A song called "Paranoid Android" (those of us who have read the wonderfully original and very funny book 'The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy' by the late, great Douglas Adams will well know where this title has come from) by Radiohead from their double CD album 'The Best of Radiohead'.

I've spent the last hour outside on the balcony, in the late evening, with the cool, wet weather surrounding me, while listening to a few select tracks, among others

  • Adagio for strings, Op 11
  • Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14
  • Mozart's Violin Concerto No.5 - III Rondeau
I sat outside, clothed in a comfortable and welcoming fleece jacket for warmth about the body, a warm pair of gym pants, cotton socks and nice slippers for the extremities and a faithful feline companion on my lap. The cool breeze blew in from behind me once in awhile sending a slight shiver down my back. The gentle sprinkling of rain showered us ever so slightly as the serene music played melting away the stress of the day and brining me to a most tranquil calm I hadn't experienced in a long time. Ever so slowly, I consumed not only this peaceful music, but a wonderful cup of coffee carefully prepared in a French Press.

Well, it was free, so I'm listening to "Sleep Like a Baby Tonight" off of U2's Songs of Innocence.

I am listening to Ralf und Florian...

I'm having a hard time not seeing Dr. Rick Daglass. :p

Blood Ceremony - so cheesy that it is good :) - a nice retro mix of Black Sabbath/Jethro Tull/Blue Oyster Cult/Deep Purple

Now that sounds like a lovely way in which to pass the time of evening - restful classical music, comfortable clothing, a nice cup of coffee from a French Press, and a faithful feline companion….

It was a nice time. Puma usually walks around or sits on the ledge peering down while he is on the balcony. But last night he hopped up on my lap and stayed there for the first time (while outside). I think it was too chilly for him and he wanted some warmth.

Maybe he liked the classical music, too; it could be that animals react differently to different forms of music……

Anyway, it sounds like a lively way to spend an evening - a Friday night, and sitting in comfort, at ease, in a very nice and relaxed setting, sipping good coffee, and enjoying excellent music and congenial company……what is there not to like?

Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Self-titled (1970)

Picked up a box of LPs at a yard sale this weekend, lot of stuff from the late 60's to early 80's. Some of it I already own.

I bought the box because after a quick glance through it had Zappa's Baby Snakes, ELO's Eldorado and Discovery, Kenny Rogers' The Gambler and John Denver & the Muppets' A Christmas Together. There's about 40 LPs and a dozen or so 45's in the box. Most of the covers are in fair/good condition.

Guy was asking for $20 for the lot, I gave him $50 (Mostly because Baby Snakes is damn near impossible to find for a reasonable price, and most of the reissues are going for $100).

It is always nice to pick up something like that, especially when it is rather unexpected. I hope you enjoy listening to it.

Heligoland by Massive Attack while sitting outside looking towards the Heavens.

I've been in a pensive state of mind the last few days, as I do on occasion. Tonight, as of the hour I write this it is a wonderful and crisp night, with an air temperature of 49℉ and no breeze. It is nearly a perfect condition for being outside and staring at the stars.

Although, living in an urban environment, including the small one that in which I reside, introduces too much light pollution to fully appreciate the majesty of the Milky Way Galaxy. All I see are some scattered bright but blurry stars. But its sufficient enough to stare and ponder while enjoying the low and slow rhythm of a Massive Attack album.

For a moment, not even, but the twinkling of an eye, I glimpsed a shooting star directly above me. Traveling east to west at tens of thousands, or maybe many tens of thousands of miles per hour, the streak came and went. It appeared, to me, from my vantage point, to be large and streaming of blue as it sizzled through the upper atmosphere. Over and above and to the west, behind me as I lost visual contact with it when it left my purview due to the building I live in being in the way.

For a fleeting moment, it was amazing while simultaneously awe inspiring. As I listened to music, I was listening to and watching the stars.

Lovely post, with an atmosphere which is beautifully described.

So, while marvelling at the spectacle of a shooting star, and sitting awestruck at the manifold wonders of the night sky (and I have long thought it incredibly fascinating that we might be seeing light from stars long extinguished), two other questions occur to me: Where was Puma? And, did you have a nice cup of coffee - or espresso - near to hand?

Ah, well, Puma decided to stay inside for some reason and sat by the screen door. He must have been tired; you know, after a long day of cat-napping.

I did enjoy a nice cup of coffee just prior to going outside, and prior to the event of cracking one of mugs as well!

It's not a complete evening on the balcony, under the stars, without having a hot drink of sorts, be it coffee, hot tea or even hot chocolate. (Just don't tell Shrink!)

Ah.

There is nothing wrong with a cup of tea, or warm milk, or hot chocolate at night (as the evenings begin to close in); very soothing, sometimes. Not every occasion can be marked with a little cup of espresso (though some may beg to differ)…….indeed, I may even follow your excellent example...

And, as for my listening, I am back listening to a few of the smooth sixties stuff that I have a soft spot for, (on occasion). Alan Hawkshaw, and John Barry, for example…..
