Just ordered:
27"
i9
8gb (upgrading to 32 myself)
512gb SSD
Radeon 580x
Same system I ordered through apple refurbished three months ago.
Can't complain !
My first Apple product.
Runs Catalina with no issues and already loaded plenty of software. Additional Ram ordered and waiting for installation
Only changed the keyboard to a touch k1 with separate numbers as the original keyboard drove me nuts.
Connected to a network with several window machines. Somehow a pain to set up but got it working nicely.

No, the RAM on the 21.5" is not user accessible. You would have to remove the screen yourself or have Apple or an authorized repair center do it for you.
I read that it's only the 27" that can be upgraded/changed. Am sure a non-technophobe person like myself will be able to confirm.
Okay. Only RAM on the 27 can be modified post-purchase. That is a fact. If you’re buying a 21.5, get as much as you need at purchase time because you cannot change it later.
Thanks, guys.

Do you know if base-model iMac 27" RAM can be user-upgraded to 64GB or only 32GB?

Apple site says base-model iMac RAM is configurable up to 32GB, while the other two models are configurable up to 64GB.

I just wanted to make sure that I can install 64GB of RAM on the entry-level iMac 27" despite what Apple says. Thanks.

I am replacing my 2012 i7 MAC Mini 480 GB SSD. Awaiting my Black Friday weekend purchase on a slow boat from China. I opted for the following base model with one upgrade:

- 27” 5K
- i5 (3.0 ghz)
- 8GB RAM
- 256 GB SSD
- Radeon 570X

On Saturday, I ordered a Samsung T5 external SSD 1TB (Amazon $137.99j and on Thursday I ordered 32 GB of Crucial 2019 iMac upgrade RAM (Amazon $131.00).

I use my computer for browsing, email and some small word processing and spreadsheet. I do not play games on my computer.

We finally replaced an early 2009 24" that had had an SSD upgrade. New iMac is the 27", 3.7 GHz i5-9600KF, 8 GB memory, 1 TB SSD, Radeon 580X. Added another 16GB of memory (Crucial, from newegg, $75).

It's more configuration than we need, particularly the GPU, but the cash situation was an unexpected use it or lose it. The last iMac lasted 10 years and 1 month, and we're hoping for the same for this one. Fortunately it came installed with Mojave; one of the genealogy apps we use isn't Catalina ready and won't be until after the new year.

Yes & no--Supposedly, there is a "performance problem" by installing beyond 32 (like 64 or 128) in the base model because the peanut-sized 32gb blade "ssd" part can't store the entire ram image all-ssd to quickly wake from sleep. In other words, you'll have to wait a while to "wake it up" while it reads xGBs of data from the 7200 HDD portion. This could actually be a long time.

Whether there are other performance issues beyond the "wake from sleep" problem I don't know. I would love to know whether this is actually a real problem on the base model or merely theoretical. How often are you using beyond 32GB of your ram? Can you just set it to "never sleep" (with energy efficiency penalty of course).

I suggest (1) buying the base model and (2) buying 128gb of ram to satisfy the curiosity of your shallow pocket macrumor brethren.

So I ordered CTO today:

27-inch iMac
i9
8 GB RAM (will upgrade to 24 GB on my own)
1 TB SSD
580X

figured this should last me for many years to come (albeit I thought the same about 2017 i5-7600K one but I found where its limits are and it is not enough for my work)

Waiting on a trade-in to finish processing, then ordering the i9 w/ 1TB SSD & Vega. I don't really need the Vega right now but I think I'm going to swap my Fuji X-T2 for an X-T3 soon so I'm giving myself a little extra horsepower to explore video.

Love it.

The only thing I would have done is skip the f-ed up apple ssd prices and upgraded the fusion drive with a sata ssd instead. I put in a 4tb samsung 860 Evo ssd that cost me $579. Not even available from apple at any price.

But to each his own.

Congrats, what made you not wait for a redesigned iMac to show up? Rumors claims it should be out in a few months

The thread was not dead, just sleeping. Four week wait is a tough one.

Updated iMac (Comet Lake-S, updated GPU) may show itself at WWDC or before BTS starts, but a redesigned (new chassis And industrial design) iMac isn’t likely to be released until 2021 when Apple moves the iMac to an Apple designed CPU and off of Intel.

It might mean Apple is clearing out stock for a new product or a components availability issue for the current product. Maybe displays.

I think the latter is more likely. I suspect the delay is somehow related to the coronavirus pandemic. Perhaps Apple's full work force is not yet back on the job. If you look most places, delivery is still a bit delayed.

I bought a new 21 inch in April;
3.2GHz 6-core 8th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.6GHz
32GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory
1TB SSD storage
Radeon Pro Vega 20 with 4GB of HBM2 memory
Shipped with Catalina.
Kept have kernel panics upon waking from sleep. I shipped it back and will wait.

I bought:

27 in 3.7 GHz 6-Core
16 GB memory
512 SSD
Radeon Pro 580X with 8GB of GDDR5 memory

I had a hard time deciding between SSD and fusion and decided to go with 512 SSD for $90 more.

Shipping Date: Expected by Sept 22 o_O

If you can hold out -- based on that shipping date, I'd cancel and see if Apple announces a new iMac in September.

I really need one for (digital) school purposes asap, so I would wait but not sure when they'd arrive even if they are announced in September.
