Alternate universe?

not necessarily. And obviously not in name.

But once Jobs returned, Mac OS didn't stick around long, it was replaced by OS X.

Looking closer at OS X, and all the API's, commands, the netinfo directory service. No other Unix, or Unix clone used those, those are all NeXT items.

Also, think back to Apple Computers, inc at that time and compare it to today. Its easy for us now, to think of Apple as an electronics company with a wide variety of services in 2015, with iPads, iPods, iPhones, music services, etc. Computers are just one, of many things that Apple does now, and Computers aren't the big thing. I believe, that currently, the iPhone is.

Jump back to when Jobs, and NeXT were pulled back into that fold. All that stuff that wasn't there, and what stuff there was, (Newton, game system) were either failures or considered by Jobs to be failures.

That my opinion, and we all know what those are worth, but, from my perspective, Jobs and NeXT came in, took over, and saved Apple. All the other goodies were years down the road.

If I were him, this would be the best thing. The best iMac design and the best all-in-one design ever created. Such a shame they don't sell Macs like this anymore. Now they just try and make them thinner.

I've got one of those, looking at it right now.

It's really beautiful from an experimental aspect, but at the same time the latest iMacs really do seem like the right way to go. They're so much more obvious and precise, and while it's hard to say goodbye to the artsiness of the G4, I'm glad they evolved it to its bare essentials as the tech got better.

I actually loved this design as well, so I decided it to bring it into 2015. Modified it into a Core i5 Mac using a mini.

...now you just need to swap out the CD slot for a docking port for the new MacBook (like they used to have for the PowerBook Duo)...

It wouldn't surprise me if the Cube was his favorite.

We know from his time at NeXT that he loved Cube-shaped computers. The Apple Cube was not only a perfect 8" Cube suspended in acrylic, but was also completely fanless(at least in stock form, although all of mine have had fans added). He was known to have a strong dislike for fans.

That's just my guess, for what it's worth.

I remember him enthusing over that speaker, the Hi-Fi. Don't he say it was soooo good that he'd got rid of all of his real hi-fi stuff?

Anyway, spectacular failure!
