But we all know they never will do it with the apple tax, so just give me the neutered version!
Just as well give it up and by a Roku 4, Apple tv has itunes, Roku has everything else.

You can say the same thing for the iOS app. Yet they've still done it, and I'm still paying yearly for my prime membership...Amazon doesn't want to do that. A neutered version on your ATV means you'll watch your Prime content in the neutered app and conveniently go to Apple for all your purchased or rented content. For Amazon, Prime content is like a loss-leader. Doesn't make much sense for Amazon to take the loss just to lead their customers straight to Apple.

1. You are overlooking that they have implemented the best AirPlay (with x-ray) of any other App (at least that I use). So, they are well aware of the fact people want to play Amazon content on the Big TV and they allow/encourage it via AirPlay. Using your logic that people will simply buy a second box Amazon could simply disable the AirPlay feature or never create it in the first place. Others have done that. But no, they spent a lot of time and effort on making AirPlay a very useful feature of their iOS App.You could say that, but you'd be missing the point that watching on the big TV in the den is a different and much bigger ballgame than watching on a phone or tablet. The revenue potential for content coming out of the TV has a lot more zeros just to the left of the decimal point. Amazon will shrug off this issue and offer a neutered iOS app because there's less money at stake, and it keeps a presence on your phone. Plus they know nobody's going to supplement their iPhone with an Android phone just to get to an Amazon video app. People will, however, use both an Apple TV box and a Roku box, or a Blu Ray with streaming video, or a 'smart TV' with an Amazon app already built-in. So there's a lot more money at stake, and very little reason to just roll with it and take the loss.
