Hopefully there will not be an M2 this year since I just got the M1s :). But, if it does, I will say "nice" - maybe next year or two I will look into the M3 or M4. The M1 is perfect to me, now just wait 2-3 years and upgrade again.

I hope there is an M2 this year so that I can have a large selection of used M1s available for sale at 30-40% off. Face it, if Apple releases a 12 inch MB size laptop with a 13 inch screen, youll be all over that. how about a 3 lb 16 inch MBP?

If you’ve already snapped up an M1, do you see yourself selling it on and upgrading to a 2nd gen device?

Are you purposely buying just the base model now so you feel ‘less’ invested for the above scenario? Or do you think the base will be enough to fend off the lure of M2 power?

Are you planning to keep your current M1 longer, and either expecting the base model to see you through or going 16gb for increased future-proofing?

Or maybe you’re holding back from snapping up a machine now, preferring to wait for 2021?

What might influence your decision to upgrade? Faster CPU, dGPU, 32Gb RAM, 14”/16”?

As for me, I’m pretty sure the base Air would do me just fine and I have the urge to pick one up from a non-Apple store this week. However, I also want to hold on until my 16gb Air arrives mid-Dec in case Parallels actually release a stable Win 10 environment that demands it. The former would make me feel better about upgrading to M2 if appropriate. The latter would make me feel like I have a capable enough tool already.

What do you see yourselves doing?
Sell my m1 mbp for a loss and get a 16”

For me, I'll be good with my M1 for a while, at least since it is my travel laptop. I'm guessing the next chip is awaiting the desktops, and since my current MacBook Air M1 is my best Mac, currently, I'll use that until I can replace my iMac with the new M-something chipset for it.

To avoid being confusing. I mean I'll continue to use my MacBook Air M1, after the M-something iMac comes out. I will use that to replace my current iMac. However, my MacBook Air M1 will continue to be my travel Mac since I use a lightweight Mac to drive my live performance at concerts. MainStage is my professional gig software for which I wanted more power to drive the more processor intensive setups I need in a portable.

Still, before I'm ready for that new desktop, I'll likely end up putting some compositions together which would be too much for my poor current iMac.

Seems more likely they do what they are doing to iPhones.

12, pro, pro Max

Air, Pro, pro Max 16 in same processor more ports.

But they still have the desktops to go as well.

Nope. It will be given to family or delegated to another purpose if I do.

No.

Yes.

No.

More ports.

When M2 launches, I'd be tempted but I'd think what I'd plan to do when M3 or M4 releases. I still got my Apple Watch 3. I got it for workouts and notifications. It still does those things. So didn't upgrade. Same with M1. I'll upgrade when it starts to feel a bit slow. That's the only way I can enjoy the upgrade

For me, I will buy the iMac next. Then probably a new laptop the year after that.

And M2. And M4, M5, M6, M7, M8.

Heck, Apple should just jump from M1 to M9...
Funny. Going along with this, I thought. "Well, if they hypothetically used A to stand for Apple and M for Mac, why not just combine them and call them AM1, 2, ..."

Then I remembered. SEGA called their internal studios that.

I wonder if BMW can sue them if they try to use M3?

In the US, it would be unlikely since there is little overlap between the automotive sector and processor/SoC manufacturing. But the EU has some really weird (by US standards) rules for trademark protection and what constitutes infringement.

I would figure they would love to be a top search in Google , the amount of M3 searches that will show the BMW will probably help sales more then anything they can do themselves.

I would reckon 1000x searches for M3 if not more once that CPU is out or even months before its out.

Then they could buy an ad, placing the BMW M3 page just below the search bar. Capitalize on those searches.

All you need to know is when is Apple rolling out the A15. You will see M2 either at the same time or close to it.

Intel has to be a little worried as Apple has a long track record of putting out new CPUs with significant IPC gains. Every. Single. Year. Tick-Tock is neither Ticking nor Tocking. So they will forever be aiming at a target that's moving while they are trying to execute.

And IPC can scale without turning your laptop into a stove. We might have an M3 MBA that can best AMD in single core by then.

bought the mini m1 to test apple silicone.
will buy a 16" mac bock pro only if there is:
at least 4 thunderbolt 4 ports
pcie 4 ssd
64 gb ram
parallels windows 10 is a product and 32bit apps are running
there is a modern display (without ugly bezels)

did I forget something?

I wish Apple would make their own port hub.

Stop reading Macrumors till the hysteria passes....or at least slows down.
YES! I'll be the first to admit that I am a sucker for hype, both here and elsewhere. Definitely not regretting my switch the M1 MacBook Air--this is by far the best notebook I've ever owned--but I'm sure the M2 will tempt me either with a new design or some random spec. Same with iPad Pro.

I'm just tired of the constant upgrades. I used to be the type of person to upgrade everything all the time, but have recently realized how absolutely wasteful that ends up being. So I will continue using my Series 4 Apple Watch until the second (no pun intended) I feel like it's no longer quickly and efficiently doing the jobs I ask it to do. I may splurge if I especially love design changes. Same with this M1 Mac--I plan on using it as my main workhorse machine for as long as I can. Isn't that the point of getting in at ground level on such a leapfrog product that has proven to deliver on most of its promises? What good will an M2 notebook do me at this point when the M1 chews through everything I ask of it without getting so much as warm to the touch?

Apple stuff lasts a long time. More and more, I've started treating it as such. I still really enjoy getting the new iPhone every year, but other than that, I don't care much anymore. I love how Big Sur and M1 have made the Mac look and feel fun again. That's all I really care about at this point.
