i still use my Duet 1 along with a focusrite ISA one pre-amp and get studio quality results. Duet has great AD/DA converters and by having a nice pre-amp in your recording chain really pushes it over the top especially when recording vocals. if you have firewire, go for the Duet 1 and you can prolly find one used cheap.

The Roland EDIROL UA-1000:

But I dunno anything about audio interfaces. I got this cuz it was a pretty shade of blue and had lots of sparkly lights. It works really well. <shrug>

:)

If you can understand the Audiophilic spoken language there's this:
The ASIO drivers worked very well with Cubase SX 1.06, running the 'FiveTowers' 2.0 CPU torture test with 6.5ms latency at 44.1kHz, and the lowest 3.3ms setting with the less demanding 'Heaven And Hell' demo, while NI's Pro 53 managed the lowest 10ms Play Ahead setting with the MME drivers.

Apogee Symphony I/O on my Mac Pro (Symphony PCI-e 64 card).

Apogee Duet 2 on my MacBook Pro.

My only complaint about the Symphony is that it does have a fan inside it, and it is slightly audible on my desk when running both of the expansion cards (I only noticed it after the second expansion card was installed, so I'm guessing the fan idles when there's only one card installed). Other then that, it's rock solid.

The Duet 2 is a nice looking piece of equipment, looks and sounds fantastic when it works. It is stupendously tweaky otherwise. Sometimes it won't enumerate, sometimes it will, sometimes it'll enumerate then disappear, and other times the drivers will panic the kernel. A friend had the same issues and got a replacement Duet, so I'm not sure if it's a hardware or software quirk. I should probably send mine in.

I know, I know, nothing much compared to most other stuff posted....
But hey, I'm a singer/songwriter, not an audiotechnician.
And messing about with this tiny interface on my attic, it gets the job done well.
I digitized some old tapes and heard some details I never heard playing the tapes themselves. Although that might also be because my KRK's are way better then any HiFi speakers I ever had :D

So, just for fiddling about, my setup is great.
I'll save the extra bucks for some proper studio time.

Who pays for studio time? Get signed to a label. Then they pay for it. Paying for your own record is crazy. No one will hear it but your friends. Do a demo worth a crap and get free studio time.

18i8?

thinking about the Focusrite 18i8 4 preamp one that just came out...wondering if anyone is using it already? kind of wish there was one that connected directly to lightning connector that is decent and in the $2-300 pricerange

Haven't seen any with a lightning connector.
You may have to bite the bullet & get one that supports the 30-pin connector and add Apple's ridiculously-priced 30 to Lightning adapter.

I have an Apogee Jam as a secondary audio interface, for quick inspiration recordings (without habving to fire up the Mac Pro, Apollo, and KRK's) and I find it silly that they have no intention of producing a lightning cable for it.

Yeah, because a label is a big charity that gives you free studio time if they like you. It doesn't have to be paid back or anything.

On topic: I run an SSL MadiXtreme64 (PCIe) with an Alphalink SX

It's interesting that someone resurrected this thread right about now...

Note there's not a single person here with an internal sound card. Perhaps life can go on without PCIe slots after all. ;)

I had to buy a new interface last year after my Audiofire 8 bit the dust, and I wanted one that would be guaranteed to work with my next computer (ie, not dependant on internal connectivity, not FW) so I got the RME Babyface. Not cheap, but great. Stable, one solid knob, USB bus powered, low latency. It has 2 respectable pres, a DI for instruments, XLR outs for my monitors, and best of all, it's really small so you could easily use it for a laptop-based recording session. I'd recommend it. I know this is an old thread but I just felt like adding that :)

Guess I always had great contracts. And depends if there is a 'house' studio. Producers always did pro-bono for street cred. But I'm special, apparently. Everything was always re-couped after initial release. Rest was gravy. But I don't own a home or anything so very very thin gravy.

generally, labels will charge you for all studio time in addition to production and marketing costs. . . . a least, that's how my 3 contracts with labels were written!
luckily our first release sold decently so we didn't end up owing the label in the end, but that's actually pretty common.
it's much better these days to self-release through services like tunecore if you're only going to sell a few thousand copies.

lol, nice humblebrag! :D any releases out in the wild I can listen to?

anyway, 'recouped after initial release' makes it sound like you paid the label back after they fronted the money, unless i'm misinterpreting . . .
anyway, yeah, the money from my labels was always orders of magnitude less than what we made from touring. shows=$$
and my labels were TINY! my band was pretty niche, for better or worse.

humblebrag. I like that. Stealing for the future. I have tons of stuff in the wild but prefer not to be, you know, either lauded or destroyed. Can't take it. You all can rip apart my tech-ness but my art is something else.

Metric Halo ULN-2 +DSP.

Another extremely happy ULN-2 user. I installed the +DSP license recently and it's absolutely amazing stuff.

The electronics are first class of course. Just the preamps are more than worth the price.

I have one too, and they're amazing! Same preamps as Focusrite's much pricier offerings, and the included plugin suite is good too. I even got the Midnight plugin suite (models of a high-end Focusrite EQ and compressor, the ISA 110 and 310) worth £80 for free with mine :D

I'm a music student, and my uni recently partnered with Focusrite to build an on-campus studio with an 80's Neve desk and a ton of Focusrite outboard gear. When we DI'd guitars and basses, I honestly couldn't hear a difference between my 2i2 and the Focusrite in the control room. Although, their monitors were leagues better than mine...

seriously, I'll be nice, don't worry. ;)

hey guys...got the Focusrite 18i8 here and testing it out...one major drawback is the inability to charge the ipad while using the interface connected to the ipad's 30pin connector...is there any hope in hell of getting charging to happen simultaneously while using the camera connection kit?
