Between the coasts
Meh . . like I stated before, to each his own. For me it's just another $10/mo with my corporate discount to get an unlimited plan for an iPad on my Verizon account so I just do it and I don't fret over the extra cost since it adds the convenience of not having the device dependent upon any other or having to connect to any WiFi networks other than my own. I'm sure we all can pick on something we perceive as wasteful behavior in someone else . . . spending $10/mo for an iPad data plan is not the only thing I "waste" money on in my life LOL.
Certainly, to each their own. I worry far less about how others spend their money than I care about my own spending.

In a recent post about whether to have a cellular plan on an Apple Watch, I estimated that I only left home without my iPhone about three times in the past year, for about a half-hour each time. Had I been paying $10/month for a Watch cellular plan, that would have worked out to paying $40 for each of those half-hours. Seems even worse when you convert that to $80/hour. But when paid out at $10/month it's certainly painless. It's not so much a matter of "putting things in perspective" as just how you put them in perspective.

Besides, $10/month pales compared to what many of us pay to own/maintain cars. Considering how little mileage I've put on the thing since February 2020, a limo service would have been much cheaper.

Does tethering really kill a iPhone's battery ? Not percent wise of it being discharged, I know that happens, but battery life as aging ?

Imagine if you SAVED $10 a month and put that in a retirement account.

You still won't be able to retire comfortably and you'd be largely dependent on Social Security. You kinda need to sock away at least $1,000 per month for retirement.

Assuming, of course, you live long enough to reach retirement.

And speaking from experience, retirement is great. And yes, sock away as much as you can, especially if you have an employer making any kind of matching contributions to a retirement fund. I was lucky enough to have one who not only did that but also provided a pension (they are no longer so generous to new employees) so I was able to retire early.

I find tethering to be a hassle, and prefer the convenience of having my iPad always connected to the iPad.
