This actually kind of reminds me of the Mac Pro in 2007 when it was spewing out benzene. It certainly isn’t out of the realm of possibilities that your MacBook Air is somehow emitting a toxic chemical.
I remember this and my first thought was: did someone spill beer and weed over the logicboard??

Apple devices often have a factory smell to them, fresh out of the box, and I wouldn't rule out that smell being potent enough that you can taste it, but it doesn't last very long.

If you're sensitive to strong odours, it could be that simple. I wouldn't like to try and diagnose anything more elaborate.

Yup, my 15 Air had that sweet sweet factory chemical smell, lasted for about 2 weeks.

OK, this is gonna sound crazy, but after using my 13 inch MacBook Air, M3 in 'midnight' for 10 minutes or longer, I begin to notice a weird taste in my mouth, slightly grainy and metallic. I can't tell if I might be inhaling some fumes from it, or I am absorbing some chemicals from the finish through my hands (midnight w/ anodization). I have other MacBooks in the house (none in this finish or generation), and have never experienced this before.

I have also reproduce this by stopping use and re-starting on and off, and the taste immediately comes back!

thoughts? am I alone? LOL
If using means licking your MBA at midnight, then that explains your issue…

If indeed this is a serious question. There's a plethora of medical conditions that cause a metallic taste. To rule out an allergic reaction when using the MBA, use an external keyboard and mouse.
over the five pages of this thread, someone’s probably mentioned this, but literally just being too hungry is enough make one’s mouth taste metallic…(i.e. going long enough without eating [or just without eating carbs] to go into ketosis)

anyway, respect for giving a solid answer to the most entertaining question I’ve seen in almost 15 years of browsing this forum

A metallic taste is a common form of aura, associated with migrane and seizure disorders, hence my previous question. I am not a doctor and this is not a diagnosis, but I do suggest taking this seriously.
yknow, actually…this part. forgot about that, which is rather ironic given that I experience auras myself. (metallic taste just isn’t a part of mine personally)

@erkanasu might be worth checking in with your doc if this doesn’t wear off.

This will also sound weird but sometimes when I plug my iPhone in to charge the texture of the back feels different when I run my finger across it, almost like the phone is vibrating at a microscopic level or something. I'm being 100% serious.
I get this too
oh, this is legitimate and incredibly common. I feel it all the time on my MBP when charging. it’s an extremely basic answer: the plug isn’t grounded. nothing to worry about.

here is another way to describe the sensation - it's like subtly tasting beach sand or grainy dry dirt...lol so freaking weird.

after using my 15" air for ~1 hr with no issues,

went to the silver 13" m3 and tasted it again within ~1 minute, confirmed I CAN reproduce it on a silver m3! 🤯
man, this went from being funny to being straight-up wacky—truly best of luck in figuring this out, sorry for joining the peanut gallery in the beginning and really hope it’s nothing serious!

Are you pregnant?

Occasionally fine-ground surface finishes will produce a texture that interacts with the ridges on your fingertip in a harmonic way gives that effect. When I was a kid we had a record player I could run my finger along and the vibrations would cause my heart to skip a beat & I’d have to catch my breath momentarily. I’ve found it on surfaces a few more times in my life and it makes me slightly dizzy every time. Weird.

Try a blind test to see if it became psychological. Close your eyes and let someone hand you the devices one by one. Only touch them in a way that you cannot understand which device it is.
I already said gloves made it go away. And does not happen on other machines l own. That should be pretty conclusive

Design goal achieved!

I have not experienced this myself in brief interactions with the midnight color.

Current thinking: either the grainy texture of the new coating is producing some sort of “fake taste” response in my mouth and brain, or I literally am having a chemical reaction with the new coating. Goes away after 10 mins of putting it away, becomes present within a minute of use

I may have missed this in an earlier post but does it occur with a fully powered off, unplugged machine as well?

Most people are laughing at this but it could be that you are allergic to something in the color or the metal itself..
Metallic taste in mouth is usually a sign of metal poisoning
