What Book Are You Reading?

Thanks guys you've given me some direction to check in. Oh and thanks for the heads up on 'His Dark Materials'.

We're going on a 8hr road trip next month so I want treat her to a few new books so every book you guys are posting I'm checking.

How about the Nancy Drew mysteries by Carolyn Keene? I'm 21 and I still read them. You said your daughter loves mysteries, I think these books are very enjoyable :)

Other recommendations:

Half-Moon Investigations by Eoin Colfer

Shakespeare's Secrets and Masterpiece by Elise Broach

Down the Rabbit Hole by Peter Abrahams

The Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley. These books are published for adults but I think children can enjoy them too. The main protagonist is an 11 year old English girl who has a talent for solving murders. The books are set in early 1950s Britain. This is what the author said when someone asked him if the books are suitable for children.

Although written for adults, the Flavia books can be read by anyone who enjoys them. I’ve heard from readers ranging in age from 8 to 95.

Any place but here or there....
Working my way through the Venice Noir anthology. I'm not big on crime/noir, but I couldn't resist reading a second translated story by Italian giallo author Barbara Baraldi. I'm saving her story for last. Turns out there were a few good stories too (and several clunkers proving why I am not fond of the genre.)

I just started Eragon- a boy and his dragon. I am surprised how young the author is/was when he wrote it. Am liking it so much I just ordered two more from Amazon.

Prior to this I just finished The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo trilogy. Hard to believe it has been in the top ten books for the last year, but it is good enough for me to recommend.

Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged is highly recommended. Not only a good story, It makes you think too.

I found a free version on the iBooks store and need something to tide me over until Richard Ayoade's adaptation of The Double is available. Oh, jeez, iTunes has it. Yippie!

I'm interested in Barbara Baraldi-- could you recommend a good story to begin with?

I'll be reading Larry Niven's Ringworld on Thursday when it comes. I haven't read this book in 30 years, looking forward to reading it again.

I'll have to remember that one. I have too many books to read, I'll never get them all read. I hate that. haha.

I've started Suffer the Children by John Saul after a recommendation from a member here. I'm 30% in.

If you don't want to read The Girl with the Crystal Eyes (the one novel translated into English), I would pick up the Venice Noir anthology and try her story there. If you like that, then GWTCE.

Not sure if you've seen any Dario Argento movies, but she writes very rough and sleazy material (much like some of Argento's films along with the 70s Italian police films she references.) I like it actually since I'm a fan of Italian genre films from that period.

Well after finally graduating I'm finding it much, much more pleasant to read novels. So after almost 5 years of not reading I'm getting back into it with "The Picture of Dorian Gray"...I'm on chapter 4 and I love it. I wish I would have read it sooner; I used to be a book whizz lol

I've also got "An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Eart" by Chris Hadfield lined up. This one was inspired from right here on MR :D

Yes, it certainly was you. I'm absorbed in the story. I really want to know what happens. There's something peculiar going on.

Great! I'm glad someone else enjoys him :) I remember loving the first book, and a good many of the ones after that one.

Do you remember if the book ends with a twist? Or something shocking. Do you remember the plot at all? How long was it when you first read it?

LOL. I just look forward to the book even more when I know these sort of things. But that's fine. You don't have to tell if you don't want to :p
