Good point. A company exists to make a profit. Apple could make more profit by being on more carriers. They could be the M$ of iphones, everywhere your turn, iphones.

The only problem with that is :apple: lovers who think they are privileged will start crying about how everybody has an iphone these days.

first: verizon doesn't use SIM cards. I have a friend with them who wants the iPhone to come to Verizon too. he asked customer service the same question and got that very response

second: apple lovers would be glad that it went to Verizon or T-Mobile because then the apple fanboys not on AT&T can have the iPhone too

so ur wrong

Edit: Verizon International Phone History
# Because Verizon is a CDMA carrier, hybrid international phones are a recent addition to Verizon's product line. Before the introduction of these phones, it was not possible to use Verizon phones outside of the United States. By adding tri- and quad-band radios to access different frequencies, Verizon phones became able to connect to other networks. In adding SIM-card functionality, some Verizon phones also gained the ability to connect to non-Verizon networks directly when traveling abroad. But due to technical limitations, some international destinations still do not support Verizon hybrid phones.

Sprint

To be clear am not saying in the US Verizon uses SIM cards.

Now was that so hard?

um, ya that s*** does mean something because he did ask. why would I lie on a website just to prove my point?

That's why the GSM group also knew long ago that they would have to use a CDMA protocol to get 3G, and they did.

I'm sure that you're well aware of this, but for the benefit of others: A carrier does not need to support GSM in order to support iPhones. WCDMA can be deployed without GSM (one of the networks here in NZ is WCDMA-only) and there is no reason that an iPhone can't be used on such a network.

I'm sorry. My statement's meaning was not to infer the truth of your friend. You used your friend as a statement of fact, when in fact it is not. And instead of looking the information up for yourself after two people on this thread said Verizon does have phones with SIM cards, you choose to repeat what your friend's experience was. You cannot live through your friends experiences. Sometimes you have to check things out for yourself.

I doubt Verizon would ever want to go backwards. Engineers knew long ago that CDMA had superior user and speed capacity, along with almost no dropped tower handoffs.

That's why the GSM group also knew long ago that they would have to use a CDMA protocol to get 3G, and they did.

Besides, Verizon is USA only. GSM was created for denser and more numerous European countries, where you also had to support many different carriers.

WiFi had nothing to do with it. Verizon has had WiFi phones for years. But they didn't need to rely on WiFi anywhere near as much as ATT.

Misreporting. Verizon only said they were putting just their own store on as a default. You can still use any other store like before.

Discussions and opinions are great.. but at least base them on facts. Cheers!

Really? Then maybe you would like to explain why Spront sucks so much. Also i live in Vegas and i know many Verizon users that drop calls while im talking on my T-Mobile right next to them. Verizon isnt all that great here but they arent awful either but i know many that have switched to another carrier. Sprint sucks no matter where you are.

I guess it all boils down to where you are standing in the US when you make your call. I just left Sprint, and I was very happy with them, especially the price of their data plan. T-Mobile where I live is a joke, so much so my company had to drop them as a carrier. We deal with the 4 majors, Verizon, ATT, Sprint but no longer T-Mobile. I had T-Mobile just before I went to Sprint and could not wait to get off that contract. T-Mobile in Midtown Manhattan just plain sucked.

considering I was there when he was told that Verizon doesn't have SIM cards, I'm not living through his experience. so Verizon must be hiding some info.

and I know for a fact that Verizon doesn't want their phones to use an app store other than their own, which would kill the fun of having an iPhone

Don't know how it could be hiding, I just posted a link from their own website.

You know for a fact? Are you the CEO or have controlling interest in Verizon? You must not have been around long enough to see companies that have had to backpedal. Go get some Similac cause your starting to sound like a whinny little kid.

I'veve seen and heard many times from Verizon that they won't so ya it's a fact

and how am I a whiny kid? the iPhone could go to Verizon and I wouldn't care. all I'm saying is that it won't

Well, I thought it went without saying that when we're directly comparing two protocols, that we assume everything else is equal: towers, users, etc.

Yes, of course there are places where one carrier has more towers than another. But that's a test of the carriers, not the technology itself.

and I know for a fact that Verizon doesn't want their phones to use an app store other than their own, which would kill the fun of having an iPhone

You probably read one of those typically overdramatic articles about Verizon only putting on their own app store.

But you ignored the followup articles pointing out that Verizon doesn't stop anyone from using any other app store as well.

The idea that there should only be one store at all, is an Apple idea.

Good, because it's pretty silly to argue about the future. No one knows what's really going to happen. You guys can argue until the cows come home.

I'm also glad a mod made a post. Always seems to calm things down. :)

No offense, but sometimes you don't need to comment, especially when it does not concern you.:)

VZW iPhone

I would just like to point out to all of you people who don't think there is even a sliver of a chance at a Verizon iPhone there are a few key things that may make Apple change their stance on Verizon and many people are over looking:

1. 87 million subscribers (makes investing in CDMA sound worth it to me)
2. AT&T has a weak network (not saying VZW is better)
3. Apple likes to do the unexpected
4. LTE is many years away from full deployment, CDMA is still viable
5. Blackberry runs their own app store while being on Verizon as well

So, for people to completely shoot this idea down makes me laugh, but I don't necessarily believe it either since we've been hearing it since the release of the device. Just some food for thought, but i feel the recent rumors have been much more substantiated than rumors before......

Supposedly sometime late next summer the exclusive agreement is supposed to be up for renewal.

So I guess anything could happen?

:D

Anything is possible, but I honestly don't think CDMA is very viable. I mean, where else in the world is CDMA used? I'd wait until LTE becomes widespread if I were Jobs.

Korea approved iPhone

As reported in the WSJ and other places, South Korea has just approved iPhone for their market even though Apple is maintaining a no comment.

Korea is interesting in that it is one of the very few countries (Japan is the other) that uses CDMA instead of GSM.

Current iPhone has GSM/EDGE/UMTS-WCDMA (Edge is 2.5G while WCDMA is 3G for the GSM world) technologies operating on a bunch of different frequency bands. That would not work for Korea. What is needed is a new iPhone that has CDMA/CDMA2000 (CDMA2000 is 3G for the CDMA world).

Which is also what will be needed for Verizon. So when they started selling iPhone in Korea (and Japan), the chance for Verizon also offering iPhone will be greatly enhanced as handset will no longer be a problem. [Past rumours suggested that Apple will not bother to do a CDMA line of iPhone for Verizon but will wait for 4G when both the GSM as well as the CDMA worlds will converge to use LTE. May be the added carrots of Korea and Japan may prove to be too tempting to wait for 4G.]

And there's no way that Apple would allow another app store on their phone. The whole "preserving the user experience" thing. What developer would want to go through Apple's review and approval possess if they could so an end run through another store? The facts are that Verizon would have to surrender to Apple's way of doing thing and they have proved in the past that they don't want to do that.

Korea

I stand to be corrected.

It turns out that even though Korea is practically an exclusive CDMA (instead of GSM) world for basic phone services, 2 of their biggest service providers actually opted for UMTS/WCDMA for 3G. So, as long as their service providers are happy to use the 3G netowrk for both voice and data services, the current iPhone 3G will work there and no new phone will be required.

Doesn't apple want to sell as many phones as possible. Limiting themself to one carrier in the US can't last forever.

hmmmmmm i guess i don't care if they switch to verizon or not cuz i was with at$t before i had my iphone....

if the iphone goes to verizon and it causes competition so at$t lowers their prices or changes their policies... that's cool... but i don't see that happening as they already have the competition with other phones and doesn't help!

really... in the BIG picture.... OVERALL... one is no better than the other....
