The point is that your analogy does not accurately reflect the difference between JB and non-JB, hence I posted my response to it.

Well, then we have to dissagree. I think that an example showing a choice between 2 different things is a pretty good analogy for a choice between 2 different things.

But you don't. I'm still not clear why you think that, but I'm not going to argue about it since you seem certain.

Hi everyone,

I have a iPhone 3G and was wondering what cool features or apps can I put onto it? Anyone have any particular recommendations?

I mean stuff like change the icons add a screensaver etc...

Also Jailbreak is not an option :)

So what cool things do YOU have on your iPhone?

Thank you :D

Take a look at the following Apps, I have found all of these useful/fun.

Shazam
Pandora
Free Rss
WeatherBug
Google
Easy WiFi
i.TV
Topple
Simplify Media
YPMobile
And there are several good Bible Apps if you enjoy reading the Bible on your Iphone the best free one I've found is Bible

Don't listen to all the people who say to jailbreak your phone. It is not great at all. If you want to customize youre springboard, you have to use a program called winterboard which is BRUTAL on the RAM. You're phone will become twice as slow as it was without it. There is a video recorder app called cycorder which is great for video but uploading to your computer is a nightmare (which basically renders it useless for typical users). iRealSMS & BiteSMS are both buggy as hell and slow on top of it (kinda ruins the beauty and speed of SMS). Other than that, there are no really useful apps for Jailbroken phones. PDA Net, which is by FAR the most useful app in Cydia installer, used to be free but not anymore.

I jailbroke by phone for 2 weeks and the phone slowed down DRAMATICALLY. Granted, it was significantly slower with winterboard installed, but even without it the phone did not have the same user experience. Anyone who says otherwise, is fooling themselves or is just oblivious to how fast the iPhone is with a fresh 2.2 install.

wow I see you're spreading FUD here too

btw jailbreaking is the only way to go on the iphone and had Apple made less restrictions on what kind of apps are in the store I'm sure we'd see less JB ones. So far I've customized my icons & background, copy & paste, video recorder, voip over 3G etc.

It would be nice if they allowed more customization of the interface. I definitely agree that less people would JB if Apple made some concessions with interface customization. That was the main reason why I use to JB - just to have a different dock or hide un-used apps.

I see that you clearly don't know what you're talking about. Jailbreaking has very few benefits for the majority of people who own an iPhone.

The primary way to customize an iPhone is with Winterboard. Do we agree with that statement? If so, are you going to tell me that a program that uses 48% of the system's RAM at MINIMUM (and yes, this is a fact not my opinion...it could use a LOT more depending on how many settings you have installed with Winterboard) will not slow down the phone? If you truly believe what you're spewing than you're just an uneducated person and there is no longer a reason to argue this point with you.

Copy & paste via jailbreak is useful to an extent but does not work across all applications yet. As I previously stated, video recording is useful for SOME but the majority of people will NOT be able to get the videos off their phone. If you need me to elaborate and prove that point, I would be more than glad to but I'm sure you would agree with that. VoIP is a great feature but completely unnecessary and pretty much pointless for anyone that doesn't go over their minutes on a regular basis (the majority of people).

Jailbreaking is great in concept but there are very few applications that are implemented bug free that are available via Cydia or Installer.app. I tried it out twice b/c I wanted to get more out of my iPhone but found the phone unstable and slow BOTH times and found no truly valuable apps.

Software unlock with JB.

Not for everyone, but enough for those that look for it.

Again, everything goes back to preference. There's no point arguing preference or opinion.

Jailbreaking

There are some props when you jailbreak like the app that allows you to put multiple apps in one folder and of course the themes and etc. But really I jailbroke my iphone 3g for two weeks and the process of it was simple but after I did it, it wasnt what I thought. It made everything run completly slow and when I answered a phone call it would all of a sudden just drop with having all signal bars. I liked it for the first bit learning all the new apps and free programs they had but I would never jailbreak it again. I'm just waiting til Apple puts out a folder app so I can put multiple things all in one folder and know my phone will run faster than before.

Hope that helps you some.

thats strange stewart, i had a jailbroken ipod touch so it was natural to immediately do the same with my iphone 3g and havn't noticed any of your described issues, maybe i'm lucky or maybe its because its a new phone and hasn't slowed down from age

since this topic is so old i should also say the advances in app store & cydia apps and os updates have come along way since some of these replys.
