What day to lineup for AirPods?

Store had about 25-30 and I was 15th in line. Guy in front of me got the last one. Almost everybody was buying 2.
Multiple Apple employees were going to the back room to pick up ones for themselves that were being saved for them.
Really bummed. Guess I'll be waiting for my online order in a couple weeks
Yea the lady in front of me got hers and when it was my turn to go in they made me wait for about 20 min "checking inventory" then came back and told me they were sold out. I'm going to try again tomorrow and get there about 8:30am for a 9am opening. Maybe i'll get lucky
Was at the Cerritos location. There were about 50 or so people in line by the time they open at 9am. Rep that helped me said they definitely won't have enough for everyone in line, and I bet most people are getting 2 pairs. Sounded like they have about 40 or so.
Or... you know, tomorrow?

This was a vacation day. Maybe next week when I'm off a few more days. Apple makes it ridiculously difficult to throw money at them sometimes. Pencil was my last annoyance.
I got there 20 minutes early and at that point it was just a group of about 15 people or so. Apparently Apple reps had come out a bit earlier and taken down the names of some people in the order that they arrived, but they didn't for me and the others arriving closer to store opening. When the store opened they took in the list people and told us that it turned out they only had 8 AirPods. There were more than 8 people on the list alone, so I didn't have a shot. I got to demo them, which was nice even if it was torture. The audio quality is far better than I expected. I may try my luck tomorrow morning at the Sacramento Apple Store...
If I had of bought two you might not have got yours. I was 4th in line.

Stanford about more than a hundred I'd gather as I was about 20th in line. Most people in front of me got 2. I waited 45 minutes before store opening at 9am. After I went inside, the line grew to 75 or 100. The sales associate told me that they did not have stock for that line. My guess is that they had <200.
got there (bellevue square) about 30min before store opens, the mall wasn't open yet, but they were letting people in. was at about 25th-30th-ish place, and limited two per customer. I'd say about 1/3 to 1/4 are only buying one, but after me buying two, there were only 6 left to purchase, and 40+ people in line.

Was at the berlin Apple Store yesterday noon, of course everything was sold out. They said not bc of people in line but actually Because of people who did online orders with store pickup...

Really? The option to pickup in-store wasn't available for Air Pods when I checked (more than a few times!). edit: Now the option is there, but earliest pick-up date is 03.02.2017...
Note for German volks: if you're not desperate enough to need Air Pods RIGHT NOW, Mediamarkt currently showing them as being available in 6-7 working days, so end of next week...

It's really annoying how little they know/want to disclose about this actually. Of course I know Apple has never been transparent about availability of their products, but why make it so hard for your customers to figure out when there's a decent chance to get stuff in stores and when they should simply wait for their online orders to arrive..?
I'm giving it up now - pick up status for Berlin says February 3rd. What a joke.

I returned to the Berlin store this morning (first time since Monday).
Made it just before opening and there was already a queue of around 10 people in front of me. Fortunately not everyone was after AirPods as they only had around 10-15 available, so I managed to grab a pair.
Now cancelling all my fall-back on-line orders.

Or I won't, because I just got a shipping notice on my order that will now arrive three weeks earlier than expected (now: 2 Jan 2017)..
