I guess we'll find out next February/March. Sit tight.

The iPad was introduced in January, but only to sell it in April/May.
Exactly like the iPhone, that was introduced in January, but was on sale by June. Today the iPhone year-cycle is June/July.

So, I guess the iPad year-cycle will be April/May.

wouldn't it be january?

Too soon after Christmas. The best thing is for an update in the fall, which would PISS me off and many other people, so they can sell through the Christmas season. If not, sell the current model through the Christmas season and wait til next summer.

How Apple handles the iPad refresh is going to be a delicate situation:

1) refresh this fall for the Christmas is too soon for early adopters
2) refresh right after Christmas makes all those Xmas gifts obsolete

Best time for refresh would be early summer or late spring.

I wouldn't be surprised to see an iPad refresh before the end of this year.

The fact they're delaying the iOS4 iPad update until fall should've clued us in a little, IMO.

Or maybe not...

I'm gonna guess all the things they purposely left out to make the product outdated by the time they released a new one, within a year...
1.25 - 1.5 ghz processor, WHOA, my phone is clocked at 1.2 currently.
512mb of ram? The iPhone 4 already has that.
retina display technology...that makes me laugh, apple releases an old concept (good screen) renames it and it's a new technology.
SD card reader / USB, what a concept.
front facing camera, purposely left out to increase hype on iPhone 4, iChat, so you can chat with only other apple fanboys/girls while you get your rocks off over the next apple product.
how about a removable battery?
1 pound? that's what'll be in it? is it too heavy for ya right now?

You should post more often. Incredibly helpful...Real insight here.

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Very likely. Not sure about 1080p. Jobs seems to be stuck in the lower res. I would love to see a 16:9 ratio. Why? So when we watch movies and make it full screen we don't get the top and bottom cut off.
4. SD card reader is a must. The cable thing is high priced as it is. Having it bulit in will make things much easier.
5. Of coarse. But where though?
6. Yes
7. Seems lug enough as it is.

1. good for you. No one cares about your phone.
2. And it makes sense for the ipad to have it too.
3. Is it old? Retna display seems to be new.
4. Well we want to upload our pictures NOW not later.
5. You may be right. But iPad 2 will have a camera. And yes we know iChat is for chatting
6. Removeablle battery is the only decent thing you said. But I doubt Steve will allow that
7. No comment.

i like your answers they do seem very logical.:) now that i think about 1.5 pounds is ok its still pretty light.

Other than more RAM and capacity bump, I don't think there will be other significant upgrades. Apple really wants to keep the $499 price point, so I doubt we will see a retina display at the size of an iPad that soon. It would be very expensive. Front facing camera, maybe, but then Apple have always advertised that you can use an iPad on any orientation. Having a front facing camera would negate that advertised point.

What I want to see is better wifi/better antenna. Just with many people, I am also experiencing random disconnects, slow throughput, and low wifi signal on my iPad, while my other wifi devices have no issues.

I also want to see Apple shave some of the weight. The iPad is quite heavy. Maybe by next year they have an even more optimized A4 so they don't need such large battery. Stereo speaker would be great too.

My guess is next year, it will be just a minor refresh, with more capacity for the same price point (32GB for $499, and the highest will be 128GB). I mean think about it, design and pre-production for the next iPad probably has started already, and seeing that they are still struggling in terms of mass manufacturing, the hardware of the next iPad will most likely the same.

How so? The lens will be in one place.

I agree. They should be revising the silicon at least once a year so I would expect an A5 (or whatever naming scheme they use for subsequent revisions of the A4). Since the RAM is co-packaged with the CPU then I would expect a bump to 512MB of integrated RAM.

I also agree that they could do with shaving a bit off the weight so I'm hoping that the A5 and other electronics tweaks will yield enough power savings to shave a bit off the battery capacity while maintaining or even slightly increasing battery life. The A4 is built on a 45nm process I think so by next year the A5 should definitely be on a 32nm process and probably some significant architecture tweaks to the core (e.g. out of order execution) to increase the instructions per clock.

Retina display? Too expensive to hit the existing price points next year so I think not, and also would the CPU and GPU be powerful enough to drive it? Probably not.

If they change the resolution it will have to be a multiple of the iPad's current resolution. Otherwise there will have to be a new kind of 'Universal' app that supports the new iPad, old iPad, and iPhone, which would be an extreme pain to developers who have to design interfaces specific to each device.

Probably No Camera :(

I doubt there will be a camera on iPad 2 or the 4th gen iPod touch because FaceTime only works between the iPhones mobile phone numbers without the need to create an account (eg. AIM, iChat, Skype). I wish they had done FaceTime with iChat but they did what they did. Maybe it will change. Hope so. Looking forward to the new iPod touch in the fall!
