My wife and I both read it over the Thanksgiving holiday, thanks for talking about the book my friend, otherwise I would not have gone an picked up a copy, and if there is someone who recommended it to you thanks to them as well, it was well written and I enjoyed it immensely as did my much better half.

Delighted to see that you both enjoyed it; earlier, @Clix Pix had recommended it to me.

Reading this classic Sci-Fi novel, written in 1963, Hugo Award winner in 1964. I had not read it previously, in fact I haven't read many of Simak's novels but I have another one just purchased that I'll be reading next ("The Werewolf Principle").

Finishing up a run thru the Harry Potter books, half way thru Deathly Hallows...

The very best of them all, to my mind.

I lean towards Half-Blood Prince...

I hope that you are enjoying your run through.

Very much so...! I must have watched the movies about four or five times this year, so I figured I should run thru the books again; I had forgotten that there is SO much more in the books that is not covered in the movies...!

Fascinating.

Why is the Half-Blood Prince your favourite?

Yes, it does have Voldemort's back story, but, to my mind much of the power of Deathly Hallows comes from the backstories of both Dumbledore and Snape.

Just finished 1984 last night. Holy smokes what a utterly depressing book. I am actually glad and liked the way it ended. What a great read!

Looking for the next recommendation. I know "Animal Farm" was mentioned, what other books come to mind?
We by Yevgeny Zamyatin, the prototype for 1984.

I just finished William Gibson’s Cyberpunk Sprawl Trilogy, Neuromancer, Count Zero, and Mona Lisa Overdrive. Yes, it took me forever as usual with my book reading these days. I recommend this series with caveats, it is well written, but not monumental, but it is intriguing, especially when considering when it is written and my understanding it is regarded as by the father of cyberpunk, even though at the end the story fizzles, leaving you wanting more, like a real ending.

I like that one, my favorite of his is Mastadonia, which is an expansion of his earlier short story Project Mastadon. Its one of my 3 favorite Time Travel novels. Also Way Station was optioned by Netflix just before Covid, so we may get a movie of it, once they get back to making movies at a regular pace.

That sounds great. It would make a terrific movie. Thanks! (And I'll check out Mastadonia - just took a quick look at it on Amazon, kind of sounds Jurassic Park-ish.)

One thing I like about the Potter books is how the language changes and grows up as he gets older.
Have you tried any of her Cormoran Strike books, as Robert Galbraith? Much more adult stories which gets better as the series develops.

To me, HBP seems the first Potter book where Harry is not getting kicked about (well, there is that bit on the train to Hogwart's), and the whole Snape's old Potions textbook thing is pretty fun...

And then we get absolutely smashed in the face at the (near) end...

You should check out a few books by Neal Stephenson, Snowcrash & The Diamond Age... !

Aside from the seven Potter books & The Cursed Child play; all I have read by JKR is The Casual Vacancy...

I just started the Mistborn Trilogy and it‘s off to a very promising start.

Ah.

I look forward to reading your thoughts.
Interested to get your thoughts on this when finished. Two unrelated friends put the series (in one case also other books of his) down as both depressing and just far too stretched out.

Actually, I really liked the series, although it did become darker as it progressed.

And, I agree, some of his other work is far too stretched out, something that is the perennial curse of some fantasy writers.

However, I must say that I absolutely loved the first Mistborn book. I thought it brilliant.

By itself, it stands alone, - one narrative arc has been completed - and is a genuinely gripping, well-paced tale, with terrific world-building, some great ideas, an amazing (and entirely original) system of magic, some wonderful characters, evil but elegant aristocrats, an appalling and powerful pseudo-divinity as the (primary) antagonist, and a fantastic female protagonist.

What is there not to like?
I’ll report back.
I await your thoughts with interest.

Just finished The Werewolf Principle, really enjoyed it. I'm wondering why it has taken me so long to discover Clifford Simak, or at least appreciate him (since I've known of him since I was a teenager). But that means that I'm discovering these books for the first time now, which is a great enjoyment.

Next up - thanks to your recommendation - is:
