It's funny to hear people balk about how expensive this is. Top of the line mac starting at 3 grand. Adjusted for inflation, I'll bet this Pro starts about the same price as an original 128k. In the 80's and 90's, I had much more expensive systems just to do desktop publishing, which then I was considered a "power user." You can do incredibly so much more on every system sold. The processing power in today's computers hardly get taxed by most users. What other industry can you name that has exponentially increased performance, yet continually charged a lesser and lesser amount? As much as people say Apple gouges, they don't gouge nearly as much as they used to. At a base price of 3 grand, this is extremely competitive.
I don't need the processing power, or I would jump on it. A lot of geezers like me who don't need the processing power won't balk at getting an entry level Pro made in America for 3 grand. The market they lose on people needing slots will be made up by the apple faithful who wouldn't consider the old large Pro. Hopefully an increased market will encourage them to keep it current. The largest problem Pro users have with the new Pro is size which will be the same reason they will sell so many more of them, and thus creating a reason to keep them current, aiding the Pro users in the longterm. Someone will make an TB2 expansion box for those that need it, however, they'll even have to wait longer and spend more.
When you can pick them up used for the price of an iMac, I'd definitely consider it. By then, 4k monitors will be reasonable as well.
Rumors of release in Germany on 12/16 and press release of availability in France 12/18, so I'm guessing it will be Tuesday the 17th. I can't wait to get my TBD, 5x the desktop space of my 13" Air.
