That may sound hyperbolic, but in terms of general performance and lag, it is easily the worst OS I have ever used, it's consistently awful on my 3 mac os computers: retina macbook pro, hackintosh desktop, and a 2012 12-core Mac Pro.

How does Apple get away with this? Are the software engineers at Apple this incompetent? It's a hilariously awful OS, and the slowest I have ever used.

Not sure what kind of response you are expecting. Obviously many here will disagree, including myself. Yosemite (and El Cap) runs really well on my wife's 2007 iMac, and absolutely flies on my late 2013 iMac i7. I wonder how many other OSes you have actually used! There are bad systems out there, i am not convinced OS X 10.10 is one of them.
Define "lag".

I've got a late 2011 macbook pro, i7 with 16Gb ram, it runs better now than in 10.9, all very smooth with no issues.

The look really does grow on you, it is nicer than the last version

On my two Mac Pros (including a 2012 like the one you mentioned) Yosemite has been running flawlessly despite a few issues at the beginning, which were more related to the UI than anything else. It's stable, fast, there's no lag, even on my 2006 machine.

What kind of discussion are you expecting with a post like this by the way? Giving no other information than "it sucks" and "general performance" is pretty vague... Oh well.. El Capitan is just around the corner so we'll have the uptaded version of these threads as well!

I actually agree with OP sadly! I just bought the rMBP 13", and I know it doesn't have an i7 or anything but the OS should not lag like this! Literally everything with a UI animation lags basically, it's depressing. I run W10 on my main desktop which only has an i5-2400S (and an SSD) in it and it's blazingly smooth. I love Yosemite's look and feel but the skipped frames really bug me this shouldn't happen with a modern computer fresh out of the box. I run my retina display at 1440x900 and occasionally 1680x1050 (use Retina Display Manager to switch on the fly) and they both lag. Not only do those resolutions lag but 1280x800 sees some occasional frame drop as well. This is with reduced transparency disabled of course, so as the OS was intended to run.

The things I most notice drop frames is NC (always), while scrolling at top or bottom of Finder when things are displayed as icons (happens in Desktop & Screen Saver as well with the pictures). The button to return to System Preferences has dropped frames when clicked, resizing Safari (kinda ok with this one but it's horrible when watching a video like YouTube), the green button (maximize?) occasionally, the gesture based things (Launchpad, the double screen view thing, etc) skips some. I know it may seem like I'm nit-picking but it's just something I wouldn't expect to happen on a new computer, yes if it was a few years old though I could understand.

Is there anything I can do to fix this other than turning on reduced transparency and whatnot? I've never really used prior OS X versions but watching and using the little I did it was always buttery-smooth until Yosemite. I feel they just have too much blur with the OS that isn't optimized well enough and they're just saving to fix it for El Capitan cause I've read that the lag is apparently fixed in El Cap but I haven't tested it. I might try dual-booting El Cap and testing it...

I have Yosemite 10.10.5 running on a 2008 iMac, a 2013 13" rMBP, and a 2013 MBA. I have had zero problems.

Same here. I'm running a Late 2014 base Mac Mini, which I'm told is so slow it goes back in time, but Yosemite is running just fine (and I find the system loads better than, say, my old Windows 7 machine, and slightly better than Windows 10 which runs on my year old work laptop). I wonder if you've weird stuff in your settings, or...what? What exactly is wrong?

I agree 100%!

I have tested Yosemite on old iMac and Mac Mini 2014, iMac was unbearable slow and I returned to Mavericks. Yosemite works a bit better on Mac Mini but its still buggy!

Latest 10.10.5 is a bit better but it most of the annoying bugs are still present, some examples: unreliable USB connections, Software Update is unreliable, Finder is complete mess and I doubt Apple tested Yosemite on a hard drive because it is unbelievable slow! On external SSD its fast but all bugs are present.

To add insult into injury Time Machine has been more problematic than before, I am not certain its because of Yosemite but given the number of other issues I wouldn't be surprised...

Sure blame me. Nope, it lagged out of the box the minute I turned it on after buying it. The only thing I did was update to 10.10.4 and rebooted.

You didn't say on a new system with Yosemite. You stated its awful on 3 macs as well. Something you did I bet. If it works for me and many others what are the chances it wouldn't work for you ? Something you have on the system ? Did you do a new fresh install without other junk with it that you had laying around ? Etc

To answer the question in your subject line, no. Vista was a train wreck and 8.x isn't far behind. 10 blowing away my ability to connect to wireless networks speaks for itself.

I'm running Yosemite on an '08 vintage Core 2 Duo MBP and other than the slow but livable boot time, it is totally fine. On my mid 2015 rMBP it flies.

I have a few dozen Macs in my small company, and I use 3 regularly depending on where I'm working that day/week - a 2009 iMac and 2012 Mini Server (both i7 with spinners) and a late-2013 rMBP. I also need to log into other Macs if I'm at one of our remote sites, some with spinners and some with SSDs. All are running 10.10.5, and my Mini Server and rMBP have partitions with 10.11 running.

I have no issues (and the same goes with my 25+ employees on Macs) with lag or slowness on any of our Macs. Logging out/in, Creative Cloud, graphics apps (Mac CC apps or AutoDesk apps in virtualized Windows VMs), web browsers - no app or group of apps tends to cause a lag or slowness. I've used solid ISP connections and much-slower LTE connections with no difference in OS operations - my home office Comcast ISP has sucked for 5 days but I had no lag with my Mini Server and rMBP over my LTE connection (personal hotspot via my iPad Air). I think I have a hunch of how to "fix" this but haven't had time to write it up so that I have to deal with flamers and whiners - soon, though...

BTW, I'm not "watching" this thread - it's too similar to dozens/hundreds of others just like it...

I have done many fresh installs. Most recently, I did one on the 2012 Mac Pro. Firefox and FCPX run like a**, and the general lag moving around is there too.

E-Mails? I don't get any e-mails telling me to upgrade or update. I haven't seen anything that isn't running great on my (2) 2015 13" retina MacBook Pros running 10.10.4 and now running 10.10.5. Wifi and Bluetooth both have been solid for me. If the problem was really that bad I would certainly notice.

It seems that you are running FC (Final cut pro). Are you running this on all of your macs? Are you running the latest version of FCP? Since this is a video editing program, and my Macs asks for pro program (Logic and FCP) updates and occasionally a ROM update separately from the normal updates, perhaps this is the problem. Also the Ram requirements are larger for these programs and a stock retina laptop would have to be special ordered with 8 gigs of ram and the best video configuration for running large file edits/creation. Perhaps memory clean (a great app) which frees Ram memory when using huge files and switching to other application would help. Also some programs hog system resources so I run a dedicated machine for these demanding programs. So check your Ram check your video specs and compare them to the program requirements.
Good luck and hope this helps.

Well I did at least. You all who aren't experiencing problems are jumping to conclusions and acting as if it has to be the owners fault if their system has an issue and yours does not. I know you could have been just responding to him but I'm just saying.

The lag I'm experiencing isn't making the OS unusable in any sense of the word. It's the fluidity of the OS that's having issues which creates for a bad user experience. I say this as my desktop Windows 10 PC I'm currently typing on was an update from W8 and all my files and programs were saved and I have no problems, and I get that's Windows and this is OS X and there's differences. The UI FPS (bolded to make sure everyone understands the issues I'm having) drops when doing the stuff I mentioned in my first post happens not only on my clean Yosemite (fresh out of the box brand new computer never been used) has had frame drops. Though on 10.10.5 there was a minor improvement I noticed but it could have coincided with me disabling FileVault 2 (though the decryption wasn't done because I didn't plug in power cord and haven't tested since so maybe FV2 was the issue). I could always record a video and put it on YouTube and do another fresh install if you guys would want.

This same lag I'm experiencing has documented YouTube videos of, and that I replicated in the store the day of buying my computer. So yes I bought this full knowing it could horribly lag but I have high hopes it'll be resolved with El Capitan. I truly feel it has to do with poor optimization with the retina screen with all the new UI blurs and features, like how iOS 7 was a laggy pile of crap at the beginning (for me at least on my old 4S).

If you guys have any other ideas what could cause the UI lag I could try turning off, let me know and I'll happily try it out!

I do not know how Yosemite compares previous incarnations. I am new to Mac. Overall my experience has been far less than stellar. In fact it was so bad I was only moments away from removing OS-X altogether (in favor of Linux)! That being said, the biggest problems seem to have gone since 10.10.5. I will hesitate to consider moving forward with 10.11.x simply because I do not want to repeat my previous experience.

Can't say I agree. I'm running Yosemite on a live audio production iMac and if there was an actual reason it would have to run smoothly and quickly it would be on that type of computer. It's runs flawlessly* since I upgraded it. Haven't had a problem during a live event yet. However, it isn't a Retina display so maybe there are driver issues with those?

*I know "flawlessly" gets overused but it literally hasn't had one problem yet. It works better than it ever did on Mavericks.

Same as well but I'd say upgrade to El Cap as soon as it's released because all the Beta versions look stellar in comparison to Yosemite. But you're right 10.10.5 fixed some stuff thankfully.

Right, and nearly everyone else who says they're having a flawless experience (besides a few in this thread) don't have retina screens and they fail to notice this!

Even Chris Pirillo talked about it in his 7 things he dislikes about the 2015 15" rMBP, the first thing on his list was UI lag and he complained exactly as I did! It amazes me Apple is getting away with this because only some people are having this issue. I could understand with the first couple of Yosemite updates but we've had 5 and the improvements in the UI fluidity has barely made an improvement...
