I use a Domke F-2, and it holds all my lenses reasonably well. The 200-500mm is a bit bigger than my 70-200mm, but I can get a lot in the bag, including the zoom lens, two bodies, a flash unit, and three other lenses.

It's a workhorse of a bag, though I haven't had it for a decade, much less since the 70's

It sounds as though the f-stop system of bags might be a good solution for you. They have at least a few different ICUs (Internal Camera Units) that would fit that lens and several bags that can fit those ICUs (in the Mountain Series). You just pick the combination of ICU and backpack that works for you.

[Full disclosure: I am now sponsored by them, but this is a recent development. I've used their products for many years and have supported the brand on my own for a long time.]

I'm thinking about the f-stop bags. I want to start carrying some gear into the weeds so to speak, what's a good choice for a D600, plus a couple of lenses?

You have to do what I do.
Choose what you are going to use, leave the rest at home.
Or take two bags!

I got a Peak Design Everyday Messenger bag off the kickstarter. I really like the flexibility designed in the bag to adjust to your storage needs. Ease of access to the inside is very good, too.

Probably a Loka or a Lotus with a medium ICU (shallow or slope). The Lotus is backordered until April, but you can probably still find the Loka through eBay or other online resellers.

Well that might be fine considering my camera budget is empty because of my latest purchase.

Just got an Amazon Basics Large DSLR gadget bag and really love it. Big enough to fit all my stuff but still smaller than my backpack when I don't want to bring it.
