Saying goodbye to my iPhone 4S I've had since launch. Since the preview of iOS7, I've determined that it's a catch-up update for features already found in Android. So I'm going to buy a Galaxy S4, mostly because of the bigger screen. I was going to wait until the iPhone 5S is release, but I don't see Apple doing anything drastic to the hardware - only making it comparable to S4/HTC One in terms of performance.

While I feel the iPhone 5S will have a better camera, I still think the S4 is the better option for me - mostly due to the bigger screen. I really was hoping the 5S would be wider (as well as taller), but after playing with my sisters iPhone 5 and a co-workers S4, S4 wins on the screen.

I own pretty much everything Apple makes except for the Mac Pro (the iMac does just fine ;)) so this is going to be weird. I just need phone that let's me set my own default apps, has better app inter-communication, and bigger screen, the 3 main features I was hoping Apple would do, even it it meant scraping their existing plans for the design of the iPhone 5S.

Wish me luck! Don't worry, I'm not parted with my beloved iPad 4th gen! :p

Translation: Please reassure me I made a good purchase.

For OP:

Another advantage of the S4 is storage. You can get a 32 or 64 GB Micro SD and put all your videos and photos on it. I also use my Micro SD to backup my phone using My Backup Pro.

Yes, the HTC One is REALLY attractive and I was going to get that one. I was hung up on the camera. Add to that fact that these cell phones take photos in 16x9 ratio and I usually crop to a 3:2 ratio, which I think I'd loose too much resolution on the HTC One. I really wish they went at least with an 8MP version of whatever it is they were trying to do. 4MP is too little - and yes I understand big megapixels and such.

Plus, I'm going to put the phone in a case so the design of the HTC One goes out of the window on that front. But combine the lack of IQ on the camera (for my needs), HTC's reputation for slow phone updates, and the battery life (I see the S4 fairs better on battery, but not as good as iPhones, but I'll compromise), S4 is a better phone overall - ESPECIALLY when it comes with the latest version of Android (4.2.2) out of the box.

Out of the box the S4 doesn't take 13MP photos, it takes 9-10MP I think, to keep the photo 16:9. If you set it to 13MP in the settings it changes the aspect ratio.

Yep....

8mp out of the box at 16:9

Need to change ratio to 3:2 for 13mp :)

To me, the only thing htc has over Samsung is that gorgeous LCD screen.

And the only thing the Samsung has over htc is that nice 13 mp camera (I rarely post stuff on social sites, so I am not moved by the social cam thing of the htc).

It's so hard for me to decide too. Everything else about both is fine for me. 32 GB is enough for me (I can use a sd card on s4 to get that extra 16, and I use most of my storage for media), build quality is moot for me (yep!), and screen size differences aren't a big deal either. I can easily get comfortable to htc's two buttons or samsung's three, I can adapt.

But the fact is if the one had a 13 (or even 8) mp camera, I would buy it without thinking. And if the s4 actually had an ips LCD screen (I don't think I want that rugged version though), again I would have bought that without thinking.

So again, both htc and Samsung have managed to put me on wait and hold mode to see if something else that combines an LCD screen AND a high res decent camera (with a good sensor too) and decent battery life. Both tick the boxes, but in htc's case the cam is the fail (for me), and in s4's case the amoled is the fail (for me).

Two great choices but still not able to satisfy :(

I am in the same exact boat as you!! However, I'm leaning towards the S4...but guess what.... The White 32gb version is unavailable for AT&T at the moment :(

Sigh.....First world problems

For helping the op pick the better device. That's for what.

It is responses like this that result in continual arguments in this sub-forum. For some, the S4 is clearly the "better device", for others the HTC One. It really depends which factors are important to an individual and which are of lesser importance.

Exactly... I may have chosen to keep my One, but based on what the OP wants from the device it would appear to me the S4 would be better suited.

One size doesn't fit all.... At least there is a good choice of handsets this year to chose from.

By the way, what happened to the blog you were thinking of setting up? I think several people here expressed interest in it.

I have all the bones of it setup. I just want to add more content before I release it to the wild so that there are at least a number of articles for people to read rather than release it with just one or two. :) Finding time to do it lately has been the killer though.

Ya, I figured this out when check the file info (I love the fact I can see the EXIF data of a photo by default) and it added up to 8MP. I looked into the camera settings and set it to 3:2.

Also, no camera on the lock screen by default. Took me forever to figure out how to enable "shortcuts on the lock screen", but now I have the camera, GMail, Messaging, and Phone on there. I had a PIN enabled, so it doesn't let you selected "multiple widgets on lockscreen" and had to disable it, figure out the shortcuts, then re-enable my PINLock. Convoluted.

I'll have a more thorough review soon. Don't like not having iOS's "tap to jump to the top of the screen" option though. Lots of scrolling...

I would like to know how it syncs with your iMac for photos and music, contacts etc.

Cheers

I'll have it in my review. I can tell you iTunes+iPhone is MUCH easier. I'm resorting to the drag and drop method for my S4 using Android Transfer on iMac. I'm also testing out Kies, a program and app my Samsung.

Kies is pretty terrible tbh...

Yea I miss that about iOS too, thankfull you can scroll much faster in Android than iOS depending on how fast you flick.

Boat browser, and I believe Dolphin and Opera, have the option of moving straight to the top or bottom of a web page.

To get that small convenience, I'd have to lose the other conveniences of synced passwords, histories, tabs and bookmarks from Chrome though :(

Ya, I've been playing with it all morning. Uninstalled from my iMac. Going to use Android Transfer and see how that goes. Someone told me about iSyncr and the app Rocket Player is pretty much like working with iTunes. Going to buy and SD card today so I may just resort to dragging and dropping from iTunes Media Folders. I love that the S4 has a File Manager App so I can see all my files in one place.

Once I figure out a good and easy way to get media to my device that I can live with, I'll be good. I still use iTunes (an Amazon if the price is right) for all my music purchases.

Once I get over this learning curve and figure out all my options (and they're ALOT of options) I'll be good.

I use Doubletwist for music (and airplay to my AppleTv). I use Dropbox to sync with my iMac for photos (there are a couple of threads on setting up Automator so pictures from Dropbox can be incorporated into photostream on your other devices and vice/versa).

Dropbox also takes care of uploading my videos.
