I don't think they will have a 7.9" iPad Pro. And it's too early to bring the 10.5" display to the consumer iPad.

The 9.7" display was already deemed small for Pro users which is why they are bringing in 10.5". Apple could have a done a 9.7" thin bezel if that's what pro users wanted. A 7.9" tablet leaves no room for a Smart Keyboard or real productivity.

9.7" is too small and yet people have been writing in books and notepads smaller than that for years? I would personally love to see a Pro iPad Mini and hope it may launch this month but I have to agree that there doesn't seem to be much love in these forums towards the iPad Mini size or within the rumours.

Nice chart OP. I am not sure a Mini sized iPad would be in both lines but I like the idea of Pros and Consumer lines being separated again.

What size display did you have in mind for the big screen SE?
Currently:
4" - iPhone SE
4.7" - iPhone 7
5.5" - iPhone 7 Plus
5.8" - (My assumption of a borderless iPhone Pro)

Would a larger SE take away the relevance of the 4.7"?

In answer to your question, probably. I truly like the idea of the SE and was considering one until I saw how small it is. For me, a 5.5 screen is probably as big as I'd go on a phone.

4-inch phones were considered large in 2012 but in 2017, they're considered small.

If iPad Pro is really meant to replace a multitasking computer, a netbook sized display of 9.7" won't cut it especially when Surface is larger.

I think I was caught up with the idea that an iPad Mini Pro would enable users to use the Apple Pencil, which currently, only works with the Pro line of iPads and consequently I hadn't thought about the multitasking side of things.

I feel we have detrimentally conditioned ourselves to believe that multitasking, as a user, is more efficient than single tasking but I could certainly see the benefits of running two apps side by side e.g. iOS notes and iBooks, and agree, that 7.9" may be considered too small to work on for long periods of time.

I dont think apple would change 4.7 size iphone line since it is the best seller. I would say apple would copy its own ipad 2017 strategy to release bigger screen SE with thick body and cheaper screen.

Maybe the introduction of the iPhone Pro would innately lead to the iPhone 7s/Plus being seen as the new SE models?

I think that SE at the low end will hang around for some years to come.

My guess for a lineup this fall is iPhone SE, iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus, iPhone Pro (or whatever the name will be). I think by the year after they'll drop the Plus iPhone (similar to potentially dropping the 9.7" Pro when the 10.5" is around). iPhone SE, iPhone and iPhone Pro? Maybe I'm totally wrong, lol.

I like that line of thinking mate.

Maybe we are in a transition period towards 'borderless' devices? That's why I kind of like the idea of Small, Regular and Large. The actual dimensions may change over time but the overall philosophy remains the same in order to cater towards different use cases.

Yes 7s/plus will be even more expensive but just a medium price range iphone, so crazy.

I like your take on the iPad sizes, but the 10.5" will be a Pro (in the position of the 9.7" in the lineup), and there will be no 7.9" iPad Pro.
Also, the flagship iPhone won't be called 'iPhone Pro'.
The idea of renaming the Mac mini makes sense but I think it could be a bit confusing from a marketing point of view.
While I don't know if the higher end iMac models will be named 'iMac Pro', I would think not although it's possible, especially if there is a significant difference in components.

You sound quite confident about the iPad and iPhones?

Is there any evidence to suggest that production has already started?

I really think they're coming at a fall event. But I'd happily stand corrected if its sooner. I definitely think it won't be this month. The only other possibility I see (not that I think there's a great chance of it), is iPad Pro announcements at WWDC along with significant iPad features in iOS 11.
There was several reports from official news outlets stating that 10.5 inch production had officially started and how we may see a limited release soon in the US only and then other countries as production ramps up.

This is looking more likely than I thought it would with Federighi saying they'll release an updated iMac which includes pro configurations - an 'iMac Pro', if you will.

The only part I'd still doubt is the iPad line - I think the 10.5" will replace the 9.7", and there won't be a pro 7.9" device. That leaves two sizes for both consumer and prosumer (7.9" and 9.7"; 10.5" and 12.9" respectively), which I think makes sense.
Ah, prophetic ;)

Righto, after WWDC, we now have the iMac Pro and 10.5" iPad Pro to look forward to launching!!!

Still sketchy on the iPhone configurations but I'm a tad disappointed that there was no iPad mini Pro. I understand there are many who prefer the larger is better mentality however I just find the mini to be the sweet spot for my personal use cases and the iPhone Plus is just too small to fill that void. Who knows, maybe we will be surprised with an iPad mini Pro later this year in Sep/Oct with the iPhone launch leaving us with the iPad mini 4 as the consumer and a much more expensive alternative....

Reviving the thread for a 2019/2020 refresh. While sizes have changed a bit, the general idea of two target markets (Professional and Consumer) seem to be certainly clear with the 'Pro' moniker, regardless of opinion as to what 'Pro' entails.

Red = Rumoured
Orange = To be released

Actually Apple has always for awhile now, had 2 SKU product lines like Steve Jobs wanted just like Automobile companies
They use 80% of the same Parts but Can charge ALOT More. Like Toyota and Lexus, a Lexus IS 80%-90% a Toyota Camry but with nicer insides and Lexus aka Toyota charges a lot more.

Now with Apple you have a new line you had Pro now comes PRO MAX the first time Ever they have elevated any Product Above PRO.

So IMO the new 16” MacBook Pro will be called the 16” MacBook Pro MAX

I doubt the 16’ mbp will be called a MAX. It will just be called the 16’ MacBook Pro, which eventually will replace the 15’

Apple used the Max name to replace the plus to represent a new era in iphone design. (Said so in the keynote) the plus/max name has been around for years. Its an iphone only thing.
