
I'm also in the UK and can walk to my local Apple Store, which is about the same distance as the nearest McDonalds. Not that I'd ever set foot in McDonalds or eat their disgusting food.
