95% of the time. Auto brightness off

You have to set the minimum brightness value so that the auto brightness never drops below the chosen one. Then enter a dark room, with auto brightness activated, choose the minimum and appropriate brightness for that lighting and that's it! The auto brightness will never drop from that set point.

I have my phone set to auto brightness, but it is usually on the lower part of the scale because I don’t like it when the screen is too bright (when I’m using it indoors, anyway).

I normally keep it at 50%. I tried using auto brightness once and at one time I had just checked my iPhone in the early hours of the morning and the brightness went up so bright automatically I had to dim it down. That put me off auto brightness. Plus I think that auto brightness may use more battery power than normal. Unless I am wrong.
A glitch could happen, but usually iPhone auto brightness is very consistent.

Auto brightness, which pretty much always keeps it well below 50% unless I’m outdoors.

As I think has been mentioned previously, you can sort of recalibrate the auto brightness by turning it off and Turing it on again.

I would like to have it the other way around - setting where the brightness never goes above a set point. I mostly use my phone indoors and depending on lighting conditions the brightness sometimes goes way up even if I feel like it's not necessary and I prefer to have a low brightness.
I did set the lowest brightness in the dark room and then adjusting it in a lighted room but I guess iOS sets the minimum value and not the maximum allowed.

Leaving on auto brightness is too bright for early mornings IMO. This is one minor thing I've noticed on my SE vs old Pixel - The Google phone brightness adjustment was better for low light situations.

How are you still able to see with that level of brightness all the time!?

see if the auto brightness is too dark for my liking and I end up manually turning it up a little. Should my iPhone remember that and keep it at that level of brightness?

Just got my 11 pro max earlier this month so I’m cooling it down on brightness I keep it at 50% brightness

though recently it’s been on 100% all day past several days 😎
