Why is having a touchscreen on a laptop a desire able feature? That's like using a keyboard with an iPad....you can but without a mouse you are constantly removing your hand from keyboard to use touch edit controls. Seems very inefficient. If the Ativ were like the Yoga, I'd understand. But as-is, seems like a confused mix.

For notes, drawings, games, and windows 8. Windows 8 is designed for touch, so having a touch screen makes it a lot faster and easier to use. Also, touchpads are ergonomically in the wrong place and your hand will get pain if you sit on a desk and mouse a lot. It's better to get a full sized external mouse, or use a touchscreen. Also since you can flex the hinge a full 180 degrees, you can turn the laptop upside down and use it as a touchscreen laptop, something you can't do with a mac.

Windows 8 apps are not all designed for touch though. And turning it upside down to use it requires a large flat surface... you won't be doing this on a train or plane tray table, and rarely on a normal sized desk. It's a feature that is anything but ergonomic. Get a Yoga.....at least that really can be used like at tablet even if a very thick one. This design is a semi aborted gimmick.

Touchscreens on a tablet form factor make sense. On a laptop form factor, total waste.

This is by far the best ultrabook available.

Stunning display. Since for 13", 1600x900 is a great resolution you can just use 200% scaling with no issues at all.

But there are 2 problems with the device.

1) Is HD 4400 integrated GPU enough to run on that high resolution?
2) The price. For $1600, did you get the newer 8GB RAM, 256GB version?

Nice choice!!!

The 8GB/256 version makes this one of the best ultra books around, but honestly, the price makes it a hard sell against the 13" Retina Macbook Pro.

Yeah you're still trolling. Sounds familiar to me.

Your post makes no sense.

Your other posts clearly does though.

Apple getting desperate. Stock will continue to plummet.

Apple is stooping pretty low nowadays.

Apple getting super desperate.

Apple makes their living preying on uneducated consumers with too much money and not much sense

Apple should be worrying about the competition. Hence why the best new feature of the iPhone 5 is the extra row of icons.

and my favorite...

iPhone 5 feels too light and very cheap.

Why again are you on a Apple forum?

Personal attacks? That warrants a nice word of advice from the board's mods.

Plus this is the alternatives forum. Don't expect us to praise Apple 100%.

Very nice. I almost got one of those but it was a bit out of my price range that i wanted to send so i settled on the Yoga.

Sounds familiar? Go to a Samsung forum.

Nobody forced you to read this. If you dont like it, dont come to the alternative section of the forum where they talk about.......wait for it......................

Other products!

Have you gotten the chance to work with a touchscreen laptop for a few days?

I refused to touch my S7's screen the first few days I had it mainly due to my OCD and problem with fingerprints...but once I started, it really made things easier. When I'm browsing a webpage I can easily scroll and press on something without the need to use the trackpad and move the pointer. That may sound stupid but it really isn't.

Another thing I like is Windows 8-specific. When I'm using Metro apps and not use ModernMix with them, I can easily slide to the right from the left edge of the screen and go through all of my open apps. I guess touchscreens on laptops are just things you have to experience first, and you either like em or hate em.

I actually dont like using the trackpads on a laptop. Thats why i got a touchsceen as well. I either use mouse or use the touchscreen. However, you can use the same gestures on the trackpad and it will do the same thing as doing it on the screen ....like going back to the last screen.

I agree to an extent but what would flesh out this idea, was if the screen could fold back, then swivel around and rest on top of the keyboard. his would seem more practical, considering it wouldn't add too much bulk, especially since your keyboard isn't supporting the device by resting on a flat surface.

Anyways, windows 8 + touchscreen hasn't won me over yet. I'm still quite happy with my quad core i7 Sony Vaio running Win 7 (best OS in my opinion, even trumps OSX).

You just described the Yoga, a very good design and the one Samsung should have copied. Not this half-way thing.

Yes, Lenovo did, although there are others as well. Surprising that Samsung didn't just copy what is already a great design rather than do this. But that's somewhat typical for the brand....they come up with ideas and gizmos that show promise, but they half-implement them and then move onto the next gadget. They don't seem to value refinement of ideas all that much. They just do it, sell it and then abandon it for something else. Quickly. And repeatedly.

I'm betting there will be a 360-foldable version of the Ativ within 6 months. One that behaves exactly like the Lenovo Yoga.

Anyone been to Best Buy lately? It's hilarious how 9/10 laptops try to look exactly like a macbook.

----------

I'll never bother with an ultrabook without a touchscreen again.

I've owned 2 laptops with touch screens. One was a high end Sony Vaio. I never used them. Mostly because I never encountered any software that utilized them. And normal everyday thinks like web browsing, and office documents, using the mouse is way more precise and quick.

But you just got it a couple days ago and are in the honeymoon period. I thought I might be using the touchscreen regularly too.

If I had the option to get the laptop for even $50 less without a touchscreen, I would have taken it.
