Not because I want to but, . . .

I use Word. I have used word since it first came out and started to hate word after Word 5. I really think Word is a bloated pig that needs to be slaughtered.
Word out thinks me, and in the process it makes writing a lot harder. I have also created grammatically correct sentances (maybe not this one) and in the spelling checker it has told me I was wrong.
Most of my writing files dating back to the mid 80's are probably in word, which gives me a sense of security.
But I would rather switch than fight to keep my loyalty and royalties flowing into Microsoft.

TextEdit for notes, scribbles etc, Word for proper stuff. I really want to get into Latex but I don't really get it, what I need, what's good etc and I think I'd need the time to get used to it. Everytime I need to do something proper I always leave it to the last minute and end up using Word for it because I don't have the time by that stage to poke around a new program. I've become highly adept with the old Microsoft Equation Editor now, its even a permanent icon on my dock!!

Not to be callous, but there's nothing to prevent a deaf person from writing/typing a paper.

Some deaf students are lucky enough to have english skills good enough that typing up a paper isn't a problem. Others went through a crap education system that was obsessed with trying to force them to speak and ignored teaching basic language skills. (or tried to teach them english by speaking loudly and slowly at them.)

So when they get to university, when the purpose of the essay is not to show high level english skills, but to show their understanding and appreciation of the topic (design, science, geography or whatever) then yes, signed essays are accepted. Sign language is a native language of the country after all. The same marking issues such as coherency, argument construction, referencing, topic overview etc apply.

(And yes english is an important part of many degrees, so they get extra specialist tuition in that topic, and some essays will be english-only.)
 
I use Office 2007 Parallels or Office 2004 Mac

Trying to mac the transition to LyX or LaTeX or whatever it is actually called. Don't have the time to learn it during term time but over the summer I will try and get used to it, so i can ditch Word but don't know if it is possible because of the close integration withe Excel and MathType.

Time that would be well spent. I was beating myself up over not spending said time any earlier...it's not very difficult if you're already used to the likes of css and html and stuff.

Have you tried out devonthink? My problem with these kinds of apps is that none of them are particularly good at everything I like or want...Yojimbo had features DevonThink didn't have but when I try to do x or y in Yojimbo I realize it doesn't work and only DevonThink does it and so on.

What I'd kill for is something that combines the best of DT, Yojimbo, Yep (for pdfs), Voodoopad, journler and a couple of other apps together.
 
I've had a look at DevonThink, but I got a little lost as to what to do with it. All the folder structures and new windows popping up overwhelmed me a little. If I have enough time, I may look into it again though.

Ouch...isn't MS:Office slower than NeoOffice on your MBP?

I'm going to wait for the next iWork and MS:Office to decide if I will move away from open source (hopefully a truly aquafied OOo by then) :)
 
Word 2004 for all my papers and notes for classes (notebook view is nice)

And the best part is I got it for free from my college :D
 
I use AppleWorks 6 for just about all my writing needs. works perfectly well for my needs. surprised no one else mentioned AppleWorks in this thread.
 
Isn't Appleworks dead?

I use Pages. It's very nice, but will take a few moments to explore if you've come from Word as most of the changes etc. are in the inspector, not in toolbars around you.
 
I've been writing up my school papers with TextWrangler in XHTML/CSS for a couple years now because it gives me a lot of control on layout, but this only works if you're a web writer. When I have to have a Word doc I use MS Word or OpenOffice.
