You just described me about a year ago....tweaking my S3 and trying EVERY rom available..recovering from soft bricks and so on and so on......
But then I got tired of it and stopped. I have my S4 and will not root it or flash a rom unless it provides something truly mind-blowing......
flashing roms is a sickness! :)

Did the same with my S3. I especially liked playing around with the hybrid roms and putting the UI on tablet mode. I haven't even rooted my S4 yet. I guess I'm in one of those "I've seen it all" moments.

The only thing I miss is Google Wallet, but I can live without it as I only used it at gas stations and occasional trips to Rite Aid.

First thing is the phone running IOS...I want at least 4.5 to 5 inch screen.
These are in no special order...

1) Notification light. My S4 blinks when I have a text or email or missed call. I can tell just from looking at my S4 if i have a message or email.
2) Widgets. Want to be able to see the weather forecast for the next 5 days without having to open the app. Weather widgets is just one...there are too many to list. Widgets on my wake screen
3) Block people from calling or texting.
5) The ability to add themes or a launcher (Nova) to change my icons or arrange my screens. No jailbreak should be needed just to do this.....
More to come after my second cup of coffee! :)

Notification light is/was cool when I had Android, but after switching to iPhone I got use to not having it. I think the idea of having the home button light up especially if the light color was customizable would be cool but I think that ultimately is contributes to battery drain which may be the reason Apple doesn't include it.

Widgets are overrated to some degree. The only widgets worth mentioning are weather and settings IMHO. Wanting a weather widget on iPhone is odd because you can easily get to the forecast and such via notification center. If I want a more deep dive review of the weather, then I open up Yahoo Weather (which is one of the best designed apps on iOS hands down). Quick access to some settings would be nice and it has been said that iOS 7 may include this.

Block people from calling or texting would be so damn nice!

If Apple could expand on the Do Not Disturb feature that would be great.

This

It's pathetic how locked down Apple is and how they don't want to give the user any freedom with his/her damn phone.

I want to block calls and I can't even do that with my phone. Totally unacceptable.

Lately, my biggest complaint has been with the mail app. It is so inefficient when using a gmail account through the ios Mail app. Sometimes it's easier to find something by using gmail via Safari. I guess this is why the gmail app exists.

Oh...forgot to add voice control for the camera. My S4 will let me just say "shoot" and it will take the picture...no more touching the screen or buttons to snap a photo.....can concentrate on the shot.

if Apple would release an OS X/iPad type device, I would be all over it. I prefer a full fledged computing experience on tablet so that rules out Android and ios. Might consider getting the Surface RT if i could ever get past those awful live tiles.

Wouldn't you have to get a Surface Pro for full fledge computing experience though?

While there are a lot of things I would like to change, the two biggies are:
1. Larger screen
2. Ditch the walled garden (or at least give the user the option to)

  • Bigger Screen
  • Updated keyboard with swype-like capabilities
  • Choose default apps

Otherwise I am sticking with the S4 and HTC One

if i may ask, which one is better in your opinion? S4 or One?

Out of the box, I would say the HTC One is a much better device. No stuttering, lag, etc and I really like sense. Of course everyone's tastes and needs are different. HOWEVER, if you tweak the settings on the Galaxy S4, install a custom ROM (highly recommend MDOB), use Nova Launcher, and/or disable the samsung and carrier bloat and garbage, then the Galaxy S4 wins hands down.

I know the Samsung build quality doesn't match the HTC One, but if you actually use it instead of paying too much to the aesthetics, the Galaxy S4 fits better in my hands, is lighter, and the .3-inch difference in screen size does make a difference. It also takes better overall photos (but HTC One wins in low-lights) and has better overall performance (after rooting and modding).

If you don't have the patience for all of that, again I recommend the HTC One. Out of the box, the Galaxy S4 was frustrating to use without any tweaking.

Anyway, this is an entirely separate topic in itself!

I've lost faith in iOS, so I won't be coming back. They always bring features years behind. Remember iOS 4 with multitasking, folders, wallpapers, etc.

Everything I want Android already has. All I need now is the Nexus 5.

Will Apple include lockscreen widgets, an accessible file system, open app store to allow apps like launchers or torrent downloading, widgets or toggles, capacitive buttons or on screen buttons, easy sharing between devices with Bluetooth or NFC, offline voice typing, swipe keyboard, user accounts on tablets, bigger screen for iPhone, lower prices, etc?

No, they won't. So we should stop dreaming and move on.

What'll make Android users come back to iOS? If iOS becomes Android. What'll make iOS users switch to Android? If Android becomes iOS. And so it goes...

Adding features to ios (remember, "the world's most advanced mobile operating system") does not mean it has to become android.

It's thinking like this that doesn't help. As if it's somehow hopeless for ios to improve except to just become like android. Android happens to have features and freedoms people like already. That's all. Doesn't mean ios still can't be ios with more features.

It was more to show how narrow-minded both camps are; instead of requesting new features, some people only want the same features on a different platform.

That makes no sense...... If I want IOS to have a feature I currently enjoy on an Android phone then it becomes a new feature on IOS.....
If I want to have a blinking notification light on IOS. IOS doesn't currently have this feature. Isn't that then a NEW feature on IOS? Or are you saying that people should come up with some mind blowing new ideas for each platform or just accept what you have and not request anything new? Then neither platform would ever evolve.

Just saying some people (myself included) dont have the imagination to create an innovative new OS. You look at some people's wishlists and it's like file systems, widgets, the sort of technology that's been around for the better part of a decade. I like to think there's more progress to be made, look at Google Now.

yeah but a wishlist is feature and thing people use their phone for.....
I want widgets on my next iPhone...why not? It doesn't have to be some original never thought of before feature....it is somehting that makes my phone more useful. Just about everthing on your phone has been done before...by other companies....before you bought your phone. So aren't you glad someone ported them to other phones and mobile oerating systems?
Like Wifi....mobile browsers....mobile websites...calendar...reminders....all those arent orginal ideas that came with IOS or Android. They existed before both of those OSes. Thye might not have worked as well but they still existed.
