same goes for iOS users, who love the screen size and the better internals but yet do not switch due to Android OS.
Personally, for me to switch to android, they would have to have an email app similar to iOS and also an integrated Message system like iMessage and integrated video like Facetime. It would also have to be a high quality display like the retina display and also have a long lasting battery and of course be as fluid as iOS.
How about you?

There are lot of apps like iMessages and FaceTime that work across multiple platforms, but many require signing up separately which some folks I know are relunctant to do. Email on iOS usable, but nothing to write home about. I mean the Android mail app looks and feels about the same and isn't that spectacular either.

For usability, the "Retina" display isn't that special anymore. There are many phones with higher resolution displays than the iPhone now, and the battery life is starting to catch up. As wit iOS being fluid... it's only fluid if your phone is one of the newer models; my older iPhones are not fluid at all, but this is all expected.

All that said, I just sold and lost two iPhones... which gives a good opportunity to get used to not using iOS for a while (at least on the phone level).

A user accessible part of the file system so I can store my files as I do on the computer

be able to make other apps the default

make things more cross platform (ie, iBooks only works on iOS, Maps only works on iOS)

Previously I used a iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S and 5 but nothing you mention above or currently incorporated on the iPhone tempts me back after using Android for the last 9 months. :)

These. The files should also be possible to try to open in any app or alternatively have apps be able to set themselves as file handlers for filetypes.

I'd also like quick toggles in the notification dropdown. This has been shown to work fine and integrate with the "Apple experience" in NCSettings.

Notifications, when dismissed, should also be dismissed in the application. It's silly that I have to open the app to get rid of the badge notifications.

Also no limitations for alternative apps. For example now anything that uses Javascript and isn't Safari gets its performance totally crippled unless you whitelist the apps via jailbreak and Nitrous.

I think they should continue improving Siri, allow us to set apps as defaults, tweak the Notification Center, and just basically refine all the apps and services they have now. iCloud needs work.

For Android, I would need better app quality and a more polished experience. There are so many apps I enjoy that are exclusive to iOS, and the whole thing feels far more cohesive, prettier, and polished more than my (admittedly brief) experiences with Android phones.

Google Now, Chat Heads, and larger screens might persuade me though...

Allowing users to pick what they want for default apps. At work we use all google products, so having the option to make certain things default would be key for me. Personally, as long as I stay with my current employer I will be using an android phone.

Everything keeping you with iOS has an alternative that's similar or better on Android (better in certain aspects worse in others just depends on preference).

I stick with an iPhone because I don't want options. I've had my fill with Android and I liked it but I was none stop changing and customizing things and felt like it was never perfect. Then rooting and romming, I spent way too much of my time messing with that.

Yeah, I'm pretty shallow lol

THIS!

They'd also need to introduce a way to customize the look of your springboard and lock screen with widgets, quick toggles, shortcuts on the lock screen, etc.

*EDIT* They'd also need to open up the App store and allow things like alternative keyboards and, um, other stuff(I'm still pretty new to Android...)

Tim Cook stated in a recent interview that at some point they would be allowing this. I think they are really feeling the pressure.

Bigger screen, much better multitasking, file system, default apps, better notifications, and please for the love of god let me do whatever I want with my phone instead of having to bend over to apples wishes.

Most of the things already mentioned would be a must (setting default apps being the biggest one of those), but the biggest one of all is the screen size. Now that I've used everything from the S3 to One to Note 2, I just can't go back to my iPhone 5. It feels TINY and I find that typing on the keyboard is painful.

If Apple wants me back, they've gotta open things up a bit, but the biggest thing they have to do is increase the size of the screen (or at least offer the choice of a bigger screen for those that want them).

First thing is the phone running IOS...I want at least 4.5 to 5 inch screen.
These are in no special order...

1) Notification light. My S4 blinks when I have a text or email or missed call. I can tell just from looking at my S4 if i have a message or email.
2) Widgets. Want to be able to see the weather forecast for the next 5 days without having to open the app. Weather widgets is just one...there are too many to list. Widgets on my wake screen
3) Block people from calling or texting.
5) The ability to add themes or a launcher (Nova) to change my icons or arrange my screens. No jailbreak should be needed just to do this.....
More to come after my second cup of coffee! :)

You just described me about a year ago....tweaking my S3 and trying EVERY rom available..recovering from soft bricks and so on and so on......
But then I got tired of it and stopped. I have my S4 and will not root it or flash a rom unless it provides something truly mind-blowing......
flashing roms is a sickness! :)

When iOS acts more like OS X in philosophy and the best and most seamless way to use an iPhone is not having to follow Apple's iTunes/iCloud chains.

Which seems like probably never.

(And yes i do use a jailbroken iPhone 5 right now, but itching to grab an android device soon).

if Apple would release an OS X/iPad type device, I would be all over it. I prefer a full fledged computing experience on tablet so that rules out Android and ios. Might consider getting the Surface RT if i could ever get past those awful live tiles.

I created a thread that posed the same question before: What Would Make You Return to the iPhone?

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1501886/

Here's what I wrote:

Hardware

-I don't think I can accept anything smaller than a 4.3" screen. I think anywhere between 4.3-4.6 is the sweet spot, for me. Needless to say, it needs to get wider too.

-I think I would need Apple to finally go with a capacitive or an on-screen home button. I've been spoiled by the Nexus experience, and to some degree it's laboring to have to depress the home button now. Plus, it just feels antiquated. Something about the digital button versus the analog button is more futuristic. I'd feel like I'd be taking a step back. I don't want to have to deal with convincing Apple Geniuses that my home button is acting up (I've been turned away before because I couldn't replicate the issue at the time of my meeting). It'd be nice to move past these little frustrations.

-Depending on how they manage the 4.3" screen, whether they actually enlarge the device to some degree or use up less bezel, I may or may not require the sleep/wake button to be on the side. As devices get larger, putting it on the top is becoming a no-no. The HTC One X, for example, is horridly cumbersome to wake and put to sleep. For those worried about accidentally hitting the volume buttons, I really think people can learn to adjust. Also, you can offset the positions by putting the sleep button higher (like it is on the Nexus 4; it's a little too high, actually) on the right side. Again, this isn't necessarily a deal breaker if they don't, but it'll depend on how they manage that 4.3" screen.

-Notification light. The benefits of this puppy is enormous. They could design it so that it's part of the aesthetics of the iPhone. Make the home button (or at least the square app shape on the home button) be the light. Imagine the home button (or again, the square shape) glowing! That would be beautiful.

That's really all hardware-wise. I don't think these are extreme requirements, especially the ~4.3" screen.

Software

-First and foremost, for the love of god, update the iOS keyboard. It's in desperate need of upgrading. It's been years. It's time. Give us upper and lower case signifiers, give us control over our own dictionary (please!), give us some sort of suggestion bar (Blackberry came up with their own way, why can't Apple?), give us long-presses for secondary symbols, improve the autocorrection, let us change the size of the keyboard (again, this doesn't have to be complicated. You can model it after Swiftkey, which simply offers: "Small, Medium, Large." Not difficult!). The keyboard experience was one of the main reasons I was driven away from the iPhone. It would do wonders in bringing me back if they make the right and necessary improvements.

-I want to see easier access to settings. Do we need widgets? Not necessarily. I've always said, most widgets are overrated, but the little more simpler widgets... they go a long way! Things like toggles, or quick access to settings. Apple could so easily implement this, that it's baffling they haven't yet. I'm talking about easy access to switching sound profiles, switching the lock screen on/off (I shouldn't need to input my lock screen code every single time I need to use my phone at home), switching WiFi/GPS/Bluetooth, etc. Again, these aren't insane requests. Just make things a bit more accessible. I'm sure Apple can find a way with or without widgets.

-Dynamic icons. Similar vein, these don't have to become full blown widgets. It'd be nice to see an accurate weather reading on the weather icon (this is the example used the most). At this point and time, I don't see why I'd trade the dynamics of home screens for an app drawer.

-Improved notification center and status bar. I still dislike the banner drop down. Why can't Apple utilize the space in the status bar? I don't mean copy Android with a little icon, I mean, why can't the banner simply roll onto the status bar area? Yes, it'll be smaller, but the point is to just alert the user. Why not remove the carrier sign (or in the case of the iPad Wifi, the "iPad" sign -- why do I need this there?) on the upper left? That space could be put to better use for notifications, etc. Also, please allow us to swipe away single notifications, which is a very simple request.

-Going to add upgrades to Mail and Safari. Would need to see full threaded messages in Mail. Would love to see my entire mailbox, too, ready at my finger tips (every time I load up my "Sent" mailbox, it has to actually load it. With Gmail, it's already preloaded). Give me more than 3 weeks worth of old mail, too. Safari could use more tabs. OR allow us to set default Mail/Browser apps.

-Allow for more sharing through other apps. Yes, people use things other than Facebook and Instagram and Twitter.

I've run out of steam, but I think there are a few more things that I'd need Apple to change before I return. I'll edit as they come to me. Please add yours!

I'm also going to throw a curveball. This is neither here nor there, but I'll mention it anyway...

Philosophy

I'd like to see Apple adopt a more humbling approach to their keynotes and presentations. A lot of it is condescending or disingenuous. We live in a fact-checking world, and making claims that they offer the world's thinnest phone or trying to insinuate that one handed use is foolish beyond anything 4" just won't cut it anymore. Millions of S3 owners can attest to somehow surviving with a much larger phone, as can others.

It'd be nice if they brought down their unlocked phone prices, too. Yes, yes, they need the profit for all that R&D, but don't forget they're also somehow sitting on a bank with reserves over $100 billion dollars...

There are probably other little things too... like stop withholding main features in software updates (iPhone 4 and SIRI)... or touting Beta programs as the main features... or holding true to incremental upgrades. Why play the slow game? This ties into being overly concerned with profit margins. Give us the specs people want.

I'd return in a heartbeat if Apple can hit these points.

Can't believe the iPhone doesn't have a notification light! That alone is a reason for me not to get an iPhone. Besides that, the option of using widgets. And yes, they are useful! ;)

It might be copying Android, but an app drawer of some sort. I don't need every app at my disposal. That's what I like about Android, I have the app drawer with all my apps and widgets if I need them, but I can choose what I want on the home screens. Avoids clutter.

Having a 'sexy phone' doesn't cut it if the OS isn't up to par for what I need it for.

I think WWDC will either be an epic win or epic fail for iOS...at least for those who don't turn the blind eye on :apple:

This makes it sound like you returning is in the realm of possibility. Not with those demands. Granted, I agree with most of them, but they are very unrealistic and subjective.

1. Unrealistic? Yes, knowing Apple, they are. We won't see even one-tenth of that list to be realized... wi-fi / BT widgets and settable default apps maybe, but I bet nothing else. Which means Android, WP and BB will continue to getting considerably better, more flexible etc. than iOS.

2. Subjective? yes, screen size MIGHT be a subjective thing to some. Nevertheless, I've handled the S4 and found it excellently usable with one hand (I'm male with medium-sized hands). I just don't see why Apple couldn't provide us with even a 5" model.

The rest of the list is objective. Like file sharing. It'd be GREAT to have user-definable symlinks built into the OS to share huge media files between third-party apps (see https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1464236/ for more info), for example. The current method of file sharing between apps (with the 200 Mbyte limit) is plain pathetic.

Unrealistic? Others can do it. Why can't Apple? Again, look to the "Philosophy" portion of my post.

- bigger screen (4.3+)
- 1080p display
- cross-platform iMessage (if BBM can come to iOS and Android, Apple has no excuse to keep it exclusive)
- iOS overhaul
- widgets
- more customizability
- improved BT stack (I can sync my text messages/emails/calender to my car with my Androids, but Apple doesn't have that functionality)
- less ridiculous walls on everything (you need to plug an iOS device in to use Entune apps on Toyo/Lexus products, whereas Androids can just use BT)
