I also agree with the profiles. If I want "My Humps" to be my "at home" ringtone, and the built-in "old phone" to be my "business" ringtone, each at different volume levels, and possibly with or without vibration, I want to be able to make all those changes with a simple push of an icon, rather than the PITA method we currently have.

Push of an icon? We don't even need that. The phone has GPS built into it. No reason it cannot go into "business mode" when you park your car at work in the morning and return to your home life mode afterwards. A lot of this stuff could be done automatically with different rules for weekends or different times, etc.

Hey OP I like you post. I’m glad this post so far has not turned into a flame fest.
I am not sure what kind of business user you are referring to.

If you are referring to the casual business owner who has no IT department to answer (which for me doesn’t count) or a business that does not care what goes on it’s network and allows any and everything, then these simple changes are good.

However if you are talking about corporate businesses that have large and restrictive IT departments, corporations that have to worry about litigation and such, corporations who do not allow personally owned devices on their network, then those changes are not enough and are the least of thing things the iPhone needs for corps.

I think the next itineration of the iPhone will address a lot of the things you mentioned.

Great point! I'd love to have automatic profile switching based on location, or even on preset schedules.

I never even though about the IT control part. That is an entire another boat load of problems and would require a massive change to the underline system of the iPhone.

I was thinking just on the interface and user side. Many of the things I listed are problem I have seen listed here on the boards from personal use of the phone. Notifications, profiles and the lack of a real spell checker. All those are need in business.

the lack of a real spell checker.
Idk... The reason I say this is because even a 'real' spell checker will miss stuff like it's v its or there v their. So you are still going to need to reread the message anyways, if you actually care about spelling that is. In which case you would find what the spell checker says is wrong anyways.

Now if you are upset about not knowing how to spell a word, well you have safari for that. Google is one of the best spell checkers out there.

problem with that argument isit is really inconvenient and not users friendly (anti apple) to do it. Unless it is just a quick text I am popping off then all I care about is a quick glance at spelling I always do a proof read before I send things off looking for my more common grammar mistakes makes sure it is right. There/Their is one of them. The other one for me is contraction like I am and it is.

As for things like There vs their. Well there are relatively few words that you have to worry about that happening with and most messages will not have any of them.

Profile Issue

"Now, the profiling argument may be valid, but I don't think it's sound. If the phone should be both personal and work oriented, then why aren't the volume and vibration options enough to adapt to where you are? On the other hand, if the phone is meant to be business oriented, why is "My Humps" (or anything like it) a ringtone at all? I'm not trying to be glib, OP, I just think you're being a little fussy. "

I just switched from the blackberry to the iPhone 3gs The profile is the biggest thing I miss. I travel alot and it stinks when Im on the west coast in a hotel and my coworkers on the east coast forget Im on the west coast and call me at 6 am est. I leave the phone on when sleeping in case my wife needs to reach me. with the Blackeberry I was able to silence the phone with the exception of my home number and my wifes cell number. I really miss that feature. Also miss the blinking light on the phone when there is a message/email.

I dont understand the jailbreak thing but wonder if jailbreaking would be a solution?

I enjoyed this thread

I think Blackberry is the only phone that allows more the one Exchange account. And even then I think it the accounts still need to be under the same Exchange Organization. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I do know that Windows Mobile can't do it. I remember somebody tried to hack it so it could, but it had major conflicts.

Droid does. But yea, supporting more than one Exchange account would be a big step forward.

Searchable email

Just saw a note that there's a new JB app to add a second Exchange account.

What I'd like is searchable, sortable email that's persistent on the phone.

Try this

+1 This strikes me as the simplest to implement business-friendly enhancement. I agree with most of the others here too, but this one is a glaring omission.

I use this and it really is outstanding.

Just remember when you are composing an email; hit the home button- open up the app to select your sig, then re-open mail.

Works great and you can customize to the max, including photos.

- and no I do not work for or represent them in any way-
