I currently use DayOne Journal in split screen with my Bible app on my mini 5 - I am really hoping it gives me just a bit more space in landscape mode....

I also plan on trying to use Procreate with it when I am about and out. I currently only draw on my 12.9" iPP....

GoodNotes - I’m a heavy user on my 12.9IPP but want something a little more portable when I’m in meetings and it’s pure note taking. Being able to share the same pencil across both devices will be nice.
Annotating PDFs can stay on the big one.
I’m just hoping ESR bring out their paper-feel protectors soon (I’ve emailed them) as I really like it (and I can’t effectively use the pencil on the bare screen).

Not to be boring, but I’m really looking forward to using reading-heavy apps like Kindle, Reddit, and certain websites like ao3. I’ve been reading almost exclusively on my phone for years, so it’ll be nice to read with a better aspect ratio.

I haven’t used an ipad since the mini 3 back in 2015-16, so I’ll have to discover what other apps I want to use.

I like that idea, journaling based on the inspiration you see/read in the split-screen!

I LOVE Procreate. Admittedly, I have not dived in as much as I should. I've got a handful of quality doodles to my name. But, I did use it to design a book jacket for someone once. I took it to 99% in Procreate and finished it in PS & AI. So, I know the power and my ability to use at least small portion of the app's power is there.

(I really think the thing keeping me from using Procreate the most is how cumbersome my 2016 12.9" iPad pro feels to me as an everyday device. The overall size and weight have kept it in my bag a lot more than I thought it would be. The size and weight give it this nagging "high maintenance" feeling. It has been useful, it just doesn't fit in with the way I want to use such a device.)
I think having the pencil attached to the Mini 6, as it is on the latest Pros, is going to make a big difference in convenience for me. Finding pencil 1 (or just taking it out of the sleeve) and making sure it’s charged are annoyances. It seems petty or picky, but I think it will be something that has a more positive effect than one might think.

I should clarify a bit. I'm looking forward to using the Mini 6 not because the screen is smaller, but because the device is smaller. I've got more inches of screen in my life than I can use in a day. 90% of the time I'm on a 27" iMac. The OG iPad 12.9 pro is quite often too big to be quick and convenient. Its features don't bring anything to the table (lately) that stop me from reaching for my MBP for first. The camera is worthless, the microphone is less than worthless. It's still a great device for some things. It's just going to live on my desk moving forward. The Mini is going to live in my hand.

Same thoughts I have. The 12.9 just sits there. If I want to do something like editing or anything serious, I’ll go with a real laptop, my M1 15” MBP.

So I’m considering selling it for the new mini as that’s something I think I’ll be more likely to reach for for content consumption in the couch or in the go.

I'm just glad I will not have to deal with that little cap anymore. And I can't count the times I've wanted to use it and it's been dead. I'd rather wear a cereal box as a hat than walk around carrying a 12 inch iPad with an Apple Pencil sticking out of it.
I have a tether on the cap of my pencil 1 and I use an adapter so I can charge it with a cable, but it’s still not convenient. Your comment about the cereal box hat cracks me up.

Yes to reading. 90% of my screen-time reading happens on my phone, and it's just feeling a bit cramped. I've tried to settle into a magazine sitting on the couch with my iPad Pro, and as an e-magazine experience News+ is nice... the big iPad just doesn't go anywhere very well. Little things, like getting up to get more coffee, sure I could set the iPad down, but I'd rather be able to putter around the house and read/watch. If you try to stand up with the 2016 iPad pro, from a couch-seated position, you have to do one of those back-forth rocks to get some momentum going. On ab day I put it on my chest while I do crunches... I'm just kidding. There's no ab day.

So, back to your point. I'm looking forward to taking more and better advantage of News+ content.
Same, same. I end up reading a lot, even if it's just social media posts (incl. this forum). I used to read books more often on my old mini, but it's so slow and I hate the lack of dark mode. Even if I can read in dark mode in kindle/books/safari, the overall light mode strains my eyes because I do the majority of my reading at night.

So when really motivated, I would have no choice but to read novels on my tiny phone screen and consequently I've stopped reading actual books. It's a little easier to read fanfiction on the phone because most of it is short, but it's still less than ideal. The mini will be a real boon for both regular novel reading + the occasional manga/comic, and highlighting/taking notes on technical books.

But I've heard people say that for reading actual full-size magazines, a bigger ipad is better, which makes sense to me though I'm not much of a magazine reader. I've gone into the apple store a few times to check out the bigger ipads and always found them... too big. If I wanted it, I could've gotten an air or refurbished 2020 ipad pro already, but I opted to wait for the refreshed mini.

Also, I didn't even get into the gaming aspect! I have phases of playing games on my iphone, and most of what I play works best in the iphone format eg. simple puzzle/idle games where being able to reach across the whole screen with one hand is important. I've felt discouraged from playing more graphically intensive games with complicated controls eg. PUBG, Genshin Impact, etc because there's too much going on and I can't see the action well enough on a small phone screen.

Hopefully this will get updated quickly but goodnotes doesnt think the mini fully supports the pencil. Stylus and palm rejection settings are missing. First app I installed, loving the form factor so far!

That was one of the first things I tried as well. The form factor really is great for a digital notebook set up but not having it recognize the pencil is frustrating. The GoodNotes team is good though so I expect a fix fairly soon.
