Some of my need such as 3D rendering will likely never be met by the iPad hardware while 3D modelling would. However, I benchedmarked video export from keynote and surprisingly, the export was quicker on my iPad 1 Pro Gen than on an 8-core mac pro!

My biggest concern is not be able to open two instances of the same app. The workarounds in each app such a PDF expert and notability is different and it would be far easier with as system wide approach. Marking text could be much easier as well: Imaging the two finger curser to move to desired text, drop a third finger and drag to make a selection. The two fingers to cursor could be systemwide as well and not only when the keyboard is up making it easier to select other things such as files, pixels in images or whatever else. What is also irritating is navigating in text without and arrow keys. Make these in the software keyboard.

No need to be offensive or superior over iPad users as it makes the debate climate bad. I am certainly not a kid and I am an academic at at university which indicate quite strongly that I have some academic ambitions. I use an iPad every day for note taking, giving lectures, reading and annotating theses, making keynote presentation, travelling etc because it is more convenient and rapid to use compared to using my mac. An arrogant poster would claim that this is not "real work" as it is mostly consumption of material produced by others.

I am also at academia and I would be interested to hear your “academic” workflows

Yep, and Macs/PCs are "limited" too. They aren't as portable as an iPad, they don't have good cameras, they are susceptible to viruses, they don't have LTE, they don't have Touch ID, most have crappy screens, and they don't run the iOS apps I use on a daily basis.
[doublepost=1550866663][/doublepost]Look back at your specific reasons for each purchase and current day applicability of the device. We bought Mac because of android failures. No more yearly purges, crashes, booting up, or viruses. The MB Pro 17 inch is likely obsolete but it's specs were top of the line and pricey. Its never (knock on wood) crashed. It's used for those online work related requirements, document programs, iPhone backups, ripping, transferring cds, and any "private" stuff like tax data, etc., that is not to be done on the multi-user refurb iMac in the kitchen, which has had some minor issues. The iPads have a screen "time out" which is annoying to productivity to say the least. And split screen tabs time out on work stuff so there are more frequent repetitive logins than on the MB pro. The keyboard is doable but not as fast as the pro. The iPad is for note taking, web surfing, emails, portability, and Kids can use the iPad with no worries.

I can't run a piece of software that allows me to publish easily. When photoshop the full version comes to the iPad, that will eliminate another key feature I can't currently use. Mouse support for editing long documents (think novels) would be ideal too, but I get why it won't come. If I'm only going somewhere for a week I can use an iPad, but if it's longer I need a laptop at this point.

Xcode and Android Studio are the main ones, plus a database/development environment called QM. I've done up to two week trips with just my iPadPro but longer than that the chance of my needing to do actual "work" increases enough the MacBooPro comes along...

Lately I am getting annoyed by the Files app bugs. I am not sure if it's device specific (meaning it depends on RAM memory) or it's only software bug but the application is just unusable. I cannot save files because the app either remains in loading status for minutes or it's unresponsive and I can't choose target place. It happens regularly on my regular 2018 iPad. I still have not encountered it on the company iPhone 8 I just got.

One thing I can say is no matter how powerful the CPU is both the iPhone and the iPad reload apps and Safari tabs like crazy. It's quite annoying and hinders any attempt on my side for productivity. I know that it's the iOS ram management but for my specific usage is counter productive and leads to not a good user experience with said devices. As I see this quite often I feel that both devices are slow and lagging.
