New iPhone 6 user coming from a 2013 Moto X. The Moto X had its share of issues, but I also must say the limitations of iOS and the iPhone 6 are startling.
For example, I understand wanting to help people save data usage, but the 100MB limitation when downloading apps from the App Store is frustrating. I was excited to hear about MS Office being made available as free apps, but I couldn't download them until I got home. Why not, like Android, allow users to choose whether they want to download via data or WiFi, with a simple warning that data can potentially incur additional carrier chargers?
Likewise, while Touch ID is a nice feature, the rigidness of it sometimes makes it frustrating. Every now and then, even after setting up Touch ID, the phone will require my Apple ID password because it's restarted or something. I woke up in the morning and wanted to download something from the App Store, placing my thumb in place fully expecting Touch ID to let me pass, but a pop up said in order to allow Touch ID for purchases, you need to input your password first. I was surprised and disappointed. Little things like this make Touch ID feel half-baked. It asks this every once in a while throughout the day (not sure what triggers it). I wish Apple would go all out and just let the user decide how much liberty they should take with security. I'm not saying eliminate important security features, but let the user figure out how much security they want or need. Nobody does finger-print scanner better than Apple at this point in time, so why not let us use it to its fullest extent?
Speaking of Touch ID, unlocking the device fails more often times than I'd like to admit, which then requires me to lift my thumb and try again. It's a nifty feature, no doubt, but not as magical as a lot of people have made it out to be.
Widgets also feel half-baked. It feels a bit cramped in the pull down panel. Also, little things like in the Tomorrow section, it'll tell me I have an event the next day at 9AM, but it won't tell me what it is. Fine. I click it thinking it'll take me to the event, but it doesn't. It just takes me to the Calendar app for today. Wouldn't it make more sense to take me to the event I clicked on for Tomorrow? Or better yet, why not just show me what the event is that I have tomorrow at 9AM? I thought widgets are supposed to give me information quickly and at a glance.
The speaker port... I think it's time for Apple to up their game when it comes to the speakers. I don't own an HTC or Sony device, but Boomspeakers and front-facing dual speakers in general are starting to catch on and Apple is showing no signs of joining the game with their smartphone (presumably an iPhone 6S will bring the same design). It's a shame. The speaker quality is fine on the iPhone, but can very easily get covered up and muffled. When playing games in landscape mode, for example, they often get covered up by my grip, forcing me to adjust how I hold my device when gaming. Even sometimes when I'm typing in portrait mode, my pinky finger will rest just below the speaker port, and I won't hear the clicking type sound effect anymore.
Lack of back button... I like Apple's gestures to go backwards in apps, but it's not fully implemented and sometimes doesn't exist (meaning I'd gesture back only to have nothing to happen). Obviously, I'm not wishing iOS suddenly include a back button like on Android, but I do wish Apple would, once again, go all out with this feature. It should be there in every app, no? Plus it sometimes doesn't feel like it responds. It's simply doesn't seem as reliable as a dedicated back button to me.
Sharing... I wish Apple would allow me to share to more apps than just Twitter, Facebook, Flickr. I'd love to be able to share (aka upload) to DropBox directly from my gallery. Or if I want to share something to Hangouts. Again, it makes one wonder, why? Why can't we share to the apps that are on our phone? We clearly want them there and have plans to use them. Why can't they all play nice?
Inability to queue music... Google Play music has taken leaps and bounds lately, and I was shocked to find the iOS Music app to be so limited in controls. Am I mistaken? I can't seem to queue music the way I want. I find this particularly strange because iTunes allows queuing music so easily and well (I love the "Add to Up Next" feature, for example). It's strange to me iOS Music doesn't allow the same range of controls. Please correct me if I'm wrong?
Another area that feels a bit half baked is the Control Center. For example, it's a bit annoying that I can't launch into a new WiFi network from there. I can turn it on, but in order to input WiFi security passwords or pick which WiFi I want to be on, I have to exit Control Center and go to the Settings app and find the WiFi section there. It feels very roundabout when you would. Again, it feels like Apple isn't going all out. Control Center not giving you any real control.
These are just a few of my gripes using the iPhone for the past two weeks. Coming from an Android, it's quite an adjustment. I enjoy the fast and easy to use camera, and a few other nice features that iOS and the iPhone bring to the table, but I also find myself missing a lot of features from Android. At the same time, I don't think I want the Moto X anymore.
Am I the only one that feels there aren't that many sub-5 inch screen Android devices worth getting?
