Who knows this might be the year the 27" get integrated graphics! Isn't that exciting! *shudder*

You're right back in the PPC days, Apple was marketing their computers as faster then Intel chips and to a degree that was the case. G3s had an edge on the then current Intel chips, but that advantage quickly evaporated. By the time the G5 came out, it was too little too late. In fact Apple was going to Intel when IBM convinced them that the G5 PPC chip was better. Sadly, in the long run IBM was unable to roll out a 3GHz CPU (as they had promised Apple) and was unable to get a low powered model for laptops. Apple gave up and transitioned to Intel which was a great move and perhaps over due.

I do so love being talked down too.

iMacs will never have a GTX1080. But AMD Polaris yes. iMacs have had nvidia before, I assume its about were apple gets their best deals and fits best with the rest of the hardware. But if they were to switch to nvidia again it would have been to GTX 1080M which comes later this year....but I would assume Apple is getting better deals from AMD, since their cards are cheaper and AMD are more desperate for deals to get a bigger share of the market. But, personally, what annoys me is why apple doesn't let us get new hardware right away and choose to our liking. They could bring all these new GPUs and new CPUs to the BTO options right away. That way iMacs and Mac Pros would stay updated instead of selling old hardware for premium prices. The prices for the Mac Pro was ok when it came out, but AGAIN their prices stay up and the hardware gets old, and now its just funny what they charge their customers...Im enjoying my iMac every day, but I have to say, doing 3d graphics, motion FX and artwork, im struggling not getting tempted by what I could get buying a PC for the money I throw at Apple. A BTO professional Mac should imho always have updated hardware to choose from - they dont even need to announce it like "new" just make sure Macs are on par with other hardware you can buy...Nobody would then complain that apple is forgetting their "pro" customers.

We're most likely looking at AMD again for the next iMac utilising Polaris 10. With the recent die shrink to 14nm FinFET this will result in reduced power requirements and therefore less heat output. It's possible this extra headroom with thermals would allow Apple to consider a more powerful GPU than would normally be the case. Of course Apple could see the reduced thermals as a opportunity to make the iMac slimmer again and we'll end up with another mid-range GPU.
