It can only be a multiple of the original resolution. The only option is 2048x1536 (264 PPI) which equates to ~3.2m pixels which is 4x the pixels it currently has.

If I were to be able to choose any feature of the new MBA this is what I would choose as my number one request. I highly doubt we will see this happen but I sure would be willing to pay a lot of money for an advanced display like this.

I can hope and dream, can't I?

I feel that an IPS display is likely. However, I wouldn't rule out OLED for the MBA, especially if it's an 11.6" display. With Apple's partnership deal with LG, you know handing over $1b advance for displays over the next three years, I believe OLED is even possible. I also think 3D is an extremely remote possibility, but Apple would have to see a way to integrate software into making it a cool Mac feature... doubtful.

I have been saying for a year I believe Apple would introduce a new display technology in the MBA first. With Apple also making the retina display for the iPhone 4, it shows us that Apple can focus on a better experience through the display. We do two things with our Macs all the time... we look at them, and we do input via trackpads and keyboards. The MBA has a great keyboard and will probably have the large glass trackpad soon too, so why not improve the only other feature that we use ALL of the time.

Some people also complain about a high resolution display, but Apple can even set a lower resolution as the default in the settings. People that make this complaint that they couldn't see 1440 x 900 on a 13" display are making a horrific argument... as they can always lower the resolution in less than ten seconds. I think this is another way to improve the MBAs by giving us the CHOICE to have a more desktop workspace within the same 13" display.

Just to let folks know, the Superdrives are available again, so the evidence we have to suggest that there will be MBA updates soon has been reduced to nothingness.

They were never unavailable. This is a rumor that was wrong right from the get-go and took on a life of its own and somehow became accepted as fact ––even though even a cursory search could've quickly disproven it. (Every Canadian retailer I checked had them in stock.)

That said, the recent rumors of updated Airs were not mainly based on pulled Superdrives, so chances of an update soon are neither more, nor less, likely than they were last week.

From here, I can see a couple of MBAs, a bunch of MBPs, two iPads, but the majority uses Acers, Thinkpads and Sonys (at least 4 Vaio X). And guess what: the majority uses subnotebooks (mostly <13in).

Whilst I'm not arguing with your previous point about road warriors loving a smaller MBA, I think the main reason is IT departments will be buying windows computers largely (although feel free to correct me)

I'd love an updated MBA, maybe with an ULV i3? or i5? :D (free dreams right :p) and to keep the 13" screen. If anything I'd like the 11.6" to be for either a big iPad, maybe for at home use or home integration apps etc (a little too specialised perhaps? But I know I'd love one for consuming content at home - to me iPad doesn't integrate well enough with iPhone to be good for roadwarriors) or a MacBook Nano as a netbook alternative.

I think 264 ppi at a viewing distance of 1.5-2 feet would probably qualify as a 'retina' display.
