4) Apple has never intentionally shorted production to boost a products viability. Such ploys rarely work and reduces income -- which is Apple's goal. It wants to sell as many as it can. Teasing consumers does not make them a dime. It's a losing proposition.

Plus, Apple doesn't need to do more in building the buzz about the iPad. It's already there. Their past successes and current skyrocketing customer satisfaction give Apple and the iPad the buzz and public awareness that any company would love to have.

Yeah, I'm really wondering if anyone believes the artificial shortage conspiracy theories (about anything). Not selling your product seems like a bad marketing strategy, and difficult to explain to shareholders. I'll admit this isn't something I've looked into deeply, but it's always struck me as people being mad they can't get their hands on something, and looking for someone to blame. Well, and people who like conspiracy theories.

Wouldn't the logical explanation be that the shortages are due to the delays that have been reported regarding the touchscreen manufacturer(s)?

I called a random Apple store today (not the one I went to yesterday) and the sales person said:

1. They will open at 9AM for reservations only.

2. At 10AM the whole store will be open and there will be 2 lines. One for reservations and one for walk ins.

3. The walk in line is first come, first serve and their store was sent additional iPads to accommodate those people (until they run out).

4. At 3PM or when the reserve line is gone (which ever is longer), those who reserved an iPad and didn't pick them up will be sold to anyone who wants one (still first come first serve).

5. The Camera Connection accessory will NOT be available.

6. They are expecting to sell all their iPad stock.

:apple:

^^

Thank You.

you're welcome. Plus, it was nice to speak to a salesperson who was saying something closer to what everyone (who has been to a launch before) was saying. That other salesperson probably didn't know what he was talking about. :p

I just got back from the Apple store and the sales guy said this:

5. They will hold all pre orders until the line is gone or 3PM; whichever is longer.

Uh... I hope not. I'd kind of like to get there at noon, and avoid the worse of the line. The pre-order message said they'd hold reservations until 3pm. If the line is over by 11am, I'd kind of be screwed.

what the sales person meant was, if you get their at 2:59pm and their is still a big line and you're all the way in the back, your are still getting you reserved iPad. but if you show up at 3:01pm, they will make you wait in the First-Come-First-Served line.

if the lines are over at 11am, your iPad will still be on hold till 3pm, if you don't show up before that, then your iPad will be on sale as regular inventory.

Got it sorry... whichever is longer. I misread.
