Well, every other computer company, save for Apple, has put the latest intel mobile chip into thier laptops. So, why the delay? What do you think? Is Apple working on improving the MBP in other ways as well? Trying to clear inventory of the first MBP? They are having trouble getting male and female Merom MBP's to mate so they don't have enough to sell yet? What do you think?

Good question. I've never been able to understand the lengthiness of the upgrade cycle for Apple. It seems as though the other PC manufacturers are on top of the ball, but Apple isn't. No offense to Apple, of course.

You know what else I forgot to mention is that everyone expects the new MBP the 5th or the 12th. Obviously the 5th is not going to happen and the 12th, well there are already so many other things supposed to be coming out on the 12th (new imac, new ipods, movie downloads, new things to stream movies from computer to home theatre or whatever...) that it seems unlikely that a new MBP will fit in there. But no one knows yet so...

No one knows for sure, but the best part is that we know it's coming very soon. And that makes it worth waiting, because no one wants to see an update a week after a purchase.

There is going to be massive demand from the minute these Core 2 Duo machines are released. I think Apple is holding back till Merom is in full swing production-wise and Apple can fill the supply chain so as to avoid the nasty delays that hit the first lot of MacBook Pros.

As for what the new systems will bring, I believe there will be a hot pink option and they have a hole for a lanyard - that seems to sell everything else these days ;)

Faster, possibly longer battery life, cooler, 64 bit, just basically "better."

If you really want top-of-the-line you'd wait for the Santa Rosa chipset next year with all the new bells and whistles that will make Merom really scream.

uhh guys... apple's only behind by like...a week at this point. Now if 2-3 months from now we still don't have merom then yeah, apple's dragging it's heals. but come on, it's been one stinkin week since other manufacturers have released new laptops.

Part of me know that you are right but I cannot wait that long. When HD's become in whole or in part flash-memory based I think that that is where it's going to be at. If that comes with Santa Rosa then I will really be kicking myself.

In regards to the "hot pink" forcast, I think you are wrong. The new MBP will most likey have an option to get "bunnies and duckies" pattern with a baby blue backround covering your MBP. It's obvious.

I'm one of the many eagerly awaiting the merom-based MBPs, and I have two theories about the apparent delay (WRT other OEMs):

1) Apple's just being slow... they're a smaller outfit (than Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.) and they've never had to beat competition to market with new hardware, so they're just not as fast as the others.

2) Apple's going to unveil 801.11n-based video streaming AirPort Express hubs on the 12th, and wants to hold off on announcing the 801.11n-ready MBPs until then.

Cheers

Shall we agree to disagree on the hot pink and just accept the likelihood of the Hello Kitty MacBook Pro?

Now correct me if I wrong, but I don't think that the other companys have only announced the they have Merom computers. Nobody is actually shipping them yet?

If thats the case then Apple isn't behind by any means...

I wouldn't expect Apple of all people to release non standardised equipment.

School is starting soon... I can only hold off till September 25...

When are the other computer companies supposed to begin shipping Mermom?

And I thought Apple was supposed to get first orders on Merom so shouldn't that give apple an advantage to ship date and what not?

Unless you can get a really good deal on the current MBP (like the deals mentioned here) or you absolutely have to have it to get work done, then yes the wait is worth it.

### I'm under the impression that Dell and Alienware are shipping merom based machines...now. For Apple, my guess is Paris Expo..which would be sweet..cuz I'll be there.

You know, with everyone waiting to buy the new MBPs, there is likely to be a HUGE backlog like there was when they were first announced. We could be waiting WEEKS longer to actually get one.

Maybe buying now isn't such a bad idea after all...

Sure, buy now then. I made this mistake last year and I am not doing ot again. Bought my imac g5 rev. b and 1 week later a newer one came out with faster processor, isight and remote. My imac was still awesome but you know, it was old in a way.

Most people, regardless of what they use thier machines for, how much or how little, want the latest version of a product. Way it works.

As long as MBPs and MBs are flying off the shelves, Apple is in no hurry to update them. Rest assured there will be an update before the holiday shopping season.

Perhaps this is related to the Airport-based delay for Mac Pros?

I think one thing that can't be over looked when saying that Apple is behind other compies such as Dell is the fact that they only sell two basic laptop models. Dell has like half a million. When a customer comes to Apple they basically have 2 choices: MacBook and MacBook Pro. So when someone goes to Dell and is looking for a laptop they might buy the Core [1] Duo model becasue it is cheaper. When a customer goes to Apple (when C2D is ready) they will get a C2D.

Anyway, what am I trying to say? When Apple announces C2D they will probably be selling as many or more C2D machines than Dell. Maybe, I don't really know the number, this is just speculation.

My prediction: the computer that Steve uses to introduce the new iTunes movie store will have Core 2. Will it be a iMac or MacBook Pro or...?

I think the last 3 events he's done were on an iMac. I doubt he'll use a Macbook pro. My guess he'll be using a 23" iMac that already has the Airport whatever streaming the video amazingly to london.

Just think if that Data Center Apple bought was acctually a place to store alll the studios movies. Then you pay 9.99 for the rights to what ever movie and it is streamed Slingbox style to your Airport Extreme that has HDMI, Component, Composite etc outlets for your TV. Then you have your movie you bough anytime all the time but never have to take storage of your own, and never have to deal with downloading or anything.

You heard it first!

GPU, the current one is old and underclocked...what could be better? Heres my deal, I want one really bad its killing me...but I know theres a new one around the corner and I need to wait for it. Theres no effing chance in hell I'd dish out $2,299 for a brand new laptop that is going to be replaced by a new faster one in about a month. I just don't roll like that. Apple, if you can here me, please update the MBPs. I'll never leave you if you do. If you don't I'll hate you and buy a Mac anyhow because they're sexy. Probably an iMac. An expensive one.
