I'd never really thought much about the choice of names for my iPhone. I'm talking the name Apple gives by default ("John's iPhone Xs") or that you modify to ones taste. But after downloading one of those Bluetooth finder apps, I am realizing just how public that name is, assuming Bluetooth is enabled which it likely is for many. I am not a privacy nut by any stretch, but it does have me considering de-personalizing it a bit.

So I'm curious, do you all use something very identifiable? Do you leave the default name, which can be very identifiable (usually includes a first name)? Do you anonymize at all?
I was forced to come up with a system a long time ago once I blew past 20 collective computers and devices. Network names for computers are my last name and a number (such as Youngren14). Drives also have a system (so I know which computer the drive is on) but since iPhones don't have separate network names and names for the internal storage the two are combined as far as names.

YM12_iPH_128G is the name of my iPhone 6s+. That string tells me all I need to know.

(Y)oungren - my last name
(M)obile - Meaning a mobile device, cellphone, laptop, handheld device, etc
12 - the 12th device I gave a number to
(iPH)one - This identifies the type of device
128G - tells me the capacity of the device.

My only problem is I lose track of the device numbers because I've never written it down.

I use two letter initials for a nickname I have, then the device model which will include model and maybe size. For example, ‘AB iPad 10.5’. Not only do I not want to broadcast identifying information via WiFi or Bluetooth but it also helps to keep track of devices when I get a new one.

Either “高町なのは’s” or “白崎つぐみ’s” followed by device type (iPhone iPad) or full device name (iPhone 6s Plus). Not only those names are highly identifiable (I will either see the name or a bunch of squares), but also they are not my real name. I can also plug other similar names if I want.

Call me weeb or whatever, I can take it.

And yes, the iOS will default the name to generic device name after resetting network settings.

I'd just name it: iPhone

After seeing too many “John’s iPhone” in airports while scanning for free WiFi, I went with something non-specific and gives away nothing about the target device: “Traveler” (a nod to the Mac II plus Datashow that a college prof wheeled around on a cart for an intro a Mac course circa 1989).

Whatever the full name and model of the phone is:
iPhone Pro Max

FYI, when you reset network settings, the name will default back to 'iPhone.' Not everyone knows this...

thanks for the reminder! Just did a reset on network settings yesterday.

I usually just put a nickname and the phone model

The iBanana Jr.

My watch is the iBanana Tracy.

The mac laptop is the iBanana.

The desktop is El Pato.

My Windows is Dellbert.

My Linux laptop is Xbert.

We won't even get into the home network name or the various VMs that float about.
